In this video, as you requested, we will share a direct comparison between the HeadRush MX 5 and the LINE 6 POD GO. First of all we will hear the units in action with a demo song, then we will compare the features and technical characteristics of the 2 units with a very detailed comparison chart, then we will ear more sounds, also comparing the 2 units with a real tube amp checking out the frequency response, the dynamic range management and the note envelop, and finally I will give you my 2 cents. So I hope you enjoy, and please subscribe and hit the bell, as it’s gonna really help me to make more videos like this!!!

Love your videos. After owning an MX5 for a few weeks now I am getting some great presets (rigs) worked up, both clean and distorted. It's bone simple to use and its dual amp and cab capabilitys (for me) trumped all the other features of the Pod Go. I hope that Headrush will support this product in the future with updates ... a few more pedals, amps and cabs would be really nice. We'll see.

Thanks for the apples to apples comparisons. What I got out of it is find the unit that fits your use case best. Ease of use is key here, and again that depends on use case. That you are comparing a sub $500 / 500 Euro units to one amp that costs 3x what these units do is testament to how good they have become, particularly in the sense of how they sound in a recording or a live mix.

What an amazing demo video. Great format. I really enjoyed it and your playing is AMAZING! Keep up the good work.... I have the Helix but wanted something smaller for quick grab and go so I got the HX Stomp. I quickly found I missed the pedal. So I think I'll give the MX 5 a try. Price is good and it sounds great. I wish the Helix was touch screen. I personally NEVER use HX Edit on the computer to create or edit tones. That's why your video is so great, you cover all +/- for each. Thank You!

Adoro i tuoi video, perchè fornisci tutte le informazioni necessarie senza essere mai prolisso, con una chiarezza disarmante. Questa volta, con la comparativa del suono "a tre" ci hai messo a disposizione una vera chicca. Inarrivabile, Complimenti. Venendo agli oggetti in prova, entrambi disturbano i miei sonni. essendo macchine del taglio che ritengo adatto a me. Da un lato la signal chain più articolata, dall'altro gli otto pulsanti, caratteristica difficilmente rinunciabile. Come suono mi sembrano equivalenti. Buona musica forever!

Great comparison of the 2. I have had the Pod GO for a few months now and I love that it has so many buttons and the app is good for me. The clean amp sounds are great in it too. They all sound pretty good these days so it comes down to interface and usability and for me the Pod GO checks off all the boxes.

@@LeoGibsonGtr hi Leo, need your help, what guitar processor would you recommend for live perfomaces, we don’t need an expression pedal or any external devices, it’s hard to choose between: Mooer ge 300 lite Mooer ge 250 Line6 Pod Go Line6 hx stomp Headrush gigboard Hotone ampero (as well i know, it’s possible to connect to this one extra-switches)

Hi, this is quite a complex question and these units are pretty different each from the other. I would try to verify: - how much money do you want to spend? - which are the connections you need? Do you need XLR out? TRS jacks? or just unbalanced? - do you need stereo fx loop? - do you need to run the modeler with the 4 cable method with your amp? - can you use an external midi controller? - how complex has to be the effect signal chain? do you need parallel effects? - is there a specific amp that you absolutely need? Thank you for your message!
@hellodayband
@hellodayband 2 года назад
@@LeoGibsonGtr Hi Leo, Thank you for your message: i’m looking for something till 500$ -550$ +/- I’m going to run directly in PA system/mixing console. I don’t need stereo fx loop I don’t need 4 cables method Not sure about external midi controller. Don’t need parallel effects, only tuner and guitar processor. No, there not a specific amps that we need.
@LeoGibsonGtr
@LeoGibsonGtr 2 года назад
In your use case I would say that you need balanced out to be able to run long cable to the mixing desk, the complexity of the effects chain is not and issue and you need as many footswitches as possible for live use without an external midi controller...therefore maybe the POD GO (8 footswitches) or the Mooer GE 250 (or 300 with 10 footswitches if you get a good deal) could be the right units....Of course I'm not putting the sound into the equation, as I think it depends on your taste and preferences. Thank you for your message!

