These two headphones often get recommended for a lot of people looking for a headphone upgrade. But it can be really hard to decide between them, especially when both have avid fans vouching for them. Since I've owned both for some time now, here's how to choose between the Audio Technica m50x and the Beyerdynamic DT 770.

Good advice Andrew. For me over the years it's been m50x all day long as a VO Pro. I wear reading glasses and wear them for hours no problem, no headaches. Just bought the Austrian Audio Hi-X55 and already regretting it (buyers remorse)...They are def comfortable, but don't live up to the hype for booth work anyway and even music didn't sound great though the AA's. I found myself in this situation of comparison. The video really helped me understand and compare these two models. I am not yet sure of my choice but the Audio-Technica ATH-M50X seems to me better suited to my situation for practical reasons even if the flat sound aspect attracted me at the start of my research. Thank you
@odysseyofcuriosity
@odysseyofcuriosity 3 года назад
Glad the video helped, Christian! If you are attracted by the idea of a flat sound, you can also look towards the ATH-M40. They are often regarded as a slightly cheaper and flatter M50, but otherwise share many features. They could be a good choice for you, as well. Good luck!

@@odysseyofcuriosity Thank you for the follow-up and thanks for this new information. My goal is to come out with a pretty good mix directly from my MPC ONE with a pair of headphone. For now I'm using my old SONY MDR-7505 and I can't export something without remixing it with my studio monitors. I'm doing HipHop and Lofi beats... so do you these ATH-M40 or 50 will be better than my SONY?
@odysseyofcuriosity
@odysseyofcuriosity 3 года назад
Glad I can help! I've never heard the MDR-7505, but if they are anything like the 7506 (which are pretty much a standard in many professional audio settings) they are very decent headphones, so I don't think replacing them with the M40 will solve your mixing issues. In fact, I just uploaded the first part of a series I'll do on mixing on headphones. You might want to check it out, as in this first video I talk about the shortcomings of using headphones vs monitors - maybe that's the source of your issues?

A couple of comments on the BDs. They come in three different input impedances, 32, 80, and 250 ohms. The 250 and 80 are best used with an audio interface or other high-power output and may not be suitable direct from a smartphone or computer. Also, the velour earpieces only come on the 250 and 80. The 32 only comes with vinyl earpieces although you can replace them with aftermarket velour.
@Shai_Kakuja
@Shai_Kakuja 3 года назад
This video was great, I'd narrowed it down to these 2 pairs of headphones after at least 2 weeks of research and review reading/watching and was pretty much set on the Beyerdynamics. I especially appreciate the point you'd made about the glasses as I honestly hadn't even considered that to be a factor. Most of the headphones I've used in the past were for gaming and so were typically made to accommodate even the fattest of heads so I had just assumed that comfort with glasses was a given, especially at the price range. This has really only confirmed that I want the Beyerdynamics, however it is unfortunate that they don't seem to be the most comfortable "wearing around" headphones. I was hoping they wouldn't be too annoying when wearing them around my neck, although you brought up a good point about the lack of swivel. Regardless I do want them as everything I've seen leads me to believe they have the superior sound, and I want something that will work some magic when I plug it into my new DAC. Hopefully I'll get used to wearing them around my neck, or maybe find a way to mod them and increase the swivel. Thank you for making this easy to understand and concise video. Earned a sub, and I wish you all the best in these trying times and in the future.

@RobDaHood
@RobDaHood 3 года назад
I used the ATH-M50x's for over 3 years now, one of the best headphones I've ever had. The only 2 problems I had was the ear cushions and headband are made of a material that will flake off and peel relatively easily, and that they tend to become uncomfortable after long sessions. I'm only replacing them because a plastic piece broke off and they no longer sit on my ear correctly. While I would still recommend them, I am going to give the dt770's a try.

I have both and the DT770 are way more comfortable and less fatiguing while gaming. I have to turn the volume down as they strain my ears more with the M50X. I usually game with SHP9500 as I can wear those all day. Just bought the DT770 Pro 80ohm for $30 and they feel similar in comfort to the SHP9500. My ears don't hurt like the M50X or M40X while gaming. It's not the pad comfort but the highs are simply too bright and start to hurt my ears and turn them down.

I've got the DT770 Pro 80ohm, running them for about a week now and I've been more than happy with the quality of sound and the headphones themselves! The 3m cable is... Its certainly something. I've kept it bundled up as it came out of the box, and I've just started wearing around a bumbag to put both my phone and the cable in 🤣 most likely a portable amp as well when I get one. But as someone who's come from using £30 KitSounds for the last 7 years... I'm overjoyed regardless

They definitely make you work if you want to take them with you on the road, but the sound quality and comfort are worth it. I also carry my DT770 in my backpack daily, and it's not that bad (yet I have the coiled, shorter cable with the 250 ohm version). If you don't really need the extra length, making it shorter and soldering a jack isn't very complicated, so look into that for the future. Anyway, enjoy your headphones!

