The story back then was that the metal and hard rock bands were left out of the USA for Africa "We are the world" song done by multiple bands/artist. So the metal bands got together and did their own song.
There were two videos like this one done one was we are the children with Michael Jackson Jackson n a bunch of others and do they know it's Christmas with George Michael's in it and a bunch of others they were all pop singers/r & b etc which is what inspired this one cause no hard rock/metal band members were invited to participate in the other videos
It’s wasn’t Metal Bands, it was Ronnie James Dio. He wanted to be part of USA for Africa, but he was a dirty metal guy. So in true Metal fashion he said “F’ You” and came up with this. This whole album is a “Who’s Who” of the time. EVERYONE who was even mediocrely (most were/are platinum artists) relevant was on this album.

@@terryconnelly484 Buddy Rich and Flea … i just l edited this to say ..”just kidding” .. it’s actually the Collins bros ya know Phil and Bootsy.. haha ..
5:38 "WHO'S THIS?!" Oh that's just the one and only George Lynch, one of the best guitarists ever ;) He's actually my favorite guitar player. Played in a glam/heavy metal band called Dokken, great fucking band with killer guitar solos in just about every song. If you decide to react to them here's some tips along the way Ballads: "Alone Again" "Walk Away" Fast paced and/or kickass 80's glam/heavy metal: "Tooth and Nail" "Kiss of Death" "Unchain the Night" "Mr Scary" "Into the Fire" "Lightning strikes again" "The Hunter" As a bonus I'll throw in "When Heaven Comes Down", it's much darker and sinister than the rest of their songs but god damn is it beautiful and melancholic and the guitar solo is one of my favorites of all time.
Dokken is so badass. Standing in the shadows is my favorite song by them. Dons voice, Jeff’s bass and backup vocals, Wild Mick Browns awesome drum style, and of course, George’s awesome solos
@@pulsarlights2825 What about the killer rhythm guitar provided the Maiden duo of Adrian Smith and Dave Murray. Everyone (me included) geeks out over the different singers and solos, but Maiden (circa Somewhere in Time era) groove holds the whole song together.
I met George in Vegas, while on vacation; in an MGM suite I was invited too, after seeing Mickey Finn's (Jetboy) newer Rockabilly band at the House of Blues. There were dudes from bands that I had posters of on my walls, but they were mostly more underground. I played Breaking Tbe Chains, Lynch joined & soloed over me, and Mickey sang. I was put on the spot to play something, and because GEORGE FUCKING LYNCH was there; I jokingly started the song. George chuckled and said he "hates that fucking song", but everyone (which were mostly better musicians than I, and known in the 80's/early 90 's by hard rock/metal fans), were all calling for him to do it, and it was surreal for me. Closest I will ever get to being cool, lol.
@@wgdavis5353 I guess you can google which guitarist was on but just by the faces I also recognised Journey, Dokken, Malmsteen, Iron Maiden and the guy from Blue Murder - not sure which band he was at the time. Of course Vivian Campbell was there as well - its in the description.
Hear 'n Aid was a charity record recorded by a large ensemble of 40 heavy metal musicians and released in 1986. The project was organized by Ronnie James Dio, Jimmy Bain, and Vivian Campbell, all from the band Dio. Proceeds from the album were used to raise money for famine relief in Africa.[1] The 40 musicians which had been gathered together by Dio recorded the single "Stars" together; the rest of the album was filled out with eight other tracks, several of which were contributed by artists who were on tour and unable to attend and participate in the mass recording session. A music video was released as well, produced during the recording sessions.
@@warinsidemyhead8939 i interviewed Dio twice for a metal magazin and one of the questions was about this project , Ronnie , Jimmy and Vivian made it happen . Jimmy and Vivian wrote the music and without Dio there was no Hearn 'n Aid. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zM89fYqvvWw.html
I legitimately thought I was the only person who remembered this (including perhaps some of the participants)! 😆 I even had the cassette back in the day. Heck, knowing my parents I probably still "have" it stuffed in the back of their storage bin or something.
Lex, the singer with the sunglasses that you were curious about was Geoff Tate the lead vocalist of Queensryche. The guy with the soft hat was Paul Shortino of the band Rough Cutt as well as the second lead singer for Quiet Riot. The two blonde guitarists were Carlos Cavazzo of Quiet Riot and George Lynch of Dokken.
Paul Shortino had a killer voice, it's a shame nobody really remembers him. He sang "We all wanna touch a rainbow.." He was in a band called Rough Cutt
He, also, was Duke Fame in "This is Spinal Tap". The ST guys are all nice to his face at the hotel, and trash him mercilessly as soon as he walks away! 😂

Our cover band played this song with a twist. We'd have audience members come up and sing their fave singers part. Believe it or not, they all knew where their guy came in. My favorite singer in this is Dave Meniketti from Y&T. Check em out, you'll love it.
One of the greatest solo’s ever simply because of the number of individuals and their talent coming together and rocking out. One of my favorite songs!
