Healing 448E 1938 Restore and Bluetooth Part 2

A friend asked me to restore his 1938 Healing radio and he want's to play it in his store. He has done a beautiful job on the cabinet and he wants the radio chassis to look original. He also wants to play music from the radio via Bluetooth. I build a bespoke Bluetooth module with the help of a gentleman from a very popular radio channel. It's a new idea but will it work?

I’ve always wanted a medal. Thanks Dave. I’ve also learnt something new: how to rename the modules.😊 Great video, as usual. I’ve also noticed the views from Down Under have gone up quite a bit since you and Don mentioned my channel. I’m thinking of adjusting my accent a little to accommodate that, but I can’t do anything about my name. As I said, it’s been pronounced in so many ways, and your version really takes me back to my days in SA 😊

A well deserved medal Manuel. Module renaming makes for a professional touch particularly if you have a number of modules with the same name and don't adjust your accent, it reminds me of cricketer Tony Greig. That's great if you are getting extra subs from down here. Thanks Manuel 🙂

Hi Maarten, I used a CSR chip SPI, I don't know which chip is used on the MH-M28 and I don't know if it will work with other chips. There are generic SPIs which may work 🤔

I really like 👍 the glow of that dial at night. At least, turning off the lights simulates night. This radio sounds like 👍 a “Hallow’s Eve”, and an air raid siren 🚨 as you’re working on the dial. I see that this is part two of the Healing ❤️‍🩹 radio 📻. Your friend, Jeff.

Hello Mr.Tipton. It's 12:30 am here again in the evergreen state of Washington. I was about to shut down and tuck myself in for the night with my furry little girl when your 2nd video popped up. Great outcome as always! I'm waiting on a radio from eBay. That I won a bid on. It's an "Aria" manufactured by Delco, or Sentinel may be others. Having a hard time locating schematics for my particular model. So I might have to wing it and hope it wasn't molested by other enthusiasts? Hope to see you soon bringing another tube radio to its former glory. "CHEERS MATE"!

I am impressed with the amplifier for the Bluetooth addition. It’s an asset, especially if I am up in the wood yard, needing extra volume for State of Origin scores, if I missed the night game on TV. 🏈 I reckon those large speakers in the Loewe Opta radios, can handle it. 😉 Overall it all looked really spick & span, ready for the Xmas display & it had the core work done by a gentleman & a clever technician. Thanks again David & co. 🙋‍♂️😁

But you have made it so neat and kind to the radio, it won't interfere with the radio. it's not a bodge job and it sounds fine :-D Maybe i just don't like the way people bodge the pcb in (very crude) :-( For some reason when you were drilling, my mind jumped back to my school metalwork class. The solid cast heavy pillar drill was such a handy tool, just put the victim in the clamp and away you go lol. Odd how memorys from millions of years ago re-appear. Sorry woffle mode :-(

Thanks David really enjoy your work and techniques. Your dry humor is great. On the Blue tooth I have done a couple of these but I use a small micro switch mounted next to the tuning gang. When the gang is fully opened it pushes the arm of the switch and changes over to Blue tooth. This enables changeover to Blue tooth from original control. Regards Andy

Hi Dave, just a note, I am out of hospital now, in fact I had the staples removed where the Dr. reached into my belly and pulled my right kidney out because it was full of cancer. It appears they got it all, even though it had gone stage 2, it stopped in the artery leading to the Kidney but went just an inch or so. That was cut out as well and half my adrenal gland was removed. I am doing great and the doc recommended just watching instead of drugs to insure the killing of all the cancer. I wen't with that.

Excellent for a ("just to get it working") restoration, as usual! The owner I'm sure is ecstatic with his now newified antique radio. The results, both your chassis work and his case work, is sure a beautiful radio! You reminded me of a tip I saw recently on another YT channel. When using a hole saw to saw through perspex it helps to spray water onto the bit as it cuts. You'll avoid a lot of the crusty melted mess that usually results when drilling (sawing) through the stuff dry. Don't know if that will work in future restorations but it might be worth a try.

