Update 6-29-2020. Car is still running good. Miles are in the low to mid 170,000's don't know exactly and the car is not here right now so I'll try to get the exact miles later. We haven't done any doordash in over a month and I bought my son a 2012 Prius Plug in so now the blue one is my daughters car. It gets driven less as they don't share it anymore. She basically uses it to go work @ the Zoo which is about 20 - 25 miles away about 4 times a week. She only has a permit so we let her drive back and forth but we have to go twice a day as she can't drive by herself so basically it's two trips back and forth about 4 times a week.
Thanks a very informative update, I appreciate it. I have a 2012 Prius V and I have the exact same issue 224k on it. Noticed it started at 220k and progressively has gotten worse. I don't even drive it currently. I am waiting on some quotes to replace the head gasket as I do not have the time to do it myself. Came across your video and thought I would give this a shot. Worst case is a new engine, which is about the same cost as a head job at the dealership so I am weighing that in there also.
@Sha Huss Car is still running good but we haven't driven it much lately. Long story, I bought my daughter a 2006 Camry Solara Convertible so she no longer drives the Prius, I just semi-retired on August 31st 2020 and took all my rental cars home and only rent on Turo now. The Dealership licence I will keep but I am currently looking for a warehouse to store a few cars and just tinker around part time. The Blue Prius will soon be on my rental fleet but since it has over 130 miles Turo won't take it so I will be listing it on HireCar soon but I'm waiting to install a GPS tracking device before I let it go out on rental. HireCar is a peer to peer rental app for people that drive for Uber, Lyft, Doordash, etc. so soon people will be driving the crap out of my Prius, I trust it enough to list it there so let's see how that goes.... I'll keep you all posted.
thanks for the update I though I had a blown head gasket on the 2016 Prius ended up being the Heat exchanger so I just bypassed the exhaust heat exchanger thank god no more smoke I was losing coolant not anymore. I was going to look at a product called K-seal I hear good things about this product like you said not the correct way to fix the car but with Covid-19 or without who has an extra 2,500 to 5K just sitting around.
Thank you for the video. I have the CT200h. Same engine. Common problem with these cars. Thank you for looking out for your fellow humans. Much appreciated.
HOw is it now? In general this stuffs will double or triple your actual proper repair cost since you messup the AC box/heater cores, radiators, waterpump, engine blocks, cooling passages, etc.
I used a bottle of Steel Seal to fix my head gasket, drained the coolant, removed the thermostat, flushed the cooling system really good, Then use a radiator cleaner to clean the cooling system , Make sure to flush out all the cleaner 100%, When engine is 100% cold add steel seal with distilled water, turn heater on high & let idle for 30 mins with the radiator cap off........Let it cool for 1 hour the let idle again for 30 mins with the radiator cap on...........next morning let it idle for another 30 mins then removed all water from the system to let the steel seal cure for 24 hours, Replace the thermostat, fill with coolant and your good to go. Mine has been running perfect for 70k miles now as i use the car for uber & lyft, Only cost me about $120 total.
Did you buy steel seal from amazon ? I am also uber driver this happened pretty much cause we be driving so much in traffic the head gasket wears itself out i watched a nice video on why this only happens on hybrids
I have misfire and the shop told me coolant in cyl. 4. They told me fix is $3k and used engine from japan is $4k. Would you mind tell me does the steel seal still working. My car still run but misfire but CEL only turn one when it is really rough. Thanks for helping.
