Today’s episode is my third interview with jim mcdonald and it’s brimming with soooo much information about the health benefits of mullein (Verbascum spp).
When jim told me he wanted to do a really long episode on mullein, I admittedly wasn’t prepared for how long he really wanted to go. But he told me that he never feels like he gets to truly share all that he wants to share about mullein. And who am I to deny him (or you, for that matter!) that opportunity?
So grab your cup of tea, get cozy and bring your notepad and pencil because there’s a lot of mullein goodness packed into this episode! And don’t miss downloading the mullein handout jim prepared just for you; you’ll find the link in the resources section below.
Why should anyone care about this weed? Well, to get started, here are a few occasions when you might reach for mullein:
► When you have a cough… especially a specific kind of cough; listen in to get the details
► If you’re dealing with stress incontinence… jim shares which part of the mullein plant can be especially helpful
► When you need a relaxing nervine… but it doesn’t work this way for everyone, so listen in to hear who’s most likely to be helped by mullein
By the end of this episode, you’ll know:
► Several hints for working with mullein smoke (including as a possible aid to quit smoking tobacco)
► The species to grow if you want to harvest mullein flowers (and why you can pick them all without fear that you’re overharvesting)
► A toxic look-alike to be aware of before wildcrafting for mullein
► Tips for increasing the shelf life of mullein infused oil
► How mullein can amplify the effectiveness of other therapies for certain types of pain
► and so much more…
For those of you who don’t already know him, jim mcdonald is an herbalist in southeast Michigan (that cool state that looks like a mitten you can see from space) where he teaches, sees clients, wildharvests, and concocts a plethora of diverse herbal formulas.
His approach to herbalism blends European folk influences mixed up with a bit of 19th century eclectic and physiomedical vitalism, which he tries to spice up with a bit of humor and discretionary irreverence so as not to appear to be too serious about life.
jim hosts the websites www.herbcraft.org and herbcraft.podia.com which list his offerings and convey his thoughts of plants and herbalism. (And if you’ve ever wondered, the lack of capitalization is because the dots over the "j" and the "i" just look super cool together).
I’m excited to share our conversation with you today!

I love mullein! For spastic coughs, one way I've used mullein that wasn't mentioned, is to make a tea of the leaves with distilled water (strain through a coffee filter) and inhale a vapor of the tea in a Vicks Personal Steam Inhaler. I think I've even used the tea once in a nebulizer. I don't like inhaling smoke, and I found this to be gentle and helpful. Thank you for sharing your wisdom! I enjoyed the conversation and look forward to trying out mullein tincture this year.

I love mullein!! Over the years I have had 2 bouts of pneumonia, then in 2022 I finally contracted Covid. My only symptom was difficulty breathing, which stayed with me, long after the covid was gone. When walking across a room causes shortness of breath and a constant fatigue, well life becomes useless. The effect I got from mullein was nothing short if a miracle to me! I now use an array of herbs, along with mullein for lung & bronchial health and restoration! I couldn't be happier. Also addressing other bodily issues with the wonderful world of herbs and their healing, supportive and restorative powers! GOD is good!

This was fantastic and filled with wonderful information! I'm still a baby herbalist myself, but I've been diving head first into it. My story with mullein: I had seen mullein two years ago on our property, but once we moved I hadn't been able to find it again. I got sick in January with Covid and took a walk in the woods once I was over my fever. There along the fence line looking brightly into the stream of sunlight was a mullein plant. I thanked the plant, gathered some leaves and immediately made a tea of mullein and pine needle. I recovered quickly and never had any coughing. I'm very excited to try the mullein root next to see if it will help with symptoms of Bell's Palsy that I've had for years.

alas; as mullein is a biennial, at two years (after it flowers and has gone to seed) it’s finished its life cycle and is dying or dead.

There was a standin of mullein in 2022. I went back to it early in 2023 and harvested the young leaves of small plants with pale fuzzy leaves. It turns out that mouse ear had taken over the spot where the mullein had been, and I didn't realize it until the flowers appeared.

I've know mullein for over twenty years. Just recently I'm hearing of something called. "Greater Mullein". There was a picture of it showing serrated leaves. Have either of you ever heard of it? The leaves looked smoother not fuzzy and in the pic they were greener.

Loved this in depth (and entertaining) teaching! I'm an herbalist from WV and my 14yo daughter is learning herbalism as well. For Valentine's Day I surprised her with matching t-shirts with our homestead logo printed on the front and "Smoke Mullein Every Day" on the back. ; ) It's not pogo sticks, but fun nevertheless!

Jim is a character... gotta love him! Very awesome podcast, not one second of boredom. I currently have such an awful spasmodic cough. Sadly, thus far nothing whatsoever has helped, and I put a lot of faith in mullein. I made strong mullein infusion with hawthorn leaf and flower and linden flower (I can't remember if that recipe was from Rosalee or Kami McBride...). And it's true, those hairs better be removed from the brew, hahaha. I learned that a long time ago from Susun Weed. Forgot to do that one time, it was not pleasant.😁

Maybe try some soothing herbs. I think of marshmallow, licorice. Maybe a adaptogenic herb like holy basil. Good luck with your cough!
@gmm3080
@gmm3080 6 месяцев назад
Yes, all great ideas, thank you. Marshmallow and licorice are in a cough syrup I took, as well as a ready cough tea blend. But no help. I did herbal gargles and herbal steams with a little ess. oil mixed in, also no effect on this cough. I made a mix of honey and onion today, letting it sit overnight. Some claim it to be wondrous for such coughs. Something's gotta give. And yes, a large dose of good luck is also much needed at this point. @@brittanyragon6033
@gmm3080
@gmm3080 6 месяцев назад
Thank you for the suggestion. Except for the holy basil I have used all the other herbs in teas, cough syrups, etc. Steam inhalations, ess, oils, foods... nothing breaks this cough. Anything that SHOULD work on a cough like mine doesn't. It's like a hex. Hot drinks, baths, this and that and then some... almost every inhale triggers cough spasms. They can get so bad they make me vomit sometimes. Also makes sleep mostly impossible as lying down increases the trigger. @@brittanyragon6033

Thanks so much. So appreciate this podcast ! Verbascum berytheum is the type of mullein in my area. The leaves have more of curly wavey vibe compared to the pics I see of verbascum spp …so I was confused about the identification confusion you spoke about at first. Medicinally, what would you say about the differences/similarities between the two species ?

THANK YOU for another great video. At 1:05:32 Jim is talking about using the mullien root and St. John's Wort together for sciatica.spine nerve pain, Is this a tea, tincture or topical salve? Topically or internally for nervines? Fascinating and very interesting. I just searched Mountain Rose Herbs and they do not carry the root. Any guess why?