Hi Ron, thank you. The plastic sheet I used is acrylic, I don't know what plexiglass is made from, I think it's perspex. What I used was just ordinary acrylic and it routed very well, I used a small diameter bit it get maximum cutting from maximum revs and it cut really well, I could have sanded the cut to smooth it but it was OK. I use it to mould dial 'glass' as well. Thanks Ron 🙂

Absolutely brilliant David! I’ve heard of the brand name ‘Heeling’ but I’ve not as yet seen one of their radios in the flesh - so to speak LOL! I don’t know whether I have gotten this totally right but since watching your radio restoration videos, and radio restoration vids uploaded by a fellow from New Zealand, it appears Australian and New Zealand vintage radios took, or had various design, and component elements similar to those in the the USA, and UK? British, American, and Canadian radios, despite there being maims voltage and Htz differences, were similar in a large number of respects when compared to Continental European radios. What are your observances in this respect my friend? I like the blue tooth addition: it not only works well, it has given that radio a definite new lease of life. As I say, absolutely brilliant! Best regards from Phil.

Good evening Phil, thank you. Healing was a well known radio manufacturer here, not the biggest but I have a number of Healing sets here. I think you are right Phil, although Australian manufactures were independent they took styling ideas from other countries, this 'telephone' radio being a prime example and if you are going to build a basic MW and SW radio they are going to be similar looking regards design, a bit like cars, much the same layout but cosmetically different. Didn't the Bluetooth work well, I was very pleased with it, thanks to Manual for the board design. Thanks again Phil, take care 🙂

@DavidTipton101
@DavidTipton101 2 года назад
Hi Mike, they rarely do match, you have to work around them. I sometimes get schematics from a similar model either side of the one I am working on from the same manufacturer of course. Manufactures often stay with the same design and the small changes made during production may show up in earlier or later model schematics. Good luck with your second radio 👍😀

Hi Dave. Love your videos. Just wanted to tell you about an issue I had with my Bluetooth installation. When I turned the radio on in the Bluetooth mode, the connection light would come on briefly and then go out and I could not connect. I could connect when powered by the usb port. I had previously installed a thermistor on the mains to limit the current rush on the filaments at startup. When I put a jumper across the thermistor, the power supply, amplifier and Bluetooth all worked fine. Apparently the reduced voltage at startup would set up a fault. I will just delete the thermistor or turn the unit on in radio mode and switch it to Bluetooth after it has warmed up. Thanks for your informative channel.

Interesting that you've put Manuel's Bluetooth moduel in a little case, I've been using Velcro. They sound pretty good too. Just goes to show these radios were designed pretty well. One problem though, the older design was fairly small, this Bluetooth board is much bigger and is a struggle to fit to smaller mantels. The exterior box might be the go.
@DavidTipton101
@DavidTipton101 2 года назад
Hi Andrew, as this was a console radio the box was a good option, it is a bigger board and I haven't tried it in a smaller radio yet, I thought the board could be attached to the inside of the side or even the underside of the top if it wasn't too hot, it would have to be a bespoke installation for each radio. Thanks Andrew 🙂

I don't know if you have an AM transmitter, usually 100mw output or less, they are great for using with MW only valve radios, I have one I use to listen to an FM station on MW, it also gives future proofing for when eventually AM is switched off which is already under way here in England. I always remember listening to Radio Australia on SW as a child back in the 70s, listening for the waltzing matilda tuning signal so I knew I'd found the station, great times!

Hi Christopher. I have a number of MW transmitters but I don't use them at the moment, I have been thinking about setting one up recently. I used to listen to Radio Australia as well, it was shut down probably 20 years ago to save money, it's now broadcast on local radio as Radio National 😏

I was looking for a hobby in retirement and saw an ad for an old radio so I went for it and with a little help from RU-vid videos I was able to gain enough experience to launch my own channel. For the Bluetooth thingie... yes, I think I've seen other restorers build one in too. And it's nice. What I'd have suggested and preferred would be a separate tuneable low power transmitter box, modulated from the Bluetooth capability (and possibly a standard 3.5 mm jack as alternative input). A lot of these old radios had a stunning AM bandwidth capability, without the narrower bandwidth known in more modern AM radios (perhaps to cut down on static, allowing that most of these will be used with a mere internal antenna). Perhaps for the vintage touch, this transmitter could use a tube or tubes too, with the Bluetooth discreetly out of sight. Maybe something like this could be floated with the radio clubs, to come up with a design to do it. In the USA at least, direct line powered with suitable input isolation wouldn't be out of the question. That's more unwieldy with Aussie power, but you seem to have standard radio transformers there, simplifying the matter.
@DavidTipton101

I've fitted quite a few aux sockets and attached a phone or Bluetooth module and they sound great but I think you are suggesting going through the tuner which I haven't tried 🙂

@@DavidTipton101 yep, that's what I was thinking, at least as a one-off test for acceptable fidelity -- sending it as an AM signal that the radio can tune in.