I'm having same problem 2010 prius z200 engine .I cleaned out the EGR cooler intake manifold ..replace plugs .cleaned the injectors..cleaned the EGR valve still clanking .and same p0301 code p0300 .car is no loosing any coolant .bought it two weeks ago sucks .I know I can put that stuff in to seal the gasket but sooner or later it will happen again I know is a big job but got to do the right thing guys a temporary fix will leave you stranded when you least expect it .not good idea ...I don't have the heart to pour that stuff in and fix it just to sell it . I told the guy that sold it to me ,that anything you do wrong to others will come back to you sooner or later I told him you should had told me the truth dude. I know I'm stuck with it now. God sees everything nothing scape His eyes ...and like I've said cheap fix and sell it to someone else won't work for me, I Can't see anyone going through same thing I'm going through. Just to get even and let someone else get the same problem.....be wise love your fellow brother. Treat others the way you want to be treated...blessings
Thank you for the video. I have a 2010 Prius, and I have the same problem. I took it to the dealer and that's the problem than they came up with. I'll give Thermagasket a try, Thanks so much for this video!!!
DO NOT DO THIS to your Prius IF you plan on keeping the car!!! Bought ours brand new in 2013 and it has 250K miles, but recently developed the Bad Head Gasket “shakes” issue. Thankfully found Gasket Masters videos BEFORE seeing this guys so-called “fix”. Am in process of doing GM’s excellent REAL fix. Correcting the issues is an involved project but not overly expensive DIY, unless you have other problems like a bad water pump. Also fixed/cleaned my EGR/coolant loop and throttle body/intake manifold, which were nearly blocked with carbon/soot. All in, I will spend about 3 days & $300 to have a vehicle that should last ANOTHER 250K miles. BTW in many cities GM can do the real fix in half a day for allot less than $2000. They also have videos that show what you do to an engine when you use this guys liquid “used car salesman trick”.
If you’re in a pinch the head gasket sealer will work for awhile but it will ultimately still fail. The sealer then clogs the passageways and radiator as well. Best to just replace head gasket. Otherwise your just prolonging the problem. I’ve replaced 4 of these head gaskets, it’s fairly easy. Gasket masters have some great videos on how to do it.
As soon as the coolant leak stops, drain all the coolant out that might contain the gasket sealer. Sometimes the heater core has to be flushed too. Clean the intake, egr pipe/cooler. Also if the coolant tank plastic looks yellow, replace it too. It should be white like the inverter coolant reservoir.
have same problem with my prius. but used Bars head gasket sealer 1111. placed prius in maintenace mode put in the coolant overflow tank let idle for 15 minutes, shut off and let cool down. done. Bars stop leak stays in coolant. one month and 1000 miles later runs great.
the bars stop leak will last four months until coolant is lost. I have repeated this every four months with a complete coolant flush each time and using half of the bars stop leak bottle over the past year.
@@GrindingwithLevi the head gasket leak started back in july 2021 and I use the bars head gasket stop leak every four months. I flush the radiator every time I use this. I added the antifreeze concrete directly and burned up two water pumps due to it being too thick. I now only use the 50/50 antifreeze. I used the k seal I seen on the tv show road kill six months ago and appears to be better than bars product.
Update - 4/19/2020. The car is currently being used to deliver with DoorDash and we are putting about 1200 miles a week on it. Heat works, everything works perfect, avg mpg 46 to 49 per tank. Changed the oil for 0-20 full Synthetic, changed the cabin and air filters and that's it. Car runs like new and is a money maker. I'll post another update in a couple of months or earlier if the head fails. Also, check out Scotty Kilmore on youtube. Very good, honest info on all things car/mechanic related. Stay safe and Best Wishes!!

People DO NOT fill your radiator with stop leak garbage. It may seal the head gasket temporarily but it will also plug the fine ports in the engine , radiator and heater core. This will cost you so much more money later when you have to replace all the other parts it plugs up. I only would use that garbage if I was stranded in a area I had no way of getting home. Also his lower radiator hose clamp isn't fully on the thermostat, that will be a issue for sure.
How is the car doing? Any updates? I’m having the same situation with my 2010 Prius. I don’t have the money for a motor swap or a head gasket repair. I need to buy a bottle of this head gasket repair.