Great jams, insights, and feature comparisons as usual! This video certainly goes a long way to inform anyone looking into these multi-effects units. However, one thing I would like to know more about with these products are the specifics of the effects. This is a huge aspect of these products, but it seems every reviewer skims over it as an afterthought. As an effects fanatic, my choice will weigh heavily on what effects are available, what pedals are they're modeled after, what parameters are available for the user to tweak, and what they sound like. Right now, the only way I can get that information is by finding one in-store and testing it myself, which is rarely an option where I live.
@LeoGibsonGtr
@LeoGibsonGtr 2 года назад
Hi Cameron, thank you I'm happy you have appreciated the features comparison! As regards effects, actually I think that it is a difficult matter, as we don't have a real reference as we have with amps. I mean with amps we have the real deal, the modeled tube amp, but with effects? which is the reference for a chorus or a reverb? The risk is to introduce a lot of biased opinions. I have done some video dedicated to effects comparisons, like this one: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5aQGDISCqkI.html Finally it ended up to last more than 20 minutes without really conclusive points... Nevertheless I will think if I'm able to find a way to give you more info... Thank you for your message!
@cameronmoore7675
@cameronmoore7675 2 года назад
@@LeoGibsonGtr Thanks for the response! To clarify, what I'm looking for isn't a comparison between the onboard effects and the pedals they're modeled after. What I'd like is just a small sound demo for most effects along with information on what effects are available, what parameters are adjustable by the user, and, if apparent, what type of pedal they're based on. For example, I can see from the MX5 screen that it has an "orange phaser" most likely based on an MXR Phase 90. That would be a useful tidbit of info to make clear. If there's chorus available, is it mono/stereo, does it seem to be based on a CE-1 versus a CH-1? What kind of delays does it have; i.e. digital, analog, etc. What kind of reverbs; Spring, plate, hall, mod, etc. For overdrive, what kinds are available, such as a Tube Screamer, Blues Breaker, etc. I know this is asking for a lot when some of these units have literally hundreds of effects, and your reviews are already wonderfully comprehensive. It is worth noting that this information is _very_ hard to come by, though. Even just a simple video dedicated to showing a unit's list of effects with simple, short sound demos for each one would be immensely useful. Again, it's not about how each effect compares to original hardware; it's about knowing what sounds I can get out of a unit. As an example, this simple (but long) video helped me to figure out what sounds I could get out of the Boss MD-500, and was a deciding factor on me investing in getting one for myself: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BHabXUBckVg.html Anyway, just some food for thought. Thanks again for your fantastic videos and response. Cheers, Leo! Keep up the great work!

But honestly, now hearing it head to head with what I already own, I think I will tweak what I have. I really do not think the MX5 quite made it to the 800 tone like your tweaks got the Pod Go to, and I really have no need for the parallel signal chain to get the classis rock, smooth jazz, and modern country tones that I use. GREAT detailed tones, BTW. I don't care what the other tubers say, I think ur alright... Lol... just kidding... thanks again!! Dave

Hi Leo, your videos are always better and the demo songs are always beautiful !!! I put the Mooer Ge300 Lite on sale after making some comparisons with the mx5 even using tone capture you can get close to the tone but in my opinion the biggest difference is on the organicity of the Headrush sounds and on the dynamics for me it is a lot more natural than the Mooer right under the fingers, then maybe it's just an exaggerated impression of me as a "new toy"! It would be interesting to have your opinion on this factor, your subjective feelings "under your fingers" !! Anyway you are great, keep it up ...

@LeoGibsonGtr 2 года назад
Thank you Simone, really super appreciated!!! I've not done yet a direct comparison between the Mooer and the MX 5...so a video comparison could be a good idea....we will see....I have another comparison that is "working progress" but then I would like to do something else...as regards the feel under your fingers it is a pretty subjective matter and I'm afraid to introduce biasing talking about that...I try to substitute it with the dynamic range test and the note envelop test that are in this video ...nevertheless it Is for sure an interesting topic! The pod go has in reality 256 saving slots, 128 user 128 factory (which can be overwritten). And then, each one of those has 4 snapshots you can use to alter the base preset, so maybe one could argue that it provides with 1024 slots?

I planned to replace my Pod GO with the MX5 for the extra DSP and ease of use. While the MX5 is nice, I am keeping the Pod GO and sending the MX5 back. The lack of PC Editor is the deal breaker. However, even tweaking on the unit itself without a PC it is much easier on the Pod GO than MX5 for me. I found the small touch screen on MX5 difficult to use, and more difficult to "test" each pedal without having to go back through the whole menu to switch it to something else. (Pod lets you simply turn a dial to try the next pedal). I sometimes touched the wrong thing on the screen, and found it difficult to read the EQ settings, especially since they go left,right, down, left right, where the EQ settings can be read left to right on the Pod GO. Also, I did not find it convenient to load 3rd party presets to the MX5. You must mount the device as a drive, drag the files over, unmount the drive, then sync the folder. That's not good for quickly testing things from the tone cloud. On Pod, you just drop it in the editor and it loads straight into the unit. I will so though, that the MX5 has a MUCH better looper. Also the "presets" within each pedal of the MX5 makes it much easier to use, compared to Pod GO if you are unfamiliar with how to do it (myself included). This makes me not use certain effects on Pod. If you do need the extra DSP power and flexability of adding lots of effects, dual amps/cabs, the MX5 is a fantastic bargain. I also found the stock presets better on the MX5. I run out of DSP quite often on the Pod GO. But the PC editor makes it worth keeping that device for me.

