I consider myself Spanish at time although my family is from El Salvador.. i do this because my last name is from Spain and most of my ancestors on both of my parent side are from Europe. It wouldn't be wrong because i technically share "Spaniard heritage" , like many Latinos do. Latinos - most- are mixed with native and Europeans background.. so for Latinos.. so it depends on your heritage i suppose.I know its not politically correct, so i say my family is from latin america. I am not American, so i can't speak entirely for them ... however In the US, saying that you are spanish means that you speak spanish. So, in some way it is correct.. it doesn't matter to them where you are from.. as long as its some form of Spanish to them.. you are Spanish. Yes, it generalizing people..:/ i have a friend who was born in Nigeria and spoke Portuguese.. she was considered Portuguese as a result even though she is not from portugal. It kinda like that for them.
