In this video I head to the River Clyde near Bothwell with absolutely no idea what I'm going to photograph.
With no restrictions on my photography subjects or techniques I end up with images of woods, the river, macro, abstract and TRY some wildlife photography.

‘Barrs Irn Bru, made in Scotland, from GIRDERS’ spoken in a heavy Scottish accent. I used to love that ad in my younger years. Ha! Enjoyed this calm, peaceful video. The tree roots images were my favorites, I am always on the lookout for that kind of thing when out with my camera.

Great video John, the river definatly helped with subject matter. The Iron Bru is definatly out early....... It goes to show how much we some times miss images when we concentrate on what we set out for.....

I really enjoyed this video John because it’s the type of thing I do all the time, I never or rarely have a plan just a wander about😊Really liked the arty stuff.

Great video again John... Glad to see the Irn Bru bush thriving so early in the season. I'll keep an eye out for them next week when I'm up in the Highlands. That reminds me... Must have a look to see how the Yorkshire Pudding trees are doing down here. 🙂

Haha! Thanks Garry! Hopefully the yorkies are doing well. Its the ecky thump pudding crop i'm always worried about. You dont see many of those nowadays!

I loved this video on a number of points. Firstly, I could have watched those whorls all day. They were so hypnotic, and just as I was thinking that, you said pretty much the same. Secondly, I nearly choked on my mouthful of tea as I laughed at the flowering Irn bru bush, and thirdly, yes, going without a plan can be a really interesting experience. Not least because it helps you to actually LOOK for subject matter, and draws you into your environment far more than just snapping away at an obvious view. Sometimes this can really help improve your technique if you find yourself in a bit of a rut. Really good video this week John, thank you. My favourites were the root shots, not ones I would normally take myself, but they looked amazing so will attempt those next time I get a chance!

Another great video John. I'm always impressed how you manage to find compositions even when the weather and nature are not playing ball.,other than the Iron Bru bush ,definitely flowering early this year .loved the birds chirping in the background a positive sign that spring is just round the corner. Keep up the great work. If you are looking for another area for a wander, Baron's Haugh and Dalzell Estate in Motherwell worth a visit.

Another great video, John. Looks like you had fun with it. Loved the rock/roots shots. My kind of aesthetic!! Used to drive a friend of mine nuts!!😂 Nice to know I’m not the only one who sees beauty in such things.

Thanks James. There are quite a few old trees like that along the river side and i think i shot them all but the video was in danger of becoming a roots only video so most were removed before the final edit!

Definitely was a good idea. Encouraged at the variety of shots, seeing what many would not give a second glance to. Great stuff👍

I seem to be doing just that more often now, as you mentioned, John it is just enjoyable getting out and any shots are a bonus, liked your detail shots, in the overcast conditions you can get some nice detail.

I suppose this sums up a lot of my photography. Go somewhere and see what you can see; especially when the light, mist, snow, sunsets etc just isn't going to happen. Also, gives you the chance to recce for more suitable conditions. Its a pity to see Bothwell Castle constantly covered in scaffolding. I suppose if you make your fortress out of soft red local sandstone its bound to eventually turn into a pile of sandy hummocks. Particularly liked the tree route shots, when all you've got is a great big softbox overhead you might as well go for the details. Is this the new video camera in use ?
@JohnMcKennaPhotography
@JohnMcKennaPhotography 7 месяцев назад
aye, had a bit of an issue with the scaffolding (in particular, the reasons given on the signs outside, but that's a long story!). Same (new) camera as before, but, with slightly tweaked settings following our emails

I think the new in phrase is 'Controlled Deterioration ' or some such. I know the guy in charge of the physical building management for HES, a keen photographer. The truth is there's not the money to do the work to repair and replacing isn't the 'done' thing anyway these days. Which just leaves some places looking like abandoned building sites. @@JohnMcKennaPhotography