Hi, thank you so much for sharing your opinions and experience...and I agree with you...the computer app is very important also for me...and your conclusions are really similar to the ones I did in my demo review video of the MX5....Let's hope that HeadRush listen to us and build up a computer app....even if I'm skeptical as the Pedalboard and Gigboard are out in the market since many years and no computer app is available.... You make a good point: I think the laptop editor versus the touch screen is the fundamental difference here. Personally, my MX5 touchscreen is an absolute game changer: easiest user interface I've experienced in music gear over 40 years. I find it so fast to get into patches/'rigs' and get to the sound I want. I'm just not that guy that wants to hook up his laptop every time he needs some serious editing, but I do respect those who do. As you noted you can connect the MX5 to Mac or PC and it shows up as a drive on the desktop. This way you can save down everything that's on the MX5, or load up 3rd party IRs. I would be very surprised if HeadRush doesn't come out with an editor at some point as the connectivity's already in place.

Great demo song and great video as usual Leo! I thought my POD Go was small when upgrading from the FIrehawk FX, but man is that MX5 SMALL! HeadRush makes a very compelling and good sounding product. I think Line 6 missed the boat on not including some of the same features on the Firehawk FX on the POD Go (XLR outputs and Bluetooth and phone app to run the pedalboard). I still like my POD Go and I think your sound samples showed it sounded more like the real amp (to my ears) than the HeadRush, but less so once you tweaked. All sounded great in a mix. I'm going to have to buy your IR to try on my POD Go. Fantastic comparison once again Leo! Your video as well as Henning Pauley's series on the POD Go influenced me buying my POD Go vs the MG30. I think HeadRush may have shot themselves in the foot as why would anyone buy the full fat GigBoard instead of the MX5 for less than 1/2 the price? God bless and rock on!

@@LeoGibsonGtr I did notice that, particularly with amps like the Plexi. I'm starting to get decent results by blending to amps together with the split signal path, which the Pod Go doesn't have anyway. I also got a pretty cool tone blending a JCM with an acoustic simulator. I'm still on the fence about exchanging the MX5 for a Pod Go. Good point about the editor on the computer. Sitting on the ground tweaking the effects on the tiny touchscreen is clearly not something my aging body really enjoyed! Not sure with the Pod Go, but I've felt that the bass/mid/treble on the Headrush don't change the amp sound THAT much. would like to see or hear your view on the mx5 vs the fm9 on basis of tones/effects alone. While i realize one in usa is 1600.00 and the other 399.99 and the fractal has hundreds more amps and effects and control i just wonder if the fm9 is 4-5x the unit tone/effect wise. I mean most people use like no more then 10 good amp tones if even that and effects some dont use many but a basic rvb/delay/overdrive and ambient guitar is of course going to use more effects but i am on the fence between the fm9 and mx5. My needs are small: headphone playing and 4 cable method as well as some recording but i just wonder if whats on the mx5 can male me happy? I know the amount of content on the fm9 can likely make anyone happy in amps and effects but how "bad" is the mx5 tone wise in comparison. I can afford either.

I think this one, as you say, really comes down to usecase. For me I bought the Headrush MX5 when it came out as I was just about to buy a used POD Go (would have been comparable in price). I enjoy editing directly on the MX5, and I like the compact form factor but still having an expression pedal. And the more flexible signal chain is something I also really enjoy as a person who likes to tinker with things. I think the MX5 probably wins in terms of stereo effects capabilities also, due to the flexible signal chain, and many people seem to feel the headrush products have the better stereo delays and reverbs to begin with. I don't have any experience with the helix products so I don't know that for certain. Both seem like awesome products well worth the asking price.

Great playing great review, but as an owner of the MX5 for nearly 6 months I hate it. Every bleedin amp on this thing sound cak. I had my 1st gig, a wedding, with the MX5 and it sounded atrocious as it has done since I bought it 3 months ago, it was embarrassing. I have never had a worse sound in 20 years of playing live, and that's saying something considering the advancements since then, I used to use the POD original and it had a fab clean sound and a creamy overdrive with sustain for miles. What really bugs me is I bought the MX5 so as to avoid bringing an amp and halfway through the gig I ended up bypassing the MX5 completely and going with the AMP's perfect, clean, crunch and overdrive, the MX5 became just a very expensive tuner. I mean, I don't know or care what a "matchless" with a specific mic sounds like, I just want 3 sounds and to be able to duplicate and add modulation to them for different songs, but I don't want a mess of cables etc. Headrush really need to overhaul the MX5 completely there are too many options that they've completely overlooked the basic sounds most guitarist need. The layout is confusing so if you accidentally press the wrong combination of buttons with your feet, you're like "where the F am I??? " Live ! sounds or direction you have pressed are not clearly defined line6 tones have always been so easy and fast to dial in from scratch compared to the Headrush interface. The MX5 for me is a grave disappointment and money down the drain, I will be getting rid of it asap.

13:04 - The test of response is very revealing! MX5 is substantially less gainy - even with gain at 90% it is nowhere near the gain level of the real amp at noon (50%). POD GO is closer to the real amp (but also still slightly less gain). The real amp has A LOT more dynamics than either and the structure of the grain (distortion harmonics) is more varied, vibrant and dynamic. For headrush MX5, this is a deal breaker because the key feature - modelling - is a failure. MX5 does not fairly represent the amp it models. Perhaps, the playing field could be leveled by using a clean boost in front of the preamp on MX5 to compensate for the lack of gain.
