Hi, in this video I remove the cylinder head on the astra Z20LEH block to see why the head gasket has failed and take a look at some of the common issues with this engine. Enjoy.
i know this video was posted from 2 years ago but i thought i might give it a shot for a question. I got a z20LET and mine has a blown head gasket too. Now i have a other Problem that my engine is leaking Coolant on the floor when i turn it off and leave it over night. The next day theres coolant everywhere on the floor. Where could that come From? under the car theres nothing to see... i did a leak test and the whole system was sealing properly. my friend got the same Problem but i cant see where it is leaking.
Have you got a coolant system pressure tester? What normally happens is when you drive the car around with a slightly blowing headgasket, it pressuris the coolant system and coolant blows out the back of the expansion tank. After a hot shutdown and parking up it will continue to drip for sometime.
first thank you for your answer, i did test the system when the car is off and everything is sealing but after a longer ride i have on the passenger side under the car a big coolant leak and i cant say where its coming from. i heard something that theres is a hose that gose behing the oilcooler or something. could possibly that leak?
@@damjanmilosevic4161 Have you replaced the headgasket yet? Like I say the cooling system over pressurizes from combustion gasses entering the water jackets forcing coolant to escape form the expansion tank after hot shut down.
@@boosthit811 if theres a degree of consistency in that gap...its likely to be a factory preset...put the cleaned block in an iven and check it at a bit above operating temp...may well settle out zero hot...same for heads...gaskets age like everything...not detonation suggests this would be the problem...im new to these engines & just got on a CorsaB bent to fit one of these...all my car life on bmc minis...i dont like torque to yeild...theyre for an industry full if idiots to avoid the need for re-torquing heads of new cars under warrantee like the old days...i really think they are part if the epidemic if head gasket problems these days...turbo engines should be O-ringed eos...sooo much heat to contain...metal expands thats basic physics
@@Errol.C-nz thanks for the comment! In my experience/opinion with a performance based turbo engine I would like to start with a block completely decked flat at room temp. That engine was over heated (owner said). 4 thou is a bit too much.
Hi boost hit Had a bit of a nightmare recently with my z20leh Melted two pistons and destroyed two bores in the process Looking for replacement options Just wondering if you have anything available Looking for either a replacement bottom end or just a decent block Just wondering if you got anything available in your spares
gASKET RUSTED BAD. tHE OWNER PROBABLY USED ONLY WATER INSTEAD OF COOLANT AND THIS RUSTED THE GASKET BADLY. JEEZ SOMETIMES IN SUMMER I PUT ONLY WATER IN MINE. MAKES YOU THINK DOESNT IT. OBVIOUSLY WITH THAT CRAP SILICON GASKET THING GOING AROUND EDGE THE OWNER TRIED TO BODGE IT UP.
Mechanic by trade, moved into more engine building performance based stuff. That's my passion. Manuals are very handy but haven't found one specific for the vxr.
@@jasonjuggler3457 thanks. Yeah I know, quite busy with my day job. The last engine build i did i used ARP studs and fasteners throughout and arp supplies all torque settings and thread lube. Normal basic engine build stuff you can find settings online or use a Haynes manuals etc.
@@boosthit811 ive got a zafira o know same engine and i. Looking to get another car so I could drop the vehicle to u and leave it till jobs done wot about warranty and how long would it take and where about are u im in Essex
Not sure is it something wrong on your island there and cooling liquids for engines, but I did bought one used engine from there (UK) and also on every Z20XXX video on RU-vid I see all blocks are corroded quite bad. In my old Z20LET that did quite a lot, block inside looks like brand new unlike one I got from UK that I had to do some really heavy cleaning of corrosion inside cooling jackets. WTF if going on there in "good save the queen" country is kind of mystery to me. It is true that clean water is best heat conducting medium, but also it will help to corrode almost anything. Is it that people just do not care so much or something else, hard for me to say. I have also noticed Antifrize is mixed in some videos with distilled water or deionized water. WTF I do not get it. Distilled water is quite much clean water unsaturated with anything and it will want to bind with what ever it can bind. That can just promote corrosion much better than normal as I understand. To conclude, so much heavily rusted water jackets in UK videos is quite strange to me. BTW keep up the good work. Bring on more videos, like it.
Hey man, thanks for the comment. Just found this in the "spam" folder. Anyway im not too sure what the story is with the corrosion exactly. Possibly engines left sitting (broken) for long periods minus coolant and or because they are quite cheep ish cars and get used & abused maybe a bit neglected also?
It's the dex cool coolant they advise to use. It turns orange very quick . Iv flushed mine 3 times with new coolant in 6 months trying to get it clean but the water jackets must be bad as after 3 days it starts changing colour again and iv had to change the reservoir to a new one due to orange rust staining
Hi there very good interesting video. Its unusual that the block is warped, normally its just the head, but maybe very severe overheating took place (lack of coolant & also due to not having a clear temp gauge on the instrument panel & not many people know about the hidden one in the menu !!). Your right about the torx bolt on the tensioner, mine rounded on me in situ but replaced it with a normal hex bolt.
Mr #BoostHit! What brand of hydro capital do you recommend? if it clicks should I make a new one or is it worth disassembling and cleaning? (Z20LER) . Thanks for the reply! Respectfully, Richard.
@@boosthit811 Yes, hydraulic lifters :). I used "Google translate". One is already clicking. I gather some information before I start. What brand do you recommend?
@@rigofutty5172 ok. You can pull them apart and clean them. They are held together with a snap ring. Use vice grips and some wood to pull the centre piece out. Clean up with ultrasonic cleaner or white sprits and a small brush....... Mine were very bad. Since cleaning 2/3 years ago are perfect now.
I have c20xed engineand cylinder head resurfaced changed valve seals and on cylinder nr1 i have oil leak somewher from head to combustion chamber and intake manfold. What could cuse that
@@srbskipas5667 most likely something simple likely a ripped or damaged valve stem seal or guide. Or un diagnosed crack......that's assuming the oil is coming down from head and not up from damage to piston
