Headshot Photography Gear for traveling is a tough one, right? Lots to choose from! In this. the first of three videos, I am going to break down the bags I use for traveling with my headshot photography equipment and why. All the gear I travel with for BIG headshot jobs has to fit in these three bags, so I have chosen carefully.

What gear bags do you use and love? Let me know in the comments and I will check them out!

About to buy bags all your suggested bags but have 3 questions: I saw you use the 40" V2 instead of the 50" Think Tank bag? Why? (only like a $40 difference in price) wondering if Luggage handling costs change or that Oversized baggage difference only? Also, why not a hard case 40" version like Condition 1 case Versus that same Think Tank 40 v2?

@GaryHughesOfficial 6 месяцев назад
All great questions. Like I said in the video, the 40 V2 is 40" (42 with the plastic feet). Most of the time it is loaded with all the other bags and comes out on the regular carousel. The 50" would almost certainly be separated into oversized baggage every time. That's just an extra step at most airports and could possibly make the bag more expensive to fly with. I also think that if you have a bigger bag, you'll fill it. That means heavier and more expensive. The 40 is just right. Although it is challenging to find only gear that fits in it, the result is a VERY light kit that is pretty easy to drag around. With my gear in it, it usually weighs about 65 lbs. As far as the hard-shell case, it would definitely have advantages, but the rigidity means that they actually hold less gear than a soft bag of the same size. No flexibility at all when you need to cram in that one last item you forgot. Hope that helps!

Just want to make it as easy on myself as possible. Traveling with gear can be a pain, especially without a CARNET!

Good stuff! I've had the Think Tank 30 for several years, but it's just a bit too short for stands. The new 40 is on my list!

Great question. This really depends on the job. Most of the time I am using the Westcott X-Drop Pro. It actually fits really nicely with everything else in the grip bag. As a bonus, you can use the fabric as a wrap for anything that might be more fragile in the bag.

For the last couple of years I've used a Pelican 1740 for stands/grip and a Thinktank Airport roller for cameras. Oh, and a backpack for my MBP and iPad. Now I leave one set in Dallas and keep another set for travel -- similar versions by Condition 1.

I have the stand manager and a separate grip case and a pelican storm case for lighting. would love to combine it all. and the 40 v 2.0 looks great. but @ 65 lbs are you having to cover over weight costs. Heading up to Portland Thursday and will be trying out Headshot tools for the first time. if need be im fairly close to ThinkTank and can run over tomorrow and pick up a studio manager.

I have an ASMP membership that provides me with a media badge. Most airlines give you a better rate when checking media. Mostly you just don’t have to pay overweight fees :)

I've had issues with the Pelican case. The case itself is great, well built, holds a ton of stuff, and easy to secure. But it's always the first type of case that gate agents seem to be looking for when "Checking Bags at the Gate". Without fail, moments before boarding they'll come around and tell me I have to check it. I've had similar issues when a plane ends up being smaller than anticipated at say a regional airport. The overhead is too small for the Pelican case and I have to gate check it. It's happened enough times that I switched to a Think Tank Shape Shifter for camera gear/computer/ipad/etc. I've never had an issue with a backpack getting selected for gate check. If you do use the pelican case, one tip I did get from airport staff is to zip tie it shut, or use a lock. It was explained to me that while rare, it is possible for the locking mechanism to get hit and the case opens, spilling its contents onto the tarmac. I have no personal experience with that, but I do now zip tie it shut if it leaves my hands.
@GaryHughesOfficial
@GaryHughesOfficial 7 месяцев назад
I haven’t had that experience myself, I’ve never had any issue with it. I usually arrive very early and will always be happy to pay to get a better boarding group so they have space. I also put about 15 big batteries in it and let them know it’s full of batteries. They won’t usually make me check it then :)

Want another? I have a credit card with the airlines that I fly the most. This helps a TON. For example: with Southwest, you can upgrade your boarding position for free 4 times a year if you have a credit card with them. Being in group A pretty much guarantees that you always have a spot for your bag :)

Isn't the pelican carry on case itself very heavy? Loaded up, with camera gear I'm afraid it will exceed the weight limit.
@GaryHughesOfficial
@GaryHughesOfficial 7 месяцев назад
There is a lighter version called the 1535 Air that’s the same size just weights a good bit less. Might be worth looking at :) only once on a connecting flight in Germany was it ever weighed. Since then I keep my equipment to the very minimum for the job in shooting just in case.

What strobe heads do you use and do you put them in the Peli case or the think tank 40?
@GaryHughesOfficial

When I fly I take four Flashpoint EVOLV 200 strobes. I pack the strobes in the Think Tank and the batteries in the Pelican :)
