Head of the Snake Part 2: A New Kind of War - Danger Close with Jack Carr

In May of 2011, Mark Owen crossed the Afghanistan-Pakistan border on a mission to capture/kill Osama bin Laden, the leader of al-Qaeda - to decapitate “The Head of the Snake.”
But that night in Abbottabad, Pakistan is just a part of Mark’s story.
In this special four-part series of Danger Close, Jack sits down for an extended interview with Mark to discuss the story you haven’t heard. Starting with Mark’s childhood in a remote Alaskan community to his early days in the SEAL Teams to 9/11 and the sustained combat that followed to his selection and training for a team at the highest echelons of special operations, this is Mark Owen unfiltered, candid, and uncensored. Mark would go on to take part in high-profile operations like the mission to rescue Captain Richard Phillips from Somali pirates and the search for Bowe Bergdahl. He would later work his way up a stairwell in a compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan and into a hallway where the most wanted terrorist in the world waited…
But, as Jack and Mark discuss, the aftermath of the raid would not only change the public profile of Naval Special Warfare, it would also alter the course of Mark’s life in ways he could have never anticipated.
IRONCLAD and SIG Sauer proudly present, The Head of the Snake: The Killing of UBL, a special Danger Close event.
Part 2: A New Kind of War
In the weeks following the 9/11 attacks, the United States found itself grappling with a new war-and a new kind of warfare.
In this episode of the Head of the Snake series, Mark Owen discusses the early days of the war in Afghanistan and what military leaders got wrong in the wake of 9/11. As special operations tactics began to evolve, so did their approach to technology. Jack and Mark discuss the evolution of gear, and the role it’s played in the fight against terror.
As the U.S. military adapts to an evolved style of warfare, Mark found himself on one of his team’s most dangerous missions to date: Searching for missing Army soldier Bowe Bergdahl in the lawless badlands of Afghanistan.
Mark Owen’s first book - No Easy Day: The Firsthand Account of the Mission that Killed Osama Bin Laden
Mark Owen’s second book - No Hero: The Evolution of a Navy SEAL

Today’s episode is presented by SIG Sauer.

There are many of the Special Ops-SEALs who are not photographed, even today. Even retired. I have no doubt that there are certain Special Ops long retired, still keeping their anonymity today. Look how long we tracked Bin Laden. The same shoe fits on the enemy side.

@mickfunny4185
@mickfunny4185 2 года назад
@Michael Parks mistake was trying to keep a tiny footprint in AFG while backing corruption. That never works long term. 150k troops, plus an equal number of teachers and doctors, and a Congress that listened to the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR), But no we couldn’t have that. 2 Republican and 2 Democrat presidents were unwilling to make the hard decisions for a functioning Afghanistan. Now AFG is starving, children dying from malnutrition, and Taliban fighting other Afghans.

Coincidentally, I just read an article regarding the taliban stating our dogs were "unsanitary and dirty" while looking into the dog that was taken from a British SOF unit. I typically like Jaco, but Mark should of chose a venue like Shawn Ryan or Mike Ritland to get his story out. The interview was supposed to be about “him” and finally telling his story. Instead we got about 70/30 Jack’s life and story.. Mark had to fight for air time throughout this whole thing and Jack would keep over talking drowning him out. Mark has confirmed the story, on here and in his 2012 book. The point man (who had already killed bin laden’s son…khaled) fired two shots at laden as his head appeared in a doorway. The point man then tackled two women who were in the same room. According to Mark, laden was still breathing so he shot him twice more. And Rib’s story also confirms the point man fired the first two shots that dropped bin laden, but instead he fired the shots to finish him off.

Watching this simply reinforces the depressive uselessness of knowing and recognising what is morally right and what ugliness is required to be done in order to succeed in the mission and in face of professional pen pushes, activists and radicals in government who refuse to grasp the reality of the soldier’s experience. I can see why Jack Carr wrote the James Reece books in order to express the futility of responding to operational frustration, which politicians refuse to understand and consider. One gets the feeling that the decision makers in Washington are utterly blindly amoral. The lack value, moral fortitude and who fail to appreciate the American Democratic experience. In my case as an Australian soldier medic in Iraq 1991 our government was in a chaos of indecision . Their inability to lead with confidence was felt by me, a lowly private wanting very much to successfully perform the job I had freely signed up for. The ROE’s changed every single day. In response to leadership failure we as a section on the ground got together and made a commitment to ignore the ROE’s. Our role at the coalface of patrolling the Iraqi space without intelligence demanded a precise awareness. We collectively refused the bullshit and allow ourselves to be killed or maimed by the decisions of politicians and the political activists at home. Every single day our ‘O’ groups basically informed us that we would have to take a KIA or a WIA before we could consider the option to return fire. Total bullshit. Like I said we discussed amongst ourselves and this included our junior NCO’s, who patrolled with us and shared the risks. Every single Army officer happily bent over to have their anus’ rammed and pounded by senior military and the political activists at home who felt that our lives were expendable in the spirit of a useless and piss-weak platonic feel good latte philosophical ideology. Basically bullshit. Nothing changes. It’s about power and as a soldier, as a man I was young dumb and full of cum.

Does anyone have a rough estimate of how many SEALs become authors?

All of them. Dick started the tradition and then he got caught selling hand grenades, or maybe it was the other way around. Just to be clear "all of them" is a joke, im being hyperbolic to make a point.

Read in one of military mags(2021) that there are around 2200-2300 SEALs. Jack Carr is the best poster boy for the Special Ops, especially the SEALs, the Navy has ever had. He said way back towards the beginning that he wanted to interact with guest speakers like it was sitting down with the guys at the local watering hole and exchanging stories. That is exactly the feel of Carr’s podcast interviews. Carr served at all levels in the SEALs. Everything that has come up in the past 15 years, he knows of the background, of the Ops and the operators. He also knows what can be mentioned and what is a no-no. You learn additional, personal info, how different the Ops were, the differing experiences had. Jack pulls that out of those he has interviewed through his interaction with them, applying his knowledge too. I like how he channels the direction of the conversation. You learn details of how these men executed their jobs. As to thinking just SEALs are writing books, many are the ones that include the realistic details in thriller novels, the ones most popular. They aren’t like the ones written 20-30 years ago. Thriller novels have evolved to reality.These are produced from the memories these operators had of the actual operations and knowledge of intelligence. I would rather read reality from those who actually experienced it in the field. Many non-military cannot capture the actual reality of the battlefield. I for one welcome these newbies and the reality tale they relate.

55:00 forward is infuriating. Warriors risking their lives needlessly so incompetent grandstanders can advance their careers

@JackCarrUSA Interesting material, nice set, well made, like it, just small point of note. Too long, you could have broken this down on chapters, and made a short series, also a lot more reminiscing that necessary. Do not take me wrong. I like it and the idea, not detracting, constructive. There are many stories intertwined and much of the portent information maybe lost in the extra noise.

Why continue to call him "Mark"? Doesn't everyone know his real name, at this point?

this is ridiculous, worrying about offending people we r at war with . Dogs mean more to me than my enemies ever will. That piss me off hearing that the higher ups let the enemy manipulate them into changing the rules. What really pisses me off even more is that our biggest enemy is our own president