Seeing the video, I realized how much Brad and Lex HAVEN’T reacted to yet…or at least that I don’t recall seeing: WASP, Dokken, more Quiet Riot, more Judas Priest, more Queensryche, Spinal Tap (lol)… So much work for them to do!
Greetings from Germany. As a Metalhead, since 1985, i was happy that they took the chance to show that we are not such antisocial and evil bad people. I was a teenager metalhead in communist Poland. 2 national and 1 regional TV stations. But on station 2 there was a 20 minute show every day where they played western pop videos. Everybody knew "USA for Africa". But one day I saw "Stars". All my heroes plus tons of others I didn't know at one place! I kept watching that show every day in hope that this clip would be played again, and one day I was lucky, but that was probably the last time they played that clip. Anyway, I came here for the song, but was equally amazed by 2 beautiful human beings reacting 🙂 Stay cool!
Brad coming in with the sharp ears here! Love that you picked up from the sound that each phrase of that long guitar solo was being played by a different guitarist. Seems like you've been listening to a lot more than just the lyrics all this time! Very cool reaction, you two!
Brad, you're looking for "vibrato" which is oscillation between two pitches and is a natural occurrence but can be controlled. Singers like Rob Halford, Ronnie James Dio, and Bruce Dickinson are good examples of metal singers who have very operatic sounds, but are fully capable of adding distortion without damaging the throat or vocal cords.
I think it is time Lex heard some Yngwie Malmsteen...I think that was the goosebumps/different sounding guitar. He has a very different sound...kind of classical music metal.
This song came out when I was stationed in Korea. 3 years later I deployed with 10th Mountain to Mogadishu, Somalia on a Humanitarian Mission. Like I said in an earlier comment, you'll know when Yngwie's note drops, you'll know George, Carlos, Vivian, Neal, Brad, Eddie, Craig, Buck, Dave, & Adrian as well. May I suggest that you take a look at Y&T Don't Stop Runnin' Thank You
Could get it on CD 20 years ago, may be still kicking around, I have the original cassette still, but it got very tired from use. That is why I chased a CD copy.
Can’t begin to explain how proud I am that you know RJD’s voice and are fans. Ronnie was such a remarkable person with pipes of gold and a heart to match.
So glad you finally did this... Yngwie is a Guitar God.. and tbe singer you also liked was Geoff Tate from Queensryche. Y'all need to look at the entire video of this, it's about an hour long..
I got this on vinyl when it came out - the group song was amazing, and the rest of the album was filled out with a great sampler of other live metal hits donated by bands who couldn't attend, plus a Hendrix studio song donated by his estate.
Hope this helps: Singers in order of appearance [Intro: Ronnie James Dio] Who cries for the children? I do... They played the harmony parts in the chorus but no solo. People from Skid Row weren't involved. They were not on anybody's radar at the time.
Ted Nugent, Yngwie Malmsteen, Tommy Aldridge and members of Dio, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Quiet Riot, Dokken, Mötley Crüe, Twisted Sister, Queensrÿche, Blue Öyster Cult, Vanilla Fudge, Y&T, Rough Cutt, Giuffria, Journey, W.A.S.P. and Night Ranger as well as the parody band Spinal Tap. Vivian Campbell, Carlos Cavazo, Buck Dharma, Brad Gillis, Craig Goldy, George Lynch, Yngwie Malmsteen, Eddie Ojeda, and Neal Schon
Yay for playing this! Always loved it and the behind the scenes is awesome,I still remember seeing it when it first came out..And Geoff Tate of Queensryche is a fave of mine,He was the singer in the white at 1:53 in the song...so many greats in this one!Keep On Rockin'
I was a long haired Metal Head teen back in the 1980's. All of the Artists in this song are the true Metal scene musicians we worshipped as stoner parking lot kids, respectable adults now, but I still listen to all these artists now.
Lex, Yngwie Malmsteen was the guitarist that caught your ear. The guy is an insane talent on the guitar, you have to listen to some of his work. He would be a household name if he had ever been in a big time band.
He's a household name if you live in a house that actually knows about guitar players. If you only like huge superstars like Pink Floyd and Queen then you're probably clueless to Yngwie and Vai and Paul Gilbert and so on and so on.
He would be a household name if he could write songs as well as he played - or at least played in a band with other people who could. Unlucky for him, he's a bad songwriter and too conceited to let anyone else write for him. As a consequence, nobody who's not a guitarist actually listens to him.
I bought that record back in 1990... I found it in a discount bin in downtown São Paulo, Brazil. Those were the days of ultra fast picking and stuff... Guilty pleasure all the way
Lex, the guitarist that you asked, “who is this?” is George Lynch of Dokken (at the time of the video). George Lynch went on to form Lynch Mob, then various solo and collaboration projects. If you’re interested in checking out Dokken, here’s a few songs: It’s Not Love, Into the Fire, In My Dreams, Dream Warriors, Heaven Sent.
Lex absolutely has a musical soul. She really picks up on the emotion in the sound-- it's such a rare gift, and it's so cool to see it in someone else! You'd probably really dig some Joe Satriani instrumentals, and some of his contemporaries.
