To this day, my favorite KISS story has to be when they performed a concert on Halloween in Hollywood (about 15-20 years ago) and the concert they were being driven by van back to their hotel. However this being on Sunset boulevard AND Halloween everybody was out partying and causing a virtual standstill in traffic. The band decided to get out of the van and walk back to their hotel. They were still in full makeup and costume having left the concert almost immediately after its conclusion. During the walk, nobody stopped and harassed them and they only got a few complements shouted out on how good their costumes were and they made it back to their hotel with ease because nobody realized who they really were!

Wow, you sure know how to pick 'em, Irish Rocker Girl! I only saw KISS one time, in October of '75 in the Cadillac high school gym, just before I joined the US Navy. The band was just starting to take off when that happened. The story of KISS in Cadillac is fascinating. The whole glam-rock schtick with the make-up and outfits led the band to create a vast array of collectible merchandise which sold very well and made the band a lot of money. Their live shows were filled with lots of theatrics: Gene spitting fire, Ace's guitar giving off sparks and smoke during solos, lotsa pyrotechnics throughout. The look on your face when you recognized Gene Simmons by his tongue: simply priceless!

When this song was released, it caused a bit of an uproar amongst Kiss fans, many of them hated the fact that their favorite hard rock band had written a disco song. It was written on a bet. Paul Stanley (the lead vocalist for this song) had bet a friend that it was easier to write a disco song than it was to write a rock song. This was the result, and he wrote it quickly, supposedly over a single weekend.
@christopherconard2831

A fair number of hits have been cranked out fast. My Sharona (The Knack) was written along a similar challenge. The writer didn't like pop music of the time because "anyone could write a top 40 song". When told to do try if it was so easy he wrote the song in about 15 minutes. I've read some reports he wrote it while sitting on the toilet. Or about as long as it takes to crap. According to Robert Plant, Stairway to Heaven took as long to write as it does to play. For all the work and creative talent musicians pour into their work, it's often throw away or filler pieces that end up defining them.

The song that you thought might be from the band KISS sounds like the song titled "Kiss" by Prince. "I Was Made for Lovin' You" was released near the end of the disco era, and was KISS's version of a disco song. Various other rock acts at the time, such as Rod Stewart, The Rolling Stones, and others released disco-influenced songs in the late 70s, with varying levels of artistic and financial success. Most KISS songs were heavier than this, although they also had a big hit with a soft ballad titled "Beth". Coincidentally, I attended a KISS concert around the time "I Was Made For Lovin' You" was released. In July 1979 I saw KISS at the Pontiac Silverdome (a football stadium near Detroit). I was not a big KISS fan, but I went mainly to see the band that played before them, Cheap Trick. I stayed for KISS, though. While not a fan, I don't dislike them either.

Kiss was formed in 1973. That's 50 years ago and their End-Of-The-World tour ends this December 2023, so they still have a strong following in the states. Per your reaction, the 4 original makeup designs are registered with the US Patent and Trademark Office, which I found interesting. (Didn't David Bowie have a lightning mark on his face, instead of a star?) I can't remember. And I believe you're correct. Per today's standards, this 45 year old song is somewhat repetitive. But this comparison may be a tad unfair. Perhaps, it's more accurate to compare this song to other songs, from hard rock bands of the 1970's. Also, I recommend "Beth", performed by Kiss (re-released in 1979) which became a Gold record, and demonstrates their versatility.

Great video Diane! I love that you checked out KISS! I know I was one of those who suggested them! I would rather you did "Rock and Roll All Nite" but am excited you did a KISS song! The RRAN video shows them at the best in real concert! I've seen them 16 times myself in concert! An awesome experience! This song interestingly was their biggest commercial single and also is directly responsible for the original group to break up. Within 3 years of this video 2 original members left the band. They both came back for the Reunion tour in 1996, but have since left again. KISS just announced their last show as a group this December in NYC! Keep up the great work beautiful!