As a pure listener I prefer the AT’s. (I listen to an eclectic mix of Tool, Billy Eilish and Piazzolla.) I wear wireframe glasses and have no problems with the comfort. I do find the AT’s a tad warm on my ears, but the overall difference in the sound (more ‘warm’ than ‘flat’, more ‘alive’ than ‘technical’) makes it worth it to me. The soundscape is less ‘wide’ but to me expansive enough, it’s not like the music is from a tiny box like with classic British loudspeakers. So I’m happy.
@odysseyofcuriosity

@19BennJ83
@19BennJ83 3 года назад
Hi Andrew I would probably most of the time use it at home (outside would be a nice extra) connected to my mobile and maybe also sometimes to my playstation 4 (but connected to the playstation 4 is not the most important cause I got a other playstation headset for that) I have a budget not higher than 200/300 euro I have seen a Bose Quietcomfort 35 II for 200 euros a Sony WH1000xm3 for 230 euro and also a JBL Live 650btnc for 107 euro but other tips are more than welcome with cable would also be good cause I think it got better sound quality what's kinda important thank you for your message 🙂
@odysseyofcuriosity
@odysseyofcuriosity 3 года назад
@@19BennJ83 Between the ones you listed, if possible, I would go with the Sony WH1000xm3, as I feel that for that price range, they have the best set of features/sound quality/ANC. They are mainly wireless (you seem to care about this since all your other choices are Bluetooth enabled) but can, of course, be used with the included wire if you need to. They are quite comfortable (as are the Bose - can't really comment on the JBL though as I didn't spend a lot of time with them), they can be worn for long 12 hour flights no problem, and the ANC is probably the best (Bose comes close, but Sony takes the edge imho). Battery life is also really good. The microphone is ok for phone calls, but not for gaming. One thing that I feel you should know about is build quality - if abused, tossed around, the head band tends to crack/break where it meats the ear cup - a defect that was here since the first edition. So if you are a bit clumsy/not careful with them, maybe you should look towards something more sturdy - like the m50x (they are studio/DJ headphones made to take a beating) that I'm talking about in this video. They are cheaper if you go wired (and there is a bluetooth adapter for them that you can get later) or you can go directly to their more recent bluetooth version - the m50xBT. Their sound quality will be great of course, but they lack the ANC (that's really useful if you travel/commute a lot).

You will enjoy your DT770 for sure! As for the 80 ohms version, I don't own it and I haven't used it recently so I can't comment from experience. I'll for sure make a video about the DT 990 in the near future, but for now I don't think I agree with them being a better choice for someone looking for the two in the title, since comparing them doesn't compare apples to apples. Both are closed, the DT 990s are open-back. With them, what you gain in soundstage you lose in terms of isolation and low end punch. Depending on your intended use, this might be a deal breaker for a lot of people that are looking at the m50x or DT 770. But for anyone looking solely for a gaming set, I'll for sure recommend the DT 990 as the wider soundstage will be a lot more immersive and when gaming, you don't tipically require a lot of isolation since you are at home. What do you think about them, what would make them a much better choice compared with the two in the title?

Platinum XYZ it really depends what I'm doing. If I'm recording, I prefer the M50x. They really block sound out of the microphone well. The design is better if you take them places and I like the removable cable. If I'm mixing, I much prefer the 770pros. They are much more comfortable for long sessions and the brighter top end makes it easier to make detailed mixing decisions, especially if you are older and you have lost some of your sensitivity to high frequencies. However, I also have the 990 pros and if your mixing, then these are by far my favourite! It's almost as good as using speakers.

I'm very young and also try to take care of my hearing so I did find the DT 770s to be quite earpeircing at first but I quickly adjusted and I then realized they were far better than my old cheaper headphones. What I like most is no longer having to move my sub bass up several octaves while working on it just so I can hear it. The bass extension is very nice.

Honestly, I think the DT770 fit your description more compared with the m50s. It's not a night and day difference though, so to better tilt the balance, think about the other features. What matters more to you - comfort or portability? A detachable cable or better pads? As for having no reference when it comes to studio headphones, I think that they will sound "HD" to you, if that makes sense. Not necessarily bass leaning. You'll have bass, but you won't drown in it. You'll have a ton of detail, and you'll probably discover things you never heard in tracks you listened to before. Hope this helps!

