As an Irish girl who loves discovering new music, today I’m listening to Def Leppard’s iconic song Pour Some Sugar On Me for the first time! I’ve heard so much about this legendary 80s rock band, but nothing prepared me for the energy and vibe of this track. Join me as I react to the beats, guitar riffs, and catchy lyrics of this classic anthem!
🎸 Some of my favorite lyrics: "Pour some sugar on me, ooh, in the name of love!"
This song is a total blast, and I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to experience it. Let me know in the comments what other rock songs I should check out next!

This definitely brings back some memories. I saw them live on the tour that coincides with the time frame of this video. The most unique feature of this tour was that most of the shows were "in the round", which you can get a sense of from the video. There's also a bit of resemblance between "Pour Some Sugar on Me" and "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. I think you're right about the three-chord rule. Songs that use the same chords tend to sound similar. In jazz there's something called a "contrafact," which is a piece that's deliberately based on an existing song. Examples include Thelonious Monk's "In Walked Bud" (based on Irving Berlin's "Blue Skies"), Duke Ellington's "Cotton Tail" (based on George and Ira Gershwin's "I Got Rhythm"), and George Shearing's Lullaby of Birdland" (based on Walter Donaldson's "Love Me or Leave Me"). You can sing or play a contrafact on top of the song it's based on without them clashing with each other. Glam rock as a category has more to do with what they look like than the music itself. Glam rock bands (which include glam metal) use things like makeup, platform shoes, glitter, etc. David Bowie was one of the leading glam rock performers. I looked up musicians and bands from Sheffield. One of the most famous is the singer Joe Cocker. Another is The Human League. The band Pulp is also from Sheffield-curiously, their lead singer, Jarvis Cocker, is not related to Joe Cocker. The word "def" is slang for "excellent" in the American Black community. That doesn't seem to have anything to do with Def Leppard, though. I think Joe Elliott and Tony Kenning were probably not aware of this when they named the band. How about reacting to Blondie? You'd probably recognize some of their songs. Their biggest hits are "Heart of Glass," "Call Me," "The Tide Is High," and "Rapture." There's a really good video of "Heart of Glass" on the BlondieMusicOfficial channel on RU-vid that would be good to react to.

it always brings joy to us long-time fans of Def Leppard when someone new realizes that the drummer, Rick Allen, has only one arm. yes, he is the ONLY one-armed drummer in rock history, and we remember the struggle it took for him to recover losing his arm in a car accident in early 1984. and the rest of the band call him the Thunder God since then! Hysteria was the first album the group made when Rick Allen recovered from that injury, and Pour Some Sugar On Me nearly didn't make it onto that album. the lead singer, Joe Elliot wanted to wait to put it on the next album, but their producer told them to put it on this one!

Produced by Mutt Lange. Written by him, Joe Elliott, Phil Collen, Rick Savage and the late Steve Clark. The Hysteria album was almost finished. Lange wanted 1 more song. Many of the members of Def Leppard took a break. But Joe Elliott strummed a pattern on guitar. Lange heard it and liked it! They, Collen, Savage and Clark wrote the remainder of the song. Singer Joe Elliott said Queen is a major influence. 1 We Will Rock You (produced by Roy Baker) influenced this song. 2 Guitarist Steve Clark died in Jan 1991. Freddie Mercury in Nov same year. Surviving members of Queen invited surviving members of Def Leppard to play at the Freddie Tribute. Queen guitarist Brian May presented DL to the Rock + Roll Hall of Fame. Vivian Campbell is from Northern Ireland. He replaced Clark. The other influence of this song is the Aerosmith version of Walk This Way. The drummer Rick Allen plays with only his right arm! 40 years ago, he lost his left arm in an accident. He thought about quitting but retaught himself! The 2nd chorus + outro of this song sounds almost the same as the bridge in Everything I Do I Do It for You sung by Bryan Adams. No copyright violation: Mutt Lange is the cowriter of both songs! The sung verses of PSSOM sound similar to Jukebox Hero written by Lou Gramm + Mick Jones. Mutt is the producer of all 3 songs! Suggested videos: 1 Bryan Adams. Everything I Do I Do It for You. 🇨🇦 2 Def Leppard performs Animal. 3 The Cars perform Drive. 4 The Corrs perform Breathless. 5 Shania Twain sings Man I Feel Like a Woman.

Vivian Campbell (guitar), who joined Def Leppard in 1992 after the tragic death of the band's original guitarist Steve Clark in 1991, is Irish... Campbell was quoted,"... to play guitar to the level that Phil (Collen, guitar) and I play in DEF LEPPARD but to also sing to the level that we do on top of that. That's really what is the difficult aspect about being in DEF LEPPARD." Guitarist Phil Collen joined Def Leppard in 1982 and he said that the band felt musically closer to pop bands like Duran Duran, rather than heavy metal bands like Iron Maiden... In 1983, Def Leppard's 3rd album 'Pyromania' was second in sales (10 million copies in the US) in N. America to Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' album (the biggest selling album of all time) ... Drummer Rick Allen's car accident and loss of his left arm delayed the release of the next Def Leppard album 'Hysteria' until 1987. It took a few months for 'Hysteria' to sell...and in the Summer of '88, the album's 4th single 'Pour some sugar on me' became a massive hit and 'Hysteria' soon outsold Michael Jackson's (then) latest album 'Bad' at 12 million copies in the US alone... On the 'Hysteria' tour, Def Leppard performed in arenas on a stage that was set up at the center of the venue (rather than at the end of a venue) ... It was a stage setup that Metallica adopted in 1991 and still use on tour today. Tragically, guitarist Steve Clark struggled w/ drug and alcohol addictions... as well as manic depression. By 1990, he was in and out of rehab and delaying recording sessions... Def Leppard gave him a leave of absence to try help him recover but he was found dead in his home a few months later... Def Leppard recorded their 1992 album 'Adrenalize' w/ Phil Collen playing all of Steve Clark's parts on the album. Guitarist Vivian Campbell joined in 1992 first appeared on their 1993 release 'Retro active' (which comprised of unreleased Def Leppard songs) and did his first full Def Leppard studio album 'Slang' in 1996. Def Leppard struggled in the 90's as grunge rock decimated their popularity but they still sold half million copies of the albums 'Slang' in 1996 and 'Euphoria' in 1999... They carried on and regained their popularity by 2005 on the strength of their catalog of hits and even did a TV performance w/ a young Taylor Swift on the country music show 'Crossroads' in 2008.