The legends🤘 Heavy Metal thought they'd contribute with feeding the hungry in Africa at the time. I still can't believe Eddie Van Halen didn't join them.
Hey Lex, the guitarist you liked was Yngwie Malmsteen, if you want to check him out, I suggest watching his live video of Far beyond the Sun with the Japanese orchestra. You will be amazed.
Theses are my people!!! lol 😝 I love it!!!!!!! It haves me goosebumps even now to watch this video!!! They also have the making of this witch is awesome!!!! That’s how you get to know who’s singer and playing guitar 🎸!!!!
Damn, I requested this on one of your old streams many, many months ago, glad yall have finally done it. This project was the idea of Ronnie James Dio and Vivian Campbell who both played in Dio. Vivian is a mean guitarist. As I'm sure you noticed their were notable people missing. No one from Van Halen, No Ozzy, no Def Leppard, no Ratt and of course this was 1985 so they didn't ask a lot of the Younger Bands who were still making a name for themselves like a Metallica. They werent huge yet although they were known. And Skkd row didn't release their first album until 1989, so no they weren't here
Well, they haven't really missed out. That guy is all style and no substance. As is, all technique and no songs. The guy just can't write a decent song to save his life.
@@erikthompson619 really!? What about, in random order: - "Alone in Paeadise"; - "Crying"; - "Save our Love"; - "Hold on"; - "Fire"; - "Chrystal Ball"; - "Amberdawn" (or "Dawn"); - "The Only One"; - "Marching Out"; - "Heaven Tonight"; - "Evil Eye", just to name some. You just watched metals biggest supergroup of all time. Something that will never be replicated or beaten. All are from my youth and my idols to this day. Lex, your an amazing woman. Brad, your extremely lucky. Treat her like gold.... Ps. Watch the making of the song. Dio explains it all. Brings a tear to your eyes.
In this episode of Brad & Lex, The classic 80,s rock sound doesn't waste too much time to become contagious, bite Brad and infect him enough to quickly proceed with his signature "side to side sway". Lex is his co pilot on the same plane but seems to fly a little higher as she develops goosebumps and soars into a "Rocky Balboa rock bop".
Dio, organized and produced this entire thing, he also wrote it! The reason there was so much power was Dio, pushed them! Plus most of them were great musicians! Dio, my favorite singer, lyricist of all time! And Fiona Flanagan, my favorite female singer!
Lex is right it's Ronnie James Dio and with Judas' priest drummer singer backing vocals. But I get that Judas' Priest vibe.😎🌴🐊🌞😜🤔 Also A member of Ozzy Osbourne is in this. Also a member of Quiet Riot, and Queensrych, and Rough Cutt. It's a BADASS tune.
Oh god, another one of these all-star performances. These always get requested for reactions, but I can't recall ever hearing any of them played at any of the parties I went to. Although I will say this one is better than some of them, like "We are the world." ;)
Ronnie got these guys together for raising awareness of the plight in Africa, as from the Metal and hard Rock genre they weren't invited to Bandaid or USA for Africa, so this was their offering, there's an Album of work too, And you're right their all stars now pardon the pun. Not only was Dio the greatest voice he was an amazing human being for charity and rights. The love for him and his status in this field was massive respect. Saw him 7 times, only wish I'd been fortunate to have met him.

When the USA for Africa music ensemble made the “We Are The World” song and video they didn’t invite any Heavy Metal bands and artists of the day so Ronnie James Dio, Vivian Campbell and Jimmy Bain of Dio decided to make their own donation all star song and video. You guys guessed it right, these guys were the best of the best of the Metal community of the time. I loved the extended solo portion and the great guitarists who shredded their way through this song. And in answer to your question, no, no one does this anymore. Stay Cool 😎 and… \m/ Stay Metal \m/

This is the hard rock and metal stars' contribution to the charity "USA For Africa"....the first of which was primarily pop stars with "We Are The World", which I'm sure you've seen...which was in response to British music stars doing the first video bringing attention to the famine in Africa with their song "Do They Know It's Christmastime". The culmination of all this was the epic, biggest concert of all time, Live Aid, in 1985!
I was so happy to see you guys get to this one! I can’t list all 40 of them, but some of my favorites are Ronnie James Dio (RIP), Vivian Campbell, Kevin Dubrow (RIP) and Carlos Cavazo of Quiet Riot, Geoff Tate of Queensryche, George Lynch and Don Dokken of Dokken, Vince Niel and Mick Mars of Mötley Crue, Blackie Lawless and Chris Holmes from W.A.S.P., Neil Schon from Journey, Yngwie Malmsteen of course, and Rob Halford of Judas Priest… Glad you both enjoyed it and it was for a good cause back then, 1986 (before Skid Row came on the scene so not exactly sure where Lex got that sound/feeling from - lol 😝
When you both watched the video for "USA for Africa" I was thinking about mention this metal version of a charity project. It seems like someone else did.