Decent review but for gaming my choice would defiantely be the M50s... although you have a fair point to make for the DT770 Pro (bit better positional clarity) the positional audio on the M50 is better than on many "Surround Gamer Headsets" while still delivering booming explosions. I have tried the DT 770 Pro in both 80 and 250 Ohm. Recommended them a few times to happy recipients who prefer listening to music like Jazz or Classical Music. Also tried a few Sennheisers, Sonys, Koss, Bose and Bower Wilkins Headphones just to mention a few that are either a popular choice or really good on their own. Notable mention... the Koss Porta Pros always amaze me as a compact on Ear Headphone. But back to those two legendary Headphones ... i just bought my third pair of M50s ... my second one beeing the BT2 Variant ...which truly sounds like it is indeed wired... if you use LDAC 960kbps. My original pair of M50s was now 14 years old and i have used it at least a few hours every day... at home, on the go ... just always. Why did i replace them for a new pair of M50 (in the M50x Gunmetal variant :))? Because they sound so much more fun... they work for films, also Jazz and Classical Music ... although the sound stage is not nearly as wide as on the DT 770 Pros or the DT990 for that matter and the clarity is also not as defined. But exactly this clarity is for my preferred types of music too much, too airy,... i love that DnB, Techno, Rap and Trap or any type of EDM sounds like you are in the club. Huge Speaker style bass, nothing distorted, nice but tight soundstage that can become quite a bit wider with the proper recording. This btw. also makes them quite useable for fast FPS Shooter Games... positional audio is still decent while explosions sound like real explosions. Airier Headphones or the good sounding but very fragile Steelseries Headsets do not reproduce mids and especially low frequencies quite as punchy but still not overexposed like the M50 do. Back to my final Audio verdict as i drifted over to why i also like to use them for really everything else. I like my audio clean, neutral and undistorted but still dirty, so when the fat baseline hits, it really hits you. So i have the peace in mind that i do not care if i listen to Simon & Garfunkel, Lil John, A$AP Rocky, The Prodigy, John Spencer Blues Explosion, ELO, Justice, Die Antwoord, Dj Shadow, Slipknot, Trampsta, Massive Attack, Dj Fresh, Autechre, Chicago, Schoolboy Q and whatnot... it all just sounds so right. Not only clean but also fun. Mind you the DT 770s will manage to play quite a few of these Artists just fine too,... but take the song Bassline Junkie from Dizzee Rascal ... the bass will not "be buzzin" on the DT 770 Pros ... so that is definately a song that sounds just weird on the DT-770 Pro. John Spencer also sounds in general nicer on the M50s although the DT770 also do a good job but they do create a different experience for the listener. So if you want a "always on" wide soundstage with pristine separation (perfect to dissect every single instrument track) and brilliant treble ... go get the DT 770 Pro´s ... they do feel more comfortable and a bit more premium. But i just cannot quit the M50s ... they sound so much more fun to me and when i need some bangers instead of the 4th coffee... the DT 770 just do not cut it. Comfort was a problem in the end with my 14 year old ones ... but both new ones feel really nice. At the very first day i should have given the Headband a little strech as the fit will hurt after a few hours if you have a rather big head like me. Now a few days in and everything is fine. Quite curious ... the Earpads from the BT2DS Variant are quite noticeable softer and feel really nice throughout a 10 hours office day (Mic is really really good for Teams and i can dual pair my phone and notebook with seamless handshake between them). Still the M50 Earpads will be comfortable enough, even for longer sessions as long as they are fresh, be sure to replace them as soon as you feel the inner cup putting pressure on your ears. There are also quite a few high quality after market earcups available for the M50s ... but that sounds like a research of its own which i have been too lazy to do yet.

I have the M50X. Comfort is a MAJOR issue if you have big ears, I don't even think mine are that big, and they still annoy me. I only used them because of the money I paid. I even tried replacement pads with no major improvements. Soundwise, they never managed to impress me, they are fine, I was expecting way more. I think the hype and popularity just make the expectations too high. There is no imaging or sound stage to speak of, so if you want to play competitive FPS, these are not it. They are fine for single player tittles. I'd highly recommend you to try cheaper alternatives and find the sound you like before paying a lot of money on something you are not sure if you'll like. Koss KSC75 are a great entry level alternative, they could even be your endgame. They have ZERO sub-bass (70 Hz and below), but the rest of the frequencies are on point, good imaging and sound stage and most importantly they cost like $20.