Kiss was HUGE in their day. They had a fully constructed schtick with the make-up for their characters, who all had a back story. They had a surprisingly good catalogue of music (Detroit Rock City is likely their best known song) that sort of straddled the line between harder rock and glam. But their biggest impact would likely be their genius marketing strategy. They called their fanclub the KISS Army and interacted in a way that virtually no one had before. They also licensed their name/likeness for almost any and everything to an extent never thought of (everything from Pat he's to see in a jacket to lunchboxes to a coffin....yes, an actual coffin). While their lineup did change several times, Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons have always been the core of the band.

I'll disagree about Detroit Rock City. The song that was on the radio all the time was Rock and Roll All Night. I listened to top 40 in 1975 and later but that song was everywhere. That was their big break out song. In 1976 they won The Peoples Choice Award for being the most popular band that year. They were in a concert when it was announced and that was the song they played on live national TV.

Cope, it's a great pop song and showed they weren't too anally retentive about "keeping it real"

While I'm not a fan of Disco, KISS did an excellent job with their version of Disco. They're truly an amazing band and the song "I was made for loving you" is one of my favorite KISS songs, the other being "Save Your Love".

When KISS showed up on the music scene, it was as transformative to music, as the 🪲 Beetles and Elvis. They didn't show up knocking on the industry's door 🚪, they kicked it in and the youth were all in on it. Massive crowds of people face painted to look like their favorite kiss band member. Try to find some concert pics or commercials.

He really doesn't. Just gene being gene. I remember when dynasty came out and this song came on. I was shocked. This was the third tour of kiss I saw

Kiss was my first favorite band back in the 70's. They were credited with creating the "wall of sound" and had the most entertaining live shows. Been to many of their concerts, the first in 1975. If you want to check out the next generation in rock listen to Band Maid's live Domination!

You should probably watch one of their live performances to get the actual effect of them performing.

KISS was a GLAM band, meaning outrageous excentric outfits. It was not because of marketing but a trend from the 70’s. Just look how Elton John used dress at the beginning of his career. 😊Loved your reaction.

KISS were called Kabuki for Rock theatrics but Alice Cooper probably invented much of that, and Pink Floyd for staging

Lord almighty! There are so many groups both mainstream and other you need to check out. Billy Thorpe's "Children of the Sun", Queen had a ton of great songs but "Bohemian Rhapsody" is probably the best known, Thin Lizzy's "Boys Are Back In Town", "The Cowboy Songs", or "Whiskey In The Jar", Lynyrd Skynyrd"s "BAllad of Curtis Lowe", "Working For MCA", or "The Needle And The Spoon", Coyote Run with "But For Blood", almost anything from Albannach (though my 2 favorites are "Unleash The Albannach" and "Claymores"), Gary Moore's "Over The HIlls And Far Away" or "Still Got The Blues", the Allman Brothers Band "WHipping Post". I could go on all day and still not run out of ideas.

I was ten years old when KISS hit their peak in the late '70s. My first rock concert was KISS with Cheap Trick opening, about two weeks before Cheap Trick's first nationwide release. I adored Cheap Trick, and fell asleep during KISS. Unfortunately, my older brother is still trying to be an adolescent and forwarding videos to me from this era.

Of all the KISS songs to get for your first taste, this is absolutely the WORST POSSIBLE song. It is an anomaly and not typical of KISS in any way. 99.9999999% of KISS' catalog is ROCK. For a true taste of KISS, try something like Detroit Rock City or things from their live concerts from 1976 or 1977. Love Gun, God of Thunder, Rock Bottom, Parasite, She, so many far, far, FAR better choices than their one and only disco hit. You have to see them play LIVE to really understand or appreciate them.

Having seen Kiss, from both sides of the stage, they really do put on a spectacular stage performance; worth the price of the ticket.

Desmond Child always ceeates gold when he writes a song for someone else. He has written songs for KISS in the 80's, Joan Jett and Bon Jovi to name a few. He was a musician in the 70's as well.

Like already posted this song was basically quickly done as proof of how it was too easy to write disco songs, which were basically hated in the rock world at the time - and it then because one of their biggest hits 😀
