Thanks for that comparison which is indeed really useful! I will probably save money by choosing the DT880, in replacement of my old pair of AKG. And what I like most in your gear review, and I am so grateful for it, is that you don't recommend pieces of equipment that would be overkill.

Glad to see this review! Ive used both in the past as well. One observation I have is that the Beyerdynamic 880's tend to be too bright for my drumset bashed ears (another lifetime ago), so after awhile I would have ear aches using them. I don't have that same problem with the HD 650's though, partly because it doesn't have as much boost in the mid-high frequency range as the 880's.

I am the proud owner of the following AKG headphones: K240 MII, K371, K612 Pro, K275, K245 (open/semi-open), K175 (On Ear), K92, K182. In addition I’m also an equally proud owner of the Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro 80 ohms, DT 880 Pro, DT 240 Pro, and the DT 990 Pro!!!!! All of the Beyerdynamic and the AKG headphones shine with classical music. Update: I am also the proud owner of the following Sennheiser headphones; HD 660s, HD 600, HD 650, HD 560s, and the HD 599! Sennheiser is just as phenomenal in both sound and build! Great video! Great channel! Being a classical music lover and audio enthusiast, I subscribed immediately!!

I'm very late to this video, but I just wanted to say two things. Firstly, I really appreciate the practical perspective and your not getting bogged down in minutiae. Secondly, I wanted to mention that Beyerdynamic sell replacement parts for every piece on your 880s, so rather than binning the old ones when the new ones arrive, you could easily repair them as a spare set. Beyer even sell the different coiled and non coiled cables (only your 250 ohm studio version is coiled) so if you or anyone you know can solder you could actually replace the coiled cable on your old set with a longer straight cable and have a set for those occasions where the coiled cable doesn't reach.

Anne - Thanks for the quick response to impedance question. It's so refreshing to see an equipment review on RU-vid by an actual GROWN-UP who knows what they're talking about, and does so as articulately as you. Your style of presentation here led me to look at other videos on your channel. Sure glad I did! For those of you who may have just stumbled into this headphone review (as I did), I'd highly encourage you to look at Anne's other videos. Thank you for this review. It's refreshing not to have what I feel is an "audiophile" perspective through a forum post, rather, a real experience. I have HD598's and have had HD650's on my list for many years. I will be purchasing DT880's as the price in Australia is far more cost effective than HD650's and I think I'll be very happy with that decision based on your insightful review

Hello! This was actually a very useful comparison-review! Ultimately, you didn’t say which ones are “better” but it just may be that for people who are experienced in recording and mixing, the equipment itself is less important than the “ear” and a perception on what sounds natural. After all, people have been making music and recording it for a hundred years now and the equipment we have today, even modestly priced one, is much better than what they had just twenty years ago. Still, it didn’t prevent them from making some wonderful recordings. In this regard, I really think your review has a lot of merit. So, a surprisingly useful comparison. Thank you! Also, you are incomparably more literate than a large majority of people making videos and English is not even your first language, I take it. So, well done on that too!

That was a really great, practical presentation. Very well done! I am curious though, what the impedance is on the Beyerdynamic phones. If I'm not mistaken, they come in 32, 250, and 600 Ohm versions. Can you tell me which ones you are reviewing?
@AnneKathrinDernComposer
@AnneKathrinDernComposer 3 года назад
Thanks for watching! I'm reviewing the 250 Ohm version. I think for the 600 Ohm you'd need a dedicated expensive headphone pre-amp and the 32 Ohm would be for really weak pre-amps (like the ones in laptops, smartphones, etc.).

Do you think one could compose music in closed-back headphones? I'm thinking whether to get DT880 or DT1770. Everyone seems to recommend open-backs for these purposes, but I've always liked it when there is as little bleed as possible, and the semi-open ones are described as still having some bleed. I'm afraid that hearing what's going on in the real world around me might end up annoying me (I don't ever collaborate on music with people next to me and I don't think that's gonna change, I'm just a solo amateur). I like to completely immerse myself in the music.

For the scarlett, which i also own, foscurite recommends headphone impedances up to 250 ohms. However the hd650/hd6xx has 300. i'm about to buy either the hd6xx or the 880 but this is concerning me. From your own experience, do you feel that the scarlett underperforms or has any problem with it?

Thanks Anne-Kathrin! I am returning a recent purchase of AKG 271 MKII in favor of a pair of Beyers (so far that is my aim). Reason being that if I slightly move my head (looking at the keyboard, my screen, out the window) the cable brushes against my shoulder or chin, and it makes a loud whooshy noise. It's so annoying! I'm curious if you experience this with the DT880Pro? You many not see my question before I go to the store, but I was curious if this happens to you. Cheers! Andre

Hi Anne, nice video. I'm just upgrading my headphones to a pair of DT990. About 15:20 you can find a replacement for the ear pads and the headband if you feel that they're starting to fall apart both for less than 20 bucks and you don't have to replace all the headphones spending way more. Hope this helps. Thank you for the videos and have a great day.