Sorry I took so long to answer. car is running great, very happy. I did have to put the thermostat back in as it was taking forever to warm up in the Colorado Winter. No more check engine lights, no more shudder. I am one happy camper!!!!! Best wishes!!
Long Story short, I put the Bars head gasket sealer on January 9, 2020 in my 2010 Prius (with out the thermostat) and used water only (not coolant). Test drove it for 3 weeks and no more Engine Jumping. Everything worked fine except the engine light came on due to the thermostat not being in the motor. ( I checked it with the autozone Code Reader they provide). So I put the thermostat back in with coolant and about a week and a half later my Prius started to stall on the freeway on the way to work. My dashboard lit up like a Christmas tree! Especially the TRIANGLE OF DEATH 💀 also said CHECK HYBRID SYSTEM. So I had it towed home and checked it with the Code Reader and it gave me Water Pump Code. ( sorry I don’t remember the codes). So I bought a $440 water pump from Autozone with Lifetime Warranty and put it in my car WITHOUT the thermostat. And so far the car is running ok except with the check engine light on because of the thermostat. ...and that’s where I’m at right now. (Sorry for the so call short story)😐
@@mrlatnemis1849 Can't see why the check engine light for no thermostat. I ran it without a thermostat for 2 months no issue. Only reason I put it in was because it was taking too long to warm up. Regardless, glad you are running well again.
Hey thanks for the video I I also think the Prius is the best car in the world Got 2014 prius p0101 losing coolant too so thinking of Blue Devil or Thermagasket before removing the gasket
so you removed the engine waterpump's thermostat as a safety precaution against it being damaged by the thermagasket mixture. it take a little cry and some tight spot moments to remove that thermostat that but a good idea if you dont want to damage sensitive parts.
wow thanks a lot! the most useful video on youtube! never imagined head gasked can be fixed this way!!! i didnt tried it yet ... i hope i can find it in my country ...
Yes I did. It was taking longer than I expected to warm up so I had to leave the car running too long before I could drive it on really cold days. So far still running strong.
Just use butt connectors it's easy you don't need a harness bud. Get a little wind proof lighter and some strips and crimp, butt connect the wires together and heat shrink the butt connectors. My head is blown too I just scoped my cylinders and there's oil in 2 of the cylinders.
Thanks for the tip. I ended up fixing the harness myself my watching videos on RU-vid. And connecting it back together. I also had put the thermostat back in as the car was taking too long the heat up especially below 20 degrees Fahrenheit here in Colorado. Other than that I'm happy as hell.
Thank you so much for this video guide! I’ve scoured the internet for a guide specifically for a Prius when it comes to these head gasket sealer methods and yours is the most comprehensive that I’ve found. I’m gonna try the same thing on my Gen 3 Prius I’m just using a different brand (not blue devil). I love my Prius too much to let her go!
I’m in the same situation my car is at the shop overnight right now cylinder 1 misfire. What do you suggest I do and how quickly wilt he misfire stop after?
drew michael well if you read my comment, it says spark plugs fixed my problem. I didn’t have a coolant leak. I had old spark plus from the previous owner that caused the misfire. My shakey startups and the misfire code that came soon after was alllllll solely related to a bad spark plug in cylinder one causing misfire code on cylinder 1. I then sold the vehicle after it operated flawlessly for 1000 miles and 20 start ups with zero issues whatsoever. Had nothing to do with the head gasket or coolant.
drew michael I’m not a fellow Prius owner, once again, you didn’t read my comment. if you read my comment you’d know I don’t own a Prius. I sold it. Read the comment your replying to next time. you put my name in your comment and told me to do something that had nothing to do with my issue without reading what I said. I sold my Prius already and mine had nothing to do with coolant. Next time make a general comment don’t click to reply to someone’s account using my name to talk about an issue that has nothing to do with me. otherwise it makes you look like you can’t read or know how to make a general comment when you use my account in your comment to make a general suggestion.