I'm still blown away by the incredible talent and perseverance of drummer Rick Allen! The way the camera angles highlight his one-armed drumming skills is a testament to his adaptability and dedication to his craft. It's even more inspiring when you consider that Rick lost his left arm in a car accident in 1984, but the band refused to let that hold him back. They worked with him to develop a custom drum kit that allowed him to continue playing, and the rest is history. Rick's determination and the band's loyalty are a true rock 'n' roll story. He's an amazing drummer and an inspiration to anyone who's ever faced adversity. Def Leppard deserves so much respect for keeping Rick on board and allowing him to continue doing what he loves.

Thanks, Diane, for helping round out my egg-shaped music knowledge. Good song. Didn't recognize it by name but recognized it immediately upon hearing it. Heard of Def Leppard (of course) but couldn't have told you who performed it or any of their songs.

The cool thing is that Def Leppard band members waited on drummer Rick Allen to re learn how to play an electric kit with his feet and other arm.

So here's the skinny. Def Leppard had success early on and reached stardom with the album Pyromania (it sold some 6 million copies, 10 million to date). Due to several tragic events, DL's next album took 4 years to make and was fraught with setbacks (Rick Allen's lost arm, Mutt Lange stepping away from producing then coming back and getting pneumonia) they needed the album to sell 5 million copies just to break even. The album was doing okay, but sales were lagging. It wasn't until some strippers in Florida began using PSSOM in their routines. Clients began asking radio stations to play it, and the song and album blew up. Fast forward to today, the album Hysteria has sold over 30 million copies.

I was at this concert in Denver, CO back in 1988 when they filmed the video. They sang the song 2x to make sure they got enough usable footage. It was an awesome concert too. Tesla was the opening band and they rocked hard too.

Just checked Wikipedia and there about a 100 bands/performers from Sheffield. I always liked their song "Switch 625" which is the instrumental song after "Bringing On The Heartache" (they are connected) and back in the day you were lucky if the radio station played both.

The band was first based in Sheffield England ... which was a steel town... lots of foundries etc... so the term Sheffield steel... fit their intro to new wave of British heavy metal

Rick Allen didn't give up as many drummers would if losing an arm. He hunkered down and worked to setup an electronic drum kit (among the earliest) to be able to create sounds without the left arm. His fills might seem simple because of this, but he can definitely drive a rock sound like few others. Also, many drummers take off their shoes to play as you get better feel and control. It also allows some heel-toe technique for doubling up the bass notes.

Not sure if you noticed, but their drummer has only one arm. He lost it from an accident, and they were going to dissolve the band, but the drummer figured it out and the band waited for him to do so.

Def Leppard has been my favorite band for over 30 years. I have seen them around 25 times, and they are some of the nicest guys you’ll ever want to meet, especially Joe Elliott. They have suffered quite a lot, not only the loss of Rick’s arm, but in 1991 they lost their guitarist, Steve Clark. Saying that, this song is the cheesiest. Any other song in their catalog is far better. They also write some of the most beautiful rock ballads in the genre. ❤

Ah yes, Irish Girl! Def Leppard was/is a staple on classic rock radio stations. Most of their songs are about sǝx! Glam Metal also known as Hair Metal (because of the Big Hair 80's) was usually included in the genre Arena Rock, for the size of venue that a band could sell out. Rick Allen, AKA "Thunder God" caught yer eye a few times before you realized his missing arm was a real deal. Thanks again, Diane. Hope you and Chewie are havin' a Wondǝrful Wǝᴉɍdnǝsday.

At least a part of this video was filmed at the old McNichols Sports Arena, in Denver, not too far from the Metropolitan State College (now University) campus I attended at the time. This is part of a film the band made about the tour, and they wanted an audience for this segment, so word went out to have people come in and sit in the bleachers while they filmed. A lot of the audience consists of people who attended college at the same time I did, and I knew a few of them. I didn't go to this, myself. I had to work my way through school, and frequently held an internship, also. So any time I wasn't in class or working or studying, I was unconscious -- crashed out at home. 😴 I still loved the band, though. I recommend, "Rock of Ages"and "Foolin'".

So, if you want to get more into "glam metal" (also known as "hair metal") you should check out Motley Crue (Wild Side is one of my favorite songs by them), Twisted Sister (I Wanna Rock and We're Not Gonna Take It are their two super popular songs, but I really enjoy their "Wake Up the Sleeping Giant", "The Kids Are Back", "One Bad Habit", and "Love is for Suckers"); W.A.S.P. (these bands are all part of the glam/hair metal genera but also considered shock rockers). Anyway, lots to choose from. Enjoy! 🙂