Interesting topic for RU-vid :) I've used both for quite a few years and they are both outstanding. The HD650 I reserve for occasional proofing the mix or mastering of material. You may want to consider upgrading the cable to take full advantage of their fantastic fidelity. Slightly more often I use the DT880, but not so much day to day either. The DT770 has slightly better resolution in the bass but lacks a bit of the high end resolution. The AKG K240 is also another great day to day set. Swapping headphones every few hours helps with listening fatigue and changes the pressure against your ears, which is not fun when it starts to irritate them. Each set will bring different aspects of the music and sound to the forefront. So the more, the merrier :)

Really glad you enjoy my videos. There is an argument to be made for knowing your equipment but that only goes so far. After all you can't correct frequencies you can't hear and if especially the low mids are unbalanced (as they usually are on closed backs), the mixes will either be too muddy or two bright. When I switched from the DT770s to the DT880s I was shocked by how many bad frequencies I had missed and how unbalanced my mixes were - simply because I couldn't hear those on the 770s.

I've heard the PC150s (old/ based on the 595s or something) Custom One pros and the MMX300s and both the Beyers are bass heavy so for you to say the 880s are not as warm as the 650s is kinda striking to me. It's a personal choice that stems from my time as an assistant when I simply had to work on headphones a lot, especially when sharing a room at times. It was also helpful as a reference when I was working for different composers in different spaces. Speakers are great too and certainly preferred by some but one needs a consistent room that is the proper size and acoustically treated. Otherwise even the best speakers in the world won't be helpful at all. I don't have a treated room right now and since I will be moving to a different space eventually, it doesn't make sense to spend thousands of $$$ into treatment. Aside from that, I prefer the amount of detail I can hear on headphones and it's certainly more cost effective for my business to invest into various pairs of studio headphones that were designed for mixing. It also enables me to work early in the morning or late at night if I need to without bothering anyone. And of course it does help to hear my music on headphones because that's most likely how the audience will eventually consume the media (once it's had its theatrical run etc.).

As far as having to send the BD headphones back for repair if the cable fails -- I recently had to replace a worn cable on my DT770 Pros (it took 15+ years to wear out). BD sell the replacement cable as a spare part, complete with new strain relief and plug, so I did the repair myself. If you don't mind doing a little soldering, it's a straightforward repair. I like that BD are happy to sell spare parts like this.

These work great through both my headphone amp and my audio interface for orchestral composition. Sennheiser does durable stuff... My Sennheiser HD-560 Ovation II-s that I use for mixing are officially 25 years old this year (!!) and they sound and feel superb. Aside from the obvious pad exchange from time-to-time and a cable change at one point (user changable), I had zero issues with them. They sound amazing even today even after 25 years :D

Interesting video. Two issues remain for me: 1) When I look for the Beyerdynamics you can choose 60 (edit: typo, should be 80) or 250 ohms, I believe. Why or when does that matter. 2) Do you (have to) replace the earpads? My KRKs earpads tore within a year or two and replacement was a pain in the ass (finding and buying them, als well as the physical act of replacing). I also think over the years you easily might have to pay 50% of the price of of your new set for those (multiple) ear pad replacements. The Beyerdynamics ones look pretty replaceable. In the past my (far cheaper, but pricey on a student budget) Sennheiser bare foam earpads crumbled rather soon to powder, so this seems an basic issue.

The 250s (same with all cans I think) have thin wire / coil close to the magnet, giving a good spec with inevitably higher resistance. I don't think the resistance itself makes anything better, it's the proximity of coil to magnet. I used to use 770/250s for years but blew quite a few (thinner wire I guess). Beyer used to have a free new for old replacement deal, and when that stopped they became too expensive. (Now I'm HD650s.)

Different applications and preferences for the 880 and 650. Very good demo/presentation. Even the microphones from those respected companies are excellent as well. I have a few of them. alles ist gut👍🏼🎧

The big advantage of the dual, detachable cable is the ability to drive headphones from a balanced amp output. A shame, because Beyers have really great sound, but you cannot convert them for balanced input without major modifications. At that point, might as well get a proper balanced input set of cans.

