I’m not sure how I found this channel, or why it randomly decided to pop up in my recommended videos. I’ve been subscribed for a while now. But I’m extremely happy I did. Hi Graeme, a video solely on dew claws would be interesting 👌 What is their purpose for the cows? At what length do you usually decide to trim? Why don’t you usually include them in the video? For some reason I find them interesting & would like if you’d include them more often 👍
Dewclaws would improve weight distribution on very soft/muddy terrain. Think river banks and swaps. They also give the cow a last chance to catch themselves when stepping a hole. Better to get a twisted or sprained ankle than brake a leg.

It's surprisingly interesting to see people do the things they're really good at, regardless of your own interest or competence in the field. In the last few years I've watched doctors talk about their work, a cow's hoof trimmer, a plumber doing sewage and drain cleaning, metal workers, wood workers, electricians, framers, general contractors, lawyers, and probably quite a lot of other professions that I'm forgetting, and I find them all incredibly satisfying to watch. I think it's because it's basically just regular people talking about the things they're good at, explaining some of the simpler things to us laymen. Like the plumber I mentioned - he talks about what causes the clogs, even though it's the 400th video he'll still point out when he finds a collection of "white mice" (tampons), wet wipes, pads and other things in an everyday household that shouldn't be flushed. And he'll talk about how the soap tree (Australian endemic red ash) will shoot meter long roots up any kind of drain pipe, be it sewer or rain water and completely clog up the entire thing. Always looks like he's cleaning out a chemical plant or something when he's cutting the roots, because the water from the water cutter makes the roots foam up like you wouldn't believe.

I must tell you, I accidentally watched another trimmer the other day and it was awful! He was trimming a Holstein and he was so rough and harsh! That poor cow was bellowing and shaking as he dug into her wound with a hoof knife! Just now I saw a guy trimming on a farm channel I watch and his crush pulled their hind legs straight up high and back! I grew up with my dad in a dairy then the feeder cattle business so I’m not squeamish at all. You are the best and I’m spoiled to watch anyone else!
You had said to keep dew claws trimmed back so they didn't put muck on the feet and start infections, hadn't realized they themselves could have problems. Thanks for the new bit and handle. I got covid in December and since getting over it I've had really bad anxiety. But watching your videos has definitely helped calm it down. The music you use definitely aids in calming my nerves too. 😊❤

Do people really think Craig does nothing? I honestly often wonder how he gets it all done! Lining up cows, organizing things, and assisting you and doing some trimming himself is a lot for one man to do.
I'm fascinated with how much you love cows and how much you do to make their lives better. How do you keep that curved knife thing so sharp, and do you use regular sandpaper discs on the grinder? Thanks for your videos.
You once told us about cow herd instinct - so the cow behind will want to follow the cow in front into the crush as long as Craig's there to guide them and have them lined up. When you're having to see the cow out and go around to the next cow if they weren't so helpful as to load themselves and do that loading yourself it must be a much harder day. I can imagine the cow is all sorts of not down for that because there's no way they're getting into that weird contraption - I've always imagined that in itself must make Craig worth his weight in gold. But congratulations on getting on so well with your hoof trimming, Craig!

I love your videos, I’m Brazilian I don’t understand anything about English so much I wanted subtitles to be able to understand everything you say, it does a great job congratulations.
I don't know about cows, and I don't know about hoof trimming, but I know about blades, and you're absolutely right. The first time using a factory fresh blade can feel off, this is because as we use blades we kind of shape them for the purpose we need them for as we go. A perfectly sharp blade is trickier to use than one that's been dulled slightly, they tend to catch a lot more, but once you work them past that initial threshold they're a lot easier to handle and use.
I'm always amazed by these videos. I grew up in southern Arizona, USA where there are at least 6 cattle ranches with hundreds of head in each ranch. I grew up in high desert where it's very hot and dry. We have farriers to work on the horses but the cattle never had their hooves trimmed, probably because it's dry, rocky, and sandy. They're all angus, brahma, or Texas long horn beef cattle none of which like people very much.
I love the way you cut and trim the co s hoofs. The round on the ends. I watch other people do what you do to their hoofs. But they aren’t round at the bottom like you. I see I compare theirs to yours and I’m a creature of habit and I’m so used to you watching and loving the way you cut their hoofs! Keep up the good work! 🧤🥽🐮🐄🤎