Don't do stupid things for head gasket. It won't last long and you ruin heater cores, radiator, waterpump, etc. Heater core job is 14 hours, more than the head gasket. You will have to remove the AC box and additional 5 h labor for AC vacuum and recharge refrigerant with special AC oil, non conductive ND11. It is hell a lot more problems by doing this K-seals unless you will trade it in to Stealership right away
imma try this. just did my head gasket last week and this week it's knocking again. i hope it's because i didn't get the head machined I'm going to probably do it again. with new bolts and gasket and machine shop this time.
Dude, mine did this. I changes the ignition coils, plugs, cleaned the EGR pipe, valve and cooler, and intake manifold. Now it only does it after I've been driving 20 minutes. Wont do it when cold. So, this might be my deal too. No coolant in the oil yet.
@@levijessegonzalez3629 it was the head gasket. Caused by a blockage in the coolant hose somewhere. And because I didn't catch it time, it overheated BIG TIME. Limped to a mechanic and had to change the cooling system as well as the head gasket. That was BIG MONEY. But I did it. Cost about $4,000. That was 50,000 miles ago. Still running great though. 250K miles now and still has original battery. The car is awesome. If I had taken it to a mechanic they might have caught it and fixed it. But I don't regret repairing it. Once I get settled in a car, I'd rather just keep it. Good luck to you. The cooling system cools both the electric syst and the engine. So it's very complicated. Dealership wanted $7,000 for the repair. I found a Toyota expert local to Maryland that gave me a great deal.
@@afdave7 Wow. My water pump went bad. Around that time I was have occasional rough starts only on cold starts...replaced the water pump (it possibly overheated?) and the water pump was perfect. but then the shakes were still there... I then got a check engine light for the p0300 multiple cylinder misfires... So I completely stopped driving it and I am currently cleaning the manifold, EGR, and replacing the spark plugs ignition coils and injectors (bought all of them OEM for $180). If that ALL doesn't work, then I'm unsure weather to do what he is suggesting in the video or do the dreaded head gasket DIY!
@@afdave7 how do I know if my cooling system is bad? Ive been live monitoring the coolant temperature post water pump repair (before the current check engine light cylinder issue) and it stays at 185-198° which is normal. So you think my coolant system is ok?
@@levijessegonzalez3629 it sounds like it's fine. I think we have similar symptoms but a different problem. Sorry I can't help. Thenoverheat issue in my car was obvious and I ignored it. You probably have something different. Best of luck
Hi, before u used the product did u empty the system then use the product or was there any amount of coolant left in the system while running the engine? Just wanna know the procedure, tnx
Sorry for the late reply. I flushed the whole cooling system. You really need to get all the coolant out and take out the thermostat so that it works right. I forgot to buy coolant flush so I used baking soda and vinegar to flush everything out. Still driving like a million bucks today!
Hey Orlando, thank you for the video, but question is did you reflush the system 2 weeks after adding Thermagasket Head & Block Treatment Kit as some recommend or did you just keep it in there??? There are sayings if left too long it will clog the small passages in the cooling system! Please keep us updated... Thank you...
Hello. I left in in there for about 3 or 4 weeks but I ended up emptying it out and refilling it with 50/50 coolant as the car was taking too long to warm up in the Colorado weather. Not exactly a thorough flush but close enough.
I use to change out the synthetic oil every five thousand miles, but then started stretching it to like 7,000. Big mistake. The Prius got use to having it done every 5,000. 195,000, and now had multiple misfires. Change your synthetic, yes, even synthetic, each 5,000 miles. Now I've spent money on coils, plugs, MAF, etc.
lol let me tell you. This problem is not exclusive to the 3rd gen. I have the exact same issue on my 01 Prius. the 08 Prius has the same engine but no problem with the head gasket. however, they both don't hold oil very long. But my 01 has that terrible shutter every now and then too. Also a misfire on cylinder #1 when it happens. I've replaced the coils plugs and injectors. I've only ever used full synthetic oil on all my cars. I may consider replacing the head gasket. but its been like that for over 4yrs.