I live on a small island in the Atlantic (Bermuda) and demoing anything is-especially now with Covid-virtually impossible. When traveling is safe again, I would really love to hear the (also German) HEDD-Heinz Electrodynamic Design Deutschland-Audio air motion transformer products-both the speakers and the HEDDphones... Heinz was one of the original designers at Adam Audio who developed the A.M.T tweeter technology. Apparently the clarity from the HEDD A.M.T is stunning, and overall the products are excellent.... most curious 🔊🎶✨

Let's hope the music tech stores will still exist then. A big chain in LA is actually closing which will make it very hard going forward to audition equipment. It's a very unfortunate side effect of this situation.

I hate how the Beyer grey pads get flattened when it is worn. It's sound change too. Many people replace the pads very often even 2x a year to preserve the original sound. I personally like the black pads. They are not as soft and the sound kinda boomier but it remains original throughout years
@brianm2850
@brianm2850 Год назад
One big thing...the HD 6X0 series also scales with different/better sources... while that's not true with the 880. Also to add...make sure you change the pads out on both once they start to flatten. Those 880s in the video are looking rough. 😉

Still using my old but trusty HD580 (with cable soldered directly to the headphone bypassing its connectors) :) I'm amazed how true to life they sound, not very different from our also great Iloud MTM's. One advantage of using headphones worth mentioning: if you have damaged hearing in one ear (or otherwise different ears), you can individually EQ L and R to compensate for this. E.g. using Fabfilter Pro EQ3. It won't work well with speakers since you lack the absolute L and R separation here.

Since three weeks I own the DT 880 and I really love them. I have the "not so beloved" 32 ohm version because most of the time I listening on my laptop and I don´t want an amplifier. Compare to my old AKG K240 mk2 they are clearly another level. Here in Germany the cost of the Sennheiser is twice the price of the DT 880. Also I prefer semi open headphones. With 300 ohms the Sennheiser was not an option for me and my "equipment" ;-). It´s a matter of what I need and what I´m willing to pay. Mostly I hear film music(Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard) and classical music and they really sound wonderful in my 57 year old ears ;-)

In my experience Beyerdynamic and the DT800 pro has been quite bad. After two years, the left side stop working. I tried to contact Beyerdynamic several times, asking to indicate where to send them for repairs, they don’t respond. They refer you to a from online that doesn’t work, and that’s it. After that, they just ignore you. After doing some research online, I found that many people are also experiencing bad support from Beyerdynamic. Now, they advertise these headphones as “repairable” but in reality they would not respond to a request for support, would not provide parts or at least, indicate where to source the parts. Once your DT 880s are broken they are as good as trash.

The Sennheiser HD580 precision is also a great choice. I'm using one for over 20 years. It's comparable to the HD600. Amazon sells nice earcap and cable replacements. For composing, monitoring or mastering, these Sennheisers are great. I've also tried an open, very high-end & expensive magnetostatic headphone. While it provided a pleasant more "speaker" like listening experience, and more prominent bass, it was no match for the Sennheiser in the highest frequency range. Greetings from Sweden, stay well!

Yes but the cables often die and it's not that cheap to replace them so often. Plus they're more expensive overall

@@tac2456 Correct. What I did was to bypass the little 'connectors' on the headphone and solder the L and R cables directly to the headphone connector. This works well and bypasses the arguably weakest spot of them.

Hi :), with the scarlett u cant power any of them properly. Instead of preamp u should buy some amp with good voltage. Also the biggest difference in the sound between them is (in adittion to the tonality) that the hd650 is smoother/softer sounding and the 880 is slightly sharper sounding with better soundtage/width.

@@matusjurcik6974 I can't use DT880 Pro without Sonarworks reference for any modern music with bass. I am not a bass head, but when mixing without it, everything end up extremely bass heavy. I am also using Neumann KH310 monitors and I know how much bass is missing there. HD650 are so different, you can use them without any EQ and also even they are 300 ohms, they dont so much power as DT880.

Ah, I found out - the DT880 PRO series comes with a coiled cable, you seem to have the DT880 EDITION series which comes with a straight cable. Sound-wise, apparently both models are the same. The only other difference is the headband - the PRO is a tighter fit whereas the EDITION has a softer headband.

DT-880 is a very old product. Beyerdynamic have been producing it since the 80s. There are five (AFAIK) different versions of the DT-880's. Only one of them has a coiled cable (a coiled cable replacement is available on the BD website), iirc. They all sound different, too. There are other videos on YT comparing all of the versions of the DT-880 (here's one: /watch?v=v4FpTCPxdFg)

i had many sennheiser over the years and i love them. I found that Beyers or AKG ( like the k712) are a better representation to what I listen to, while the sennheiser seem to 'nicen' it up. So sennheiser make you feel better but are less honest. ( .. and AKGs are Austrian, ... ;),