For this purpose, I would pick the DT770 between the two. However, depending on how/where you plan on playing your guitar, I strongly recommend at least checking the tones on some speakers (even consumer ones should be better than nothing) and comparing your patches with the guitar tones on some songs you like. Most of my listening is done via the built in headphone output of a Focusrite 18i20 Gen 1 or a Behringer UMC404HD. Both of these feature a decent headphone amp (nothing stellar though). When compared to the built in Realtek soundcard in your typical motherboard, both headphones sound better on these. So I would say that yes, you do need an amp to get the most of them, especially the DT770. As some users have reported in this comment section, you could run into bass distortion issues with them when using certain sources (I'm currently planning on investigating this, since I didn't run into this problem before with my setups). The m50x tend to play nicer with weaker headphone outputs, but will also sound better with a decent amp in my experience.

Hey Rosa! Glad you enjoyed the video! It's hard for me to say for sure, since I haven't tried any Alesis mixer so far. Chances are high you will be ok, though. I am curious though, is there a specific reason why you are going interface to mixer, and not driving your monitors/headphones straight from the interface?
@graciasalaconsciencia
@graciasalaconsciencia 3 года назад
@@odysseyofcuriosity The reason is that my interface through the headphone output does not give enough power, currently I have akgk99 but when connecting directly to the interface the volume is low, however directly to the interface I hear better sound quality, when I connect to Alesis it feels A little distortion but I gain in volume, now the question is that I want to decide on the best headphone to mix bass (low end), and the rest I will make the decisions with my small eris 3.5 monitors, in case I require an amplifier which I do you recommend? And on the other hand, with which headphone can I better mix the bass 770pro 990pro or m50x?
@odysseyofcuriosity
@odysseyofcuriosity 3 года назад
@@graciasalaconsciencia For mixing I would definitely go with the 770s. As for an amp, it depends on how you intend to connect it. I would choose between a FiiO E10K and a Schiit Magni 3 (depending on where you are) - both are very decently priced and should handle the DT770 250 ohm fine. The FiiO is a DAC that connects to your computer via USB - essentially bypassing your interface. It also has a line out port, so you could plug your monitors into that - but if you do any recording you'll have to switch back to your Presonus interface. The Schiit Magni 3 avoids this hassle, as it can be connected to the line outputs of your interface (it doesn't have a DAC). Your Eris monitors would then connect to it, so it would be a little more elegant. So take a look and see what's available around where you are - if you can find a Magni 3 at a good price - then go for it. If not, look for the FiiO E10K.

Just make sure to grab the 80 ohm version, so you won't have trouble with getting enough volume from your e-drums (they might have a weak headphone out). Good luck!

What's the difference between the OHM?
@odysseyofcuriosity
@odysseyofcuriosity 3 года назад
In a nutshell, higher ohm -> they will need a more powerful amp to get loud & the frequency response tends to be flatter, while lower ohm will need less volume (so they can be used with a phone, for example) and tends have a bit more bass/highs (a stronger V shaped sound). If you have a decent sound card/decent phone it should be enough to drive the DT770 250 ohm for example, so if you want a flatter sound I would go for these. Good luck!

which ones do you think are better for playing the digital piano?
@odysseyofcuriosity
@odysseyofcuriosity 3 года назад
I would go with the DT770 80 ohm, so you get great comfort and noise isolation and don't run into trouble with volume. The cable might be a little bit in your way, but depending on where the headphone out jack is positioned on the piano you could get an extension cable. Good luck!

@@odysseyofcuriosity does the 80ohm and 32ohm have the same spring cable? the piano i have has the headphone jack on its back and doesnt support high impedance headphones. i am thinking to buy the 32ohm version so i dont have problems with the cable nor the volume
@odysseyofcuriosity
@odysseyofcuriosity 3 года назад
Actually I was wrong. Both the 80 ohm and the 32 ohm have straight cables, so you should be fine. But yes, since the output of your piano doesn't support high impedance headphones, go with the DT770 32 ohms.

I recently purchased a new headset (ATH-M50xBT) and noticed that it has a p65 (Proposition 65 Cancer and Reproductive harm) warning on the back of the box. I looked at several other Audio Technica headsets and many of them seemed to carry this warning. Is anyone familiar with this warning or why it would be listed on so many of the AT products? Should I send mine back? I got it at B&H. This warning label is located in the back of the box. Also did your box come with a plastic cover for the headphone box? Mine didn’t! Just a box

In my case (older ATH-m50x) there is no such warning on the back of the box. Maybe someone else knows what changed meanwhile. Sorry I couldn't help!

Which is better for a digital piano? Thanks
@odysseyofcuriosity
@odysseyofcuriosity 7 месяцев назад
I would say comfort is very important when playing the piano. You want to focus on your practice/playing without being distracted by your ears hurting. So I would choose the DT770 as they are a lot more comfortable. However, look for a lower impedance version - either 80 ohm or even 32 ohm. Digital pianos might not have the most powerful headphone out, and you want to be able to still hear even softly played notes. Hope this helps!