Hold on I'm confused. So you flushed out the coolant with baking soda/vinegar and then water, then you put the thermagasket in and ran the engine for an hour, and then what? You have to empty out the thermagasket first, and then put the coolant in, or the coolant goes in with the thermagasket still in there?
I emptied it out and put 50/50 coolant in it. Not exactly a thorough flush but close enough. So far so good. As of today 5/18.2020 car is running strong.
car still running good? my water pump went out. I replaced it. and around that time I got intermittent shakes but not all the time only on cold startups. got first cylinder and also 3rd and sometimes 4th codes. I bought plugs, injectors and coils going to replace all of it (147k. they need replacing anyway). going to clean the EGR and manifold. If ALL that doesn't work, then I will do what you say with this stuff.
Thanks for the video, Orlando Rodriguez. It helps all of us try to fix these problems, so I'm greatful for the solution you provided. However, I've had the engine knocking problem for months at low RPM at startup or after stop signs/red lights. I replaced spark plugs and all iginiton coils, and also crankshaft sensor (because the engine finally died with triangle light). I go it rolling again, after all that, but the shaking still exists. Another more likely problem is EGR related as seen in this video. I'll be persuing this solution: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ndnrYbpVclo.html
Hi Donald. Car is running flawlessly. No more shakes no more engine lights. I did have to reinstall the thermostat as it was taking forever for the car to warm up in the Colorado winter. Best of luck to you
Super happy so far. I'll make a follow up video and post it today. I did end up reinstalling the thermostat as it was taking forever to warm up in the Colorado winter. Other than that it been perfect.
Engine Light was on as I broke the knock sensor wire. I fixed the wire, cleared the code and it never came back. I did reinstall the thermostat as the car was taking forever to warm up in the Colorado winter. So far very happy.
Thanks for this awesome video, Orlando. I'm on my 3rd Prius (a 2018 Prius Two Eco). Before that, I had a 2010 Prius Four and a 2013 Prius v. I LOVE these cars.
Thank you for posting the video. We have a 2010 Prius with 342,000km on it has ran great up to now. We did have the rattling going on didn't know what it was but when the heat stopped (we live in Canada) we found out coolant was leaking. Once you did this repair did the heater work again? Thanks again for posting the video!!
It could be the EGR is really clogged up that will cause a misfire too. But you right about the gasket issues. I just did a video on cleaning the EGR it's kind of a pain too
@@SurferTy be wary of gasket sealer unless your prepared to get a new engine. if enough of it goes into the cylinder it will score up the rings and walls as it is abrasive. it may give your more time. I just changed the headgasket on mine Friday. was about a 9 hour job. I could do it in 6 next time probably but what a pain. I will be locking my cams with rags first next time. quite a bit of time to just scrape and prep all gasket areas. I was running without my o ring on the coolant cap for 2 weeks. almost solves the issue. But car will boil coolant if hot in ran hard. Better than coolant hydro locking engine though.
@@TimZ007 yea. It’s a tough call. I am not going to to the head gasket myself. With quotes at $1,500. I figure i could buy another engine and swap for $2,500. Even if i replace the gasket. The engine head could be warped. Then i still have to engine swap.

Hey Orlando...I have the same 2010 Prius as you got. I got a water pump check engine light 3 days ago. I used the Troque pro to clear the engine light, it didn't come back yesterday but it just came up today but with a different code Cylinder 1 mis-fire. Do you think its the water pump gone bad that cause engine over heat that gives a mis-fire code? I got heat inside the cabin though. My coolant is NOT leaking. Should I just replace the water pump that will solve the mis-fire problem too?
Sorry I took so long to answer. If you have a misfire and you are not losing coolant at all, it should be either a coil or a plug. Change the plugs to see what happens, if that doesn't fix it just buy 1 coil for the bad cylinder. Regarding the water pump, I don't think it has anything to do with the misfire but i would definitely replace it as you don't want the car or the inverter to overheat. That would cause major problems!! Good Luck!
