Health Secretary Wes Streeting: ‘Our NHS Is Broken & I Want To Save It’ | This Morning

Wes Streeting’s task as Secretary of State for Health and Social Care is nothing short of gargantuan. 5 million wait longer than a fortnight for a GP appointment, patients waiting lists have hit 7.5 million, pay disputes and strikes are still unresolved, wait time for ambulances, treatment at A&E, and mental health care have all increased… The diagnosis is bleak, but what about the prognosis? Electioneering over, and now that he’s examined the patient for himself - we ask the new Health Secretary to tell us - can he cure our broken NHS?

Most staff would just say "give us more money" but that wouldn't necessarily make the NHS work any better. We need root-and-branch reform, even if the state decides its better value to outsource to the private sector. Nothing should be sacred. I wish the UK would seriously consider a more european-style hybrid system but in the absence of doing that we need to go radical with the NHS we have.

I am a sepsis survivor after an 9 month admission. 5 of those spent in ICU, 2019 fabulous service from the NHS. Since 2019 i have had No GP appt at all so i have gone private to speak to an GP and to get treated for chest infections after sepsis. I would like to get an GP appointment but i am not holding my breath on this one. My son who is disabled has had sepsis 14 times and i must stress as an mum of a 29 year old with low immunity i have to fight the NHS to get my voice heard, Martha law just doesn't work. I also want to see Continuing healthcare review the red tape and the hoops you have to jump through its crazy 🤪 too many people are been turned down because an primary need is not identified. I believe an MP in parliament who also had sepsis wants to raise awareness and more research into this. Sepsis is on the rise its clear something is wrong here. Also the point i also want to make i had an blood test an my local surgery there was 340 appts missed this month people not turning up for Gp appointments 😑 people are screaming out for appointments and yet 340 GPs missed by patients just this month alone. Something is wrong here.

I found out how bad it was last weekend. After a motorcycle accident last Sunday in south Wales, my wife laid in the road in agony for 2 hours waiting for an ambulance which after 4 calls were told make your own way there...... Broken arm and possibly left ankle. A kind resident offered to take her. With great pain we got her in the car and took her to A&E 8pm Sunday arrival. Didn't see a doc until 9.30 the next morning after the day shift started. All they have is nurses checking vitals every few hrs. A minimum of 8 ambulances outside all night which had priority for the 1 doc in department. It is not the staffs fault they were amazing but this is normal for them. Labour better sort it and hurry up about it..

@@ParaquatSC I don't buy that argument because when Atlee created the NHS he didn't have to outsource to the private sector and he was able to give everyone equal free healthcare. He was able to bring the backlog down in that time without the private sector. Why can't we do it now. In Atlee's time people were healthy and more people were in employment. 90% of the nhs budget is going to the private pockets raher than treating patients. The private sector is ripping off the tax payer and tjat needs to stop. Private means more money needs to be pumped in the nhs and poor outcomes at the same time. For example, why can't hospital buildings be owned by the nhs, why do we have to pay billions and trillions to lease nhs buildings from greedy private providers who are leaching the taxpayers dry.

@@Jamal-Ahmed786 we can't do what Attlee did because the circumstances are way different compared to 1948: -We have an aging population in 2024 with a fertility rate below replacement level compared to 1948 when the population was much younger and the fertility rate was 2.6. Aging population and welfare states don't mix as public services function only if there are more actively working people than economic dependents like elderly people or people with chronic illnesses. This is quite a fundamental problem if want to do any government borrowing because if your tax revenue keeps getting smaller due to a proportionally aging population, any investment quite literally won't pay itself anymore. -NHS is one of the only healthcare systems in the world funded by general taxation, therefore the pay is determined by legally binding fiscal rules to ensure that the State does not increase their deficits to an unsustainable level. In the private sector, the nature of the cashflow is different and healthcare corporation therefore can charge above market rates for services. This is why many NHS staff move to America or Australia as their private healthcare systems offer market salary rates for doctors and nurses. You just can't do that in a publicly owned healthcare system if you exclusively rely on general taxation that is struggling with an aging population. -When the NHS was introduced, it was limited to treating infections and injuries. Nowadays, the technology and the type of operations used in the NHS are much more complex which means that maintenance costs are a lot more as a proportion of GDP than it was in 1948. -In 1948, mental health was not seen as a problem compared to today's standards. This means that further NHS resources are spread out and requires more funding in a way that wasn't required in 1948. Nowadays, people are also diagnosed with multiple comorbidities which further strains NHS resources and this is especially true in an aging population where it is elderly people who consume healthcare services the most.

He talks about a mandate and whilst it is a landslide in terms of seats, only 20 in every 100 people voted Labour, 40 in every 100 people did not vote for Labour (including 14 in every 100 people who voted Conservative) and 40 in every 100 people did not vote at all. That's not really a mandate is it?
@SamOliverYT

Ah I see you just parroting "the line". Not even your own thought. Well I would say the papers for 5 solid weeks said "this is a Labour government at this rate" and a lot of people decided this was absolutely fine by them and as such stayed home as they felt it was a done deal. We would have seen higher voter turnout of the media narrative was "it's going to be a really close race, it could be anyone's game"

It is what it is. Watch them, monitor the statistics of the issues you care about, and see if you are happy with the result come the next election. If you like what you see you know who you should vote for.

@@aman8086 That’s odd. My Brother is a GP and says he is obliged to see asylum seekers and obviously refers them on should they need it. Does the ER turn them away either? Of course not so they will head there. Plus, if you’ve you’ve just been granted citizenship why should you have the same access as someone that has contributed for years/decades. New arrivals should pay for an insurance policy until they’ve paid tax for a given term. And before you say they have nothing then I suppose you’ve closed your ears to the fact they pay thousands to traffickers. You seem a bit naive. That are jumping the queue in both welfare, housing and healthcare.
