As most of you have probably seen on Facebook and RU-vid, there is a method of restoring headlights going around the internet using OFF Deep Woods or a similar DEET containing bug repellent spray. At first I thought it was a joke, but I investigated further and found out it DOES work, but it isn't a perfect method. Here I address some of the problems with the OFF method, and teach you how to do it yourself!

This works great. You need to spay a couple coats of UV protectant after to make it last a long time.

Thank you so much for the vinegar after wash tip! Your video is a great example of getting to the point and promoting your business in a healthy manor, so many people waste our time with ramblings of off topic crap that nobody tuned in for. I hope people in Cincinnati see this and go to your shop. I'm in Florida but i rep the who dey nation lol Go bengals!

Thanks for this information! I'll try to remember it when my headlights get foggy a few years down the road. This is a lot better than the expensive and tiresome kits I bought to clear the lights on my last car!

Thanks for the tip. Using off, washing with Windex and then waxing works but this looks easier and probably works better by the Vinegar neutralizing the Deet.

Good review, thanks. YES it worked and the vinegar removed the rest of the grime.

I tried this method and it worked GREAT..! He's right, the Vinegar is the key to removing the tacky surface after cleaning, also.. Only do it once per cleaning! I thought if I kept cleaning a few times with the Deet ti would get cleaner but found the opposite happens, the lens becomes blurry, maybe too much plastic melting, not sure.. But just once and be done. I also treated them with a nice couple coats of Car wax and buffed to help protect from UV..

Thank you so much for the video , have a question, I left a little bottle of deet spray in glove compartment, which manufactures felt melted and became a goop mess 😀 How can I fix without spending so much at dealer? 🤙🏼

I'm going to try this method. I have been told that part of what you're removing in addition to the oxidation is a protective coating of gloss. it was recommended to me that after you have done all that you said in the video, then use something like Rust-Oleum gloss spray to seal and restore the protective gloss coating. let me know what you think.

My 1990 Toyota Camry had glass headlight lenses that looked great until I got rid of it decades later. Why did the car makers stop using glass and switch to plastic? I think that most people would be willing to spend a little more for their new car to totally avoid the cloudy lenses by having glass. Thanks.
@ulogy
@ulogy 3 года назад
Several reasons, namely safety (glass can shatter from impacts or more importantly thermal shock [driving in winter if your lens goes from 110 to -20 in the span of 6 minutes every day for a year...not a great time.]) as well as weight. Saving 5-10 pounds on the curb weight can eek out another 0.01 MPG. Glass also wasn't without its issues, you couldn't reasonably make a modern projector lens with it. It certainly can't handle the heat of a HID (see thermal shock comment above) and while it didn't haze it did pit badly over time, leading to a less noticeable but still problematic refraction of light.
@bradysimmons84
@bradysimmons84 3 года назад
Easier and cheaper to form and shape the plastic . It allows for development of a variety of shapes to go along with creating new models. Most glass headlights are often squared and "boxy" whereas the plastic ones you could probably shape them however you'd want them to be.

So what I see based on video and comments, , wipe with 40% deet, wash with with alcohol, seal with a proper plastic clear coat made for headlights. Dont use clear coat plastic paint. If we can tune this properly, a wipe only solution that looks pretty decent can be had.
