The was the greatest. He opened the 2006 Winter Olympics with this aria. It was his last public performance. He passed away in 2007, at the age of 71, of pancreatic cancer. He opens his mouth and angels sing. There will never be another like Luciano. He is a conductor. Everyone watches him for direction. He was the "King of the High C".

The conductor is chiefly in charge of keeping the tempo of both singer and orchestra together.

This is opera sung in Italian. Heading the orchestra is the Conductor. This is the aria from the opera by Puccini entitled "Turandot." Luciano was Italian & one of the greatest, if not THE greatest, of all time. The thing about Luciano was the emotion & passion he sang with, as you can see it here very obviously. There are many very good opera singers but it was Luciano whose soul & gut went into what he sang. He passed away in 2007. He attended Princess Diana's funeral.

This is opera In musical works, singing voices are roughly divided into the four voice ranges soprano, alto, (women) tenor and bass (men) according to pitch. Pavarotti was one of the best and most famous tenors, together with Jose Carreras and Placido Domingo. Opera singers have to study a few years at a university for music and art. Operas are stage plays in which the text is not spoken but sung. In addition to the singers on stage, there is an orchestra that sits in the orchestra pit and accompanies the music. The first work of the opera genre is La Dafne by Jacopo Peri (premiered in 1598).

If you want to hear a female opera singer, I suggest Maria Callas. Just like Pavarotti, she has an enormous catalog of songs. One of my favirites with her is Casta Diva. BTW, I saw Pavarotti live, in Romania, in 1999.

Surprised you’ve never actually seen a symphony orchestra or a Classical/Opera singer before! You got the role of the conductor (director) basically right - he is guiding the general pacing and interpretation of the ensemble as they play the written piece, and will also have developed the interpretation in their rehearsals. He does not, however, have any power over the pitches they play - that is already written in the music they’re all reading. Basically, the conductor is like the director of a movie, working with someone else’s screenplay, and marshaling the forces of all these top professionals at his disposal. He “plays” the orchestra, and they play their instruments, following his lead, all at the service of the written composition (in this case, the song/aria “Nessun Dorma”, from the opera “Turandot”).

Dear 'Shockwave', You seem a newcomer to opera who might come to enjoy it? I see a commentator suggests another top singer: Maria Callas. I should like to add yet another: American Jessye Norman. Look for her performance of "Dido's lament". There are several on youtube, for example the video "Jessye Norman - A Portrait - When I am laid in Earth (Purcel". The title of the opera it's from is "Dido and Aeneas", and it is from so far back as 1688-89. Or perhaps you might enjoy some "events": More than 10 years ago, lots of nations in Europe as well as the USA decided to play classical music in unexpected places, and produce videos of the happenings. Orchestras and singers "descended on an unexpecting public". The performing groups were called Flash Mobs. ((The sound of the videos has likely been dubbed in in many examples, before publishing the videos, otherwise the surroundings would be too noisy, but the events were real.) Here is one of my favourites. It is from a city in the western part of Hungary. The opera is one of the most famous ones, "Aida" by Giuseppe Verdi, and the number is the "Triumphal March", which is the peak of the opera. The man you see first, on the motor bike, is the leading musician of the orchestra (after the conductor). The chorus joins in a little bit into the piece, and as you can see, many of the people who just seemed to be out for a stroll in the park, are actually part of the chorus. Surprise surprise. Title of the video: "Aida played on a Harley - Flash mob of the Savaria Symphony".

This was Pavarotti at his peak. Even this song was too little for the massive capacity of his voice.

I guess in Africa the closest thig to Opera would be the yells and dances around the fire of the heads hunters.
