He Was MLB's Next Superstar, Then He Disappeared From Baseball...

Scott Kingery was hailed as the next superstar in baseball when he signed his lucrative 6 year 24 million dollar deal in 2018 prior to ever playing in an MLB game. But coupled with injuries, and poor performances, his last MLB at bat was over 1,000 days ago. Prompting many fans and scouts to speculate what could have been if he had lived up to the hype and become one of the greats of this generation like he was destined to be.

I say this as one of the biggest Kingery supporters you’ll ever meet: At some point in the summer of 2019, the league realized he couldn’t hit a high fastball. Maybe that was skill based, maybe that was because the organization changed his swing to have more launch, I don’t know. But he struggled mightily after that for years. As the creator said, he changed his swing in the 2022-23 offseason to be more flat like it was years prior, and he raked in 2023 spring training and probably deserved to make the Phillies out of camp but didn’t. There were also two different times in the summer of 2023 different Phillies battled slumps and injuries while Kingery was hot in AAA where he probably deserved a look again but never got one. I have no clue if he is ever going to have success at the MLB level again, the percentages would tell you no, but he has deserved another chance and it’s obvious the Phillies have given up on him. Hopefully they change their mind. If not, I hope another MLB team gives him a chance

I've followed his career since he was a freshman at Arizona. While he hasn't proved yet that he can hit to the standard of a mlb regular, I don't see why he isn't valued more within the game as a utility player. He can give you gold glove caliber defense at four positions and competent defense at two more, steal a base -- something like 29 of 30 in Triple A last year -- and hit some HR's. But the Phillies signed Whit Merrifield to do exactly what Kingery does, so it would be great if he could catch on with another organization. He was arguably the best player in the minors in 2017 when you consider his gold glove defense at second, and one of the two best players in Florida in spring training 2018 (along with Acuna), so if he can just find a comfort zone with some team maybe he can produce like that again.

Spring Training and the Minors mean nothing if you can't get it done in the Majors. I've always liked Kingery but there's a reason he got passed up and Matt Klentak will always be a fucking idiot for signing him to that contract. Doesn't help at all that Gabe didn't let him get comfortable in a position as a young guy and covid definitely has effected him long term. Middleton went out and signed Trea Turner and Bryson Stott turned into Bryson Stott.

Gold glove caliber defense where? Because his defensive metrics in the infield are nothing more than average, and he has shown to be a better outfielder than infielder so far. Also he only stole 24 bases last year, and even though he hit a handful of homers last year, his .156 ISO is still around 15 points lower than the major league average. At least Merrifield's wRC+ in only 7% lower than the average major league hitter, while Kingery is doing 19% less while in Triple A.

I think if he's able to stay healthy and maintain the same drive to improve his game he still has the talent to perform well enough to earn him another shot in the majors. When you think about how many kids get drafted each year compared to the number of roster spots available at the top level it's easy to imagine the pressure being the major hurdle that so many guys are never able to overcome regardless of how gifted they may be physically.

There’s something more to it tho when you go from next superstar to no at-bats in over a 1,000 days. You can disappoint projections and still just be a serviceable player even if you don’t meet the superstar expectations. But something much more to it to go from Superstar, to an average player to actually not even taking an at-bay in over 3 years. Something more to it than what’s on the surface.

Man as a Phillies fan, I def thought Scotty Kings was gonna be a corner stone for years to come after 2019. Unfortunately, that was as good as it got and even though he’s having a decent ST so far, it would take a miracle for him to make the opening day roster with the entire infield set and utility players like Whit and Sosa already on the roster.

You missed 1 MAJOR aspect to this story, and it’s that the Phillies don’t have a place in the field for him, so they forced this young kid to be a “jack of all trades” player. This 100% screwed him up as it never let him get settled in. He’s a natural middle infielder, but was forced to bounce between 2nd, 3rd, Shortstop, and Center Field. Add to this, the Gabe Kaepler years were HORRENDOUS for the team, and then the Phillies went on a spending spree bringing in big name guys in Jean Segura and Didi Gregorius, he was never really given a fair chance. Looking at the 2024 Phillies, I don’t see a roster spot for him either (as the Phillies have decided to keep both Castellanos and Schwarber, of which, I believe one has to go). The infield is set with Bohm (3B), Turner (SS), Stott (2B), and Harper (1B). The outfield is interesting, as I would imagine it will be Schwarber (RF), Rojas (CF) - though this is still a battle between him and Pache from what I hear, and Marsh (LF). Castellanos would be DH. So, unless someone goes down, I don’t foresee a spot opening up for Kingery anywhere, unfortunately. Though, to be fair, I do think a change of scenery might do him some good at this point.

He has never hit the ball perticulaty great, and wasn't even average in the exit velocity category till in the majors in 2019. Might he be solid to good someday? Maybe, but I doubt he'll ever be elite. Even a guy like Andrelton Simmons was never truly elite, and both he and Kingery have similar offensive production, but Simmons was truly elite only in defense, but was never the greatest offensive producer, and Kingery doesn't hold a match to the defensive greatness that Simmons provided.

He has done well so far, even homered off the Jays in his first at bat. But he's done very well in spring training before. For his career he has an .880 OPS in about 100 games. Yes the Phillies did decline his option! But they brought him in as a non-roster invitee, so we'll have to see what happens in Philly. As you said he would not take the second base spot away from Stott, but he has great defensive coverage so maybe he could find a gig on the team elsewhere, if not another team should surely give him a shot.

I honestly hope he is our bat off the bench this year and is able to help us make a run in October. Like the video said organization did him wrong with all the mind games about where he would play, changing his swing when the launch angle BS took over the league, and then never giving him proper time to heal from injuries. On top of that he had two dip shit managers in Kapler and Girardi who hated young guys and would jerk him around game in and game out over the smallest things like going hitless in 1 game or committing and error in another. If he did that he would get benched for 2 games and then get sent out to a different position 5 games in a row and the pressure started to get to him. They did the same shit with Alec Bohm, luckily Bohm only had to deal with Girardi and he got fired before he could really screw Bohm up too much.

His defensive ability/versatility has a lot of value but he’s so bad offensively (outside of a couple months in 2019) that it almost cancels it out. If he could be just an ok hitter, he’d be a good guy to have on your roster. I do think people’s expectations for him were way too high though. As a Phillies fan I thought he could be good but never really saw superstar potential.

Kingery’s 2017 power numbers were most certainly inflated playing with AA Reading, whose home stadium is a home run paradise. I also believe Kingery’s 2019 power numbers inflated as well due to that being the year of the juiced baseballs. Nonetheless, I always liked him. Wish it panned out, but clearly didn’t. The Phillies did all they could not to promote him last season. Going as far as to hire Drew Ellis literally off the streets to take a bench spot over Kingery. The organization appears to be completely done with him, only keeping him around with the hopes a good spring will entice trade candidates to take a flier on him. Would be nice if he somehow found his way back on the 40-man roster and found a way to contribute, but that’s a dream at this point.

While I agree the Phillies messed up by changing his swing and not sticking him in one position, Kingery is just flat out not that talented. He definitely has value as a super utility defender who can play multiple positions well, but he can't hit for squat. He always reminds me of Cody Asche, who I thought would be a solid MLB 3B, but was never able to learn to hit big league pitching.

As a Phillies fan, I never had hope in Scott Kingery. He came around when Phillies were trying to find themselves after Ruben Amaro Jr. Took over as owner and knew when people we hyping him as the savior of the Phillies that he wouldn't be much of anything and the more I watched the more I got pissed off at his approach as he seemed to me to be a free swinger which is why he has the high strike-out rate