Heater had stopped working because I was losing coolant. Once the level falls below a certain point the heater lines don't pickup coolant to circulate through the heater core so no heat unless you keep adding coolant.
Hi Orlando, , My 2011 Prius has 174000 Miles, My Question to you is, Piston's 1 and 4 are misfiring and It burns oil, wondering if also this could be the head gasket? and the car sometimes does that shake and rattle when first started. I have installed a catch can from the PCV valve to the Catch Can. I usually have to empty it every 1000 miles or so. Its not full but there is about 1/8 to 1/4 inch of oil in the can. Love to hear for your best answer on this, Thanks.
Sorry Andrew, I have no good answer for you. There is a product out there you can buy @ autozone or some other parts stores and it's a head gasket leak checker. Basically a blue liquid that turns green if it detects exhaust in the cooling system, not expensive and maybe worth a try. Good luck.
Bite the bullet and DIY head gasket replacement. Check out gasket masters video on step by step instructions on gen 3 prius head gasket replacment. It's labor intensive, but definitely a do-able project for average handy person.
Check oil if it's milky in the dipstick or oil cap that's a sign. Are you loosing coolant. Do a leak down test. Check inside cylinders with a borescope in the spark plug holes might get lucky an see antifreeze inside especially if car has been sitting for days or weeks. Stick a long rod or screwdriver to detect moisture in tip of object you are using inside the spark plug hole or Look inside spark plug hole with a flashlight if you don't have a borescope.
If you still have the Prius and still have the same problem you might want to try K-seal I never tried it but great reviews on Amazon but they sell it at Advance, auto zone and I'm guessing Walmart. good luck

@@truckerjay4754 Oh yeah, that heat exchanger also cost a lot of money, easily $2000 with the catalytic converter unit replacement. Don't ever put anything but Toyota SLLC only in any Toyota car. There is a recall or just TSB about that heat exchanger. If it is a recall, you can get it fixed for free, if it is TSB, probably you still can get it up to 8 years 80k miles, Federal Emission Law., because it includes catalytic converter as one unit.

I've replaced my engine and I'm still having this problem. My car rattles when it starts and the guy who replaced the engine said it's the engine mount. I just don';t know what to do from here. I already paid for the used engine.
It's going to be you're engine mounts but which ones pop you're hood hand have someone watch you're engine once you turn it on make sure you get the right engine mounts not a fun job good lick.
Maybe he never replace engine? Or got an engine that had the same issue since it seems to be a common problem. Also was the original engine diagnose correctly? A leak down test can be used to see if a cylinder is leaking and from where. Was there mixture of coolant in the oil? Where you loosing coolant or no heat inside the car. Also a borescope can be used to look inside cylinder that's misfiring, top of piston will probably have different pattern of carbon deposits if antifreeze is entering or look wet. Also might get lucky and see antifreeze inside, especially if car has been sitting for days or weeks. Check spark plugs for clues also. If you don't have a borescope try looking in there with a flashlight or stick a rod to see if it gets some moisture in the tip in the misfiring cylinder/s
My Prius was having this knocking sound problem sometime around 160k miles. I took it in and the guy replaced all the spark plugs and ignition coils for #2 & #4. Next day... knocking sound again! That was Oct 26th. Took it in again and that's when he told me I've got a blow head gasket. Then strangely enough, the knocking sound stopped happening for about 3 weeks. Now it's happening almost daily but it's pretty mild. Only once did it sustain for about 5-10 seconds. The check engine light came on the other night but went away the next day! I know I've got to repair or replace but maybe this will be a temporary fix!

Yes adding sealant in cooling system is bad idea. Just learn how to DIY and the knowledge of having done your own gasket replacement will be pretty useful for every other car project down the line prius or not.
