About:
Jason and Lorraine. In 2016 we sold most of our belongings and left the city in southern California to start a small homestead in the mountains of North Carolina. We left the city in search for a more minimal and intentional life. We became passionate about growing our own food and knowing what exactly is in our food after I (Jason) became diagnosed with cancer. Now 8 years in remission we as a family are on a journey to live our passions.
We document our life on RU-vid videos to inspire others to get out of their comfort zone and not be afraid of change. We started our own online general store where we have available the things we make and use in real life. Thank you for following us on this incredible life changing journey!

Your timing could not be better. Today I took an okra plant in a vase for a centerpiece at our Company Picnic. It had a perfect bloom, a baby okra and 4 tiny buds. The greenery was beautiful also. Everyone loved the flower and asked what it was. They were quite surprised it was okra and taken aback in how gorgeous the bloom was. Now, everyone said they are planting some next year. This made me smile.

What an interesting guy! Thanks for going out to his place and sharing this Jason! I have a funny story about okra. My parents LOVED okra and one year they went to a buffet for New Years. My mom was legally blind, but had a tiny bit of vision left at this time. So back to the buffet, my mom thought she saw Okra and asked my dad to pile it on her plate and he happily did and helped himself to a hearty portion too. They sat down to eat and my mom’s first bite was a big fork full of okra. To her surprise it wasn’t okra it was Jalapeños 😳😂 my poor mom hated spicy things and had the biggest shock of her life! She really wasn’t used to anything spicy and actually got blisters from it. She had such a great sense of humor and told that story so many times, mostly to scold my dad because he could see like an eagle but didn’t notice it wasn’t okra. Haha. They’re both passed now, but I can’t even hear the word okra without thinking of this story. My mom and dad were really a hoot. The best people you could meet. 😊

I am from Ohio and okra is not a popular food here. I grew it this year for the first time. Didn't even know what to do with it. I bought some pickled okra at the store and that was my first time having it. I liked it but it is still so foreign to me. 😂😂

I found your channel through all of those that went to the Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Expo. I've been binge watching! I was born and raised in the South. I hate that he (the guy you feature here) ate his first fried okra in a greasy spoon somewhere. I ADORE, LOVE, FANCY, and DREAM OF FRIED OKRA. The only other way I like to eat it is right off the TREE they sometimes grow into. I mean...it tastes so good raw! I hate it pickled and smothered or soaked in vinegar. Anyway, thanks for this video about OKRA! Yay Okra!! I love your channel and what you've done and you're continuing to do. All of you Western NC'rs (even transplants) make me wish I lived there. Sending love for your journey from SW Tennessee. Which is a world away from you. I'm so glad you make videos and I think your family is brave for what you did.

Roselle is an okra relative that makes wonderful tea. That, and lemon grass, are the Zing in Red Zinger tea, with the roselle providing the Red, alone. It is also called Jamaica in Mexico, pronounced "Ham-MY-ka".

We were in the garden yesterday cutting okra. We planted the Cowhorn variety. The pods can grow 4 or 5 inches overnight. I told my husband we should call it a okra weed..Anything that can grow that fast. LOL

I’ve always avoided okra with a passion, and I always will, besides Lima beans and Brussels sprouts that I’ll never grow, if I see a huge market that could significantly improve my life I would grow them for market but I just don’t see it- so I’ll happily avoid them.

I don't know if you eat grains but I found that when I cut all the wheat corn and oats out of my diet to stop type 2 diabetes that my knees stopped hurting and brain fog lifted while my diabetes reversed. I believe modern grains which are added to so many foods are inflammatory for many people. It might be different if they were original natural varieties, not genetically altered and grown with herbicide. We need food purity laws, badly.
@WayneWatson1
@WayneWatson1 5 лет назад
@@larrym6019 Yea, I need to cut all that stuff out with my diabetes too but, it stays around 130 most of the time. Still, could be better. Yea, modern grains are so full of GMOs. That's the problem and Yea, would be nice if they cleaned up our food but... That's why more and more people are going the DIY route
