As a former soldier (not for Russia) I'm truly horrified how they treat their soldiers. No proper training, no gear, food, shelter, not enough ammo and now being used for target practice? How can anyone be patriotic to a country when your life has absolutely no value to them? And for what? A land grab by a country that is already the largest in the world?

I served for the USSR and the Russian Federation. We never used to be this ridiculous. Back when we first became a federation and prior, we were a formidable force. The USSR left us with fabulous training and high quality equipment. Had we struck Ukraine then, we would’ve won in weeks. However, most of that equipment fell into disuse and nobody even bothered making the appropriate equipment for our current fighting force, nor did they allow me and other old schoolers to actually train our forces correctly. It’s why I left in 2013 as a Lieutenant General. Inadequate and appalling. Most of Ukraine’s weapons are American, so I just applaud the U.S for fun. We use equipment from the 70’s that hardly functions and untrained convicts, so you can probably guess why we’re getting our asses handed back to us.

Yeah, it came as a minor shock at first, but then I quickly realized that I was not surprised. A desperate government will break any rule to secure a single sliver of their future, even if that means conscripting tourists, aid workers, foreign diplomats, journalists or in this case exchange students.

Recreating the past- Penal units that were created from prisoners during WWII in all branches of the Wehrmacht. Soldiers, criminals and civilians sentenced to those units were generally poorly armed and required to undertake dangerous high-casualty missions. The Strafbataillon were operated and administered by the German military police.
The Soviets often used their penal battalions to clear minefields by running through them. But if a penal battalion wasn't available they'd use normal units.

Putin needs troops without further upsetting a society to whom he sold this war as "quick and easy" (parallels here to Dubya's immense failure to plan for the occupation of Iraq, and his resulting abuse of the "stop-loss" clause in the contracts of servicemembers to shore-up numbers he'd otherwise have to bolster with a hugely-unpopular draft), so Vlad recruits convicts with promises of pardons. You can add that during Iraq/Afghanistan, US military policy changed and non-citizens were allowed to join. Serving fast tracks citizenship for yourself and your immediate family.

Me and my fellow soldiers constantly complain about how bad the military leaders and VA treats us.. Like " I can't believe I have to wait 2 weeks to get a MRI scan" or " I married that stripper 2 months ago and my BAH still hasn't increased" or " WTF! There's only pomegranate flavor Rip-Its."... But seriously after seeing stuff like this I realize how absolutely spoiled we are in the US military. We are treated like freakin royalty when compared to most other country's militaries. I think watching videos like this should be mandatory in basic training. Also many people might have this misunderstanding that just because these Russian troops are basically our enemy that we enjoy hearing about stuff like this. But you'd be wrong. They are soldiers, they expect to die in battle but not to be lined up and murdered by their own leaders. That is probably the most cruel, disrespectful and dishonorable way to go out as a Soldier/Marine/Airman/Sailor. And lets not forget these men were injured lying in hospital beds. The soldier in the video is all over Russian TV and was honored for lying to the enemy after getting lost. They tried to scare him after worrying he had joined the other side. This CNN story is being mocked outside of the US as a hoax, but it's CNN, so what can we expect? Almost every time they get it wrong, and they never apologize. They will hide some tiny paragraph in the corner of their website apologizing for this.
What little I know about World War II, I remember reading about on the Eastern Front in the fighting between Germany and Russia it was common for Russia to use regular soldiers to attack in large waves where they were meet by German machine guns positions which would mow down wave after wave that was sent at them until they eventually ran out of bullets. Any Russian soldiers realizing they were being sent into a death trap and tried to run back would themselves be mowed down by other Russia soldiers who had orders to kill any survivors who did anything that looked like they were trying to flee instead of fighting. It was even WORSE for prisoners (whether they were Russian criminals from jails or German/individuals from other countries and prisoners of war) who were conscripted and didn't join willingly. They more often than not given no weapons (largely out of fear they would more likely use them on Russian soldiers then on any enemy soldier) and instead used as a kind of "human shield" were they would have to do things like walk through mine fields, in front of or on top of tanks (ie. in order to potentially get hit by a shot meant for the tank), or in front of Russian troops advancing in the hopes that they might get a shot that was meant for a Russian soldier. I also believe that such units are called Penal Units or Penal Battalions since they are given tasks the no regular soldier can be expected to do. To me it is really no surprise that the Russian military is using whomever they have at their disposal as nothing more than human cannon fonder given the tactics they used in WWII and other wars. IHMO any country that has a history of treating either their regular units or people forced into penal units can be expected to have any respect for the lives of the soldiers under them. Instead it is a given that those that fight for them will again and again be sent into a meat grinder in the hopes that doing so will somehow help those in power win the war or at least allow them to remain in power. In some places in the world, the people under those that rule are more useful as mere pawns to be expended in order for them to maintain (or expand) the power and control that they already have. There are several articles and essays about how the Russian military is structured. It's not how it's done in the West. If anything, Wagner is just a private version of how the Federal Russian army is set up. The regular Russian army really isn't much different than Wagner. They just get paid a lot less (and Wagner already only pays maybe $2500 a month if you're lucky). Regular army units recruit their own people. Generals rule those units like their own little medieval fiefdoms, and they have side businesses where they might sell military supplies on the blackmarket, often involving their own recruits. In other words, if you are Russian and you go into the Army recruiting office, you are going to join and train with a specific military unit. They will basically own you. What you get trained in, the uniform you wear, the supplies you get, your accommodations, etc. all depends on the military leaders of those army units. While Putin assigns high level military leadership, the guys who control what we'd call "divisions" here in the west, are like warlords and allowed to pretty much do whatever they want (so long as they don't get caught... and we've heard of these guys committing suicide or mysteriously dying). So if you ever wonder how a modern military in Europe can allow their troops to go into battle with 1960s era first aid kits, fake plastic athletic helmets because they sold the better helmets to another army unit leader or even another foreign nation's military, or you're allowed to loot and rape (even locally, during training) with little to no repercussions, now you know. What's even crazier is recent stories of Wagner and regular Russian military units fighting amongst themselves. As in firefights. This is nothing new. It happened during WWII when you had multiple generals and their respective army units converging on the same prize. It is well known that as the Russians moved towards Berlin, units would bombard each other with artillery fire so that they could be the first into the city. They literally killed their own people for glory.
A very good insight. I hope you know this from more than just western internet outlets and media notes. Because the very CNN here has been extremely partial and shoved us tons of propaganda up our throats that I cannot trust the content pf most of the notes.

This story wasn't real, this guy is all over Russian TV today. It's unclear what actually happened but CNN's version appears to be completely made up by fiction writers.
