Luciano Pavarotti is one of the great tenors of all times. Not only due to his voice, but also the emotion he puts into his singing makes me chill every time.
For all those who are not into Opera. This clip is from a recital, where Pavarotti is singing different "arie", little pieces from different Operas. You can think of Opera like a musical before cinema was created. The story is narrated by music and acting, and is usually full of passion, deaths, betrayals and every kind of thing that can make the audience emotional. And every singer must also be an actor. This aria is from Turandot, a beautiful but maleficent princess who kills every guy who wants to marry her but is not able to answer three riddles. But the prince Calaf is in the end able to give the right answers. Calaf is in the end forced to make a riddle to Turadot and he ask "What is my name?". And in this aria Calaf is waiting for the sun to rise, when he will be able to marry the princess. That's why he says "the mystery is within me" and "at dawn I will be the winner". If you want to have a glimpse of what Opera really is, I can suggest you to check the aria "Vesti la giubba" performed by Pavarotti (with subtitles). Cheers
Great synopsis, but I'd add the other consequences. Yes if Turandot fails to find out his name by dawn then she has to marry him. But if she does find out his name she can go ahead and put him to death, and for that reason she decrees that nobody in the city shall sleep that night until his name is discovered and that if the people of the city fail to discover his name then it is all of them that will die rather than him. Hence the title Nessun Dorma, which translates as None Shall Sleep.
I had the absolute honor of seeing Pavarotti in Concert in Chicago in the 90s. I’ve been to many Concerts of various genres of music over my 6 decades and yet that Concert stands out as one of, if not the best. I remember getting a lump in my throat at his performance. I knew I was seeing something exceptional and so special.
This is the epitome of human evolution. It is just incredible! Each time I listen I am always very emotional 😭 He is in a state of trance during this exhibition!
Keep in mind, this was exceptional, even for him. You can see it on his face at the end. That's the look of a man who knows he just knocked it out of the park.
Regardless if you are familiar with, a fan (or not) of Opera as a genre, you can still appreciate the natural talent & dedication of this legendary tenor to become one of the best this modern world has ever seen. This was recorded back in 1994 when Luciano was 59 years old. How many modern day pop stars half his age can belt out notes like he did? Sadly, very few these days. This was back before auto tune & done in front of a live audience consisting of over 75,000 people. This is just an aria (solo part) of the opera "Turandot" by Giacomo Puccini, written in 1924 & first performed in 1926. The world lost a tremendous talent when Luciano passed away in 2007. I'm glad that my 2nd favorite tenor, Andrea Bocelli, is still alive & singing his heart out... When I was a kid I didn't like opera much because to my immature & unsophisticated ears, it all just seemed like a bunch of yelling done in singsong form & I couldn't understand the words. It wasn't until I was in my late teens/early 20's when I began to fully appreciate what it took to become a trained classical (aka opera) singer. You don't have to understand the lyrics in order to feel the raw passion behind each performance. Great music & incredible natural talent transcends all languages & ages.
Great reaction. I’ve watched this a gazillion times, and how he finds the air to sustain that last long note, without any appreciable drawing of breath beforehand is just astonishing!
Yet another reactor who is bowled over by JUST THE FIRST TWO WORDS. Thank you. And of course what we have here is a superb singer & actor, plus brilliant music to work with.
Nessun dorma! Nessun dorma! Morir! Morir!) coro Dilegua, o notte! Tramontate, stelle! Tramontate, stelle! All'alba vincerò! Vincerò! Vincerò! The translation Let no one sleep, Let no one sleep! Even you, oh Princess, In your cold room, Watch the stars, That tremble with love And with hope. But my mistery is hidden within me, My name no one shall know, No... no... On your mouth, I will tell it, When the light will shine. And my kiss will dissolve the silence that makes you mine! (No one will know his name and we must, alas, die, die.) chorus Vanish, o night! Set, stars! Set, stars! At dawn, I will win! I will win! I will win!
Great? Do you even realize that you are listening to probably the greatest tenor of all time? Who is the god, the absolute god ... Jussi Bjorling, or Luciano Pavarotti. That question because others don't even come close to them and that mankind has had great tenors like Giuseppe Di Stefano, Franco Corelli, Tito Schipa.... but even these masters and kings are far behind the gods of JB and LP.
This operatic aria is taken from TURANDOT. Although written for a man, there have been some great renditions by women, notably Amira Willighagen, the Dutch soprano (CIG 2017). Hope you enjoyed your introduction to opera. Best wishes, JOE. Ps. The last notes, Vincero, Vincero, I Will Win! I Will Win! There are English translations of the aria available.
You think 7 years before you were born is old? Well, that was the date of this performance, but this opera itself was *composed* in 1924, and there are operas still being performed today that were composed in the 1700s, more than *200 years* ago! For example, "The Magic Flute" by Mozart was composed in 1791 (232 years ago!) and is still a success today. Good music is ageless.

Randomly came across your channel and liked your reaction to hearing opera for the first time. In England it became a hit because it was played at The World Cup final lol. Another operatic anthem played at football world cup was Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Cabala singing Barcelona, brilliant!! There's something about football and great music that goes together. I would like to introduce you however to a living performer, the best voice in the world today. Bless yourself by listening to The Voicebender, Maestro Supreme and a most beautiful human being, Dimash! 💛 There is nothing he has sung that is not perfection but I would suggest a song that you are familiar with, his live performance of All by myself at Bastau 2017 concert, you will fall in love, of course it helps that he is gorgeous too lol. Do Not do Worlds Best, it is boycotted by his fans, whom he calls Dears because of their rudeness. He just turned 29yrs old this 24th May, he is from Kazakhstan, he sings every genre including rap, he sings in 14 languages, he has an 8octave range as high as Mariah Carey's, he is just phenomenal. Also has super cool fashion sense. Please please react to him I know you will love him too and become a Dear. Thank you. UKDear 💜🏴
This was written in the 1920s by Italian composer Giacomo Puccini. Very nice reaction. Please listen again without any interruptions. ❤ Also, check out his duet with of all people, James Brown!
Speak in Italian because all the music written and composed from 1598 to today was invented by the Italians (Euridice composed by Jacopo Peri on the text of the homonymous pastoral eclogue by the Florentine poet Ottavio Rinuccini). The scores have the letters in Italian (although today they are translated into English), and the terms used in the scores are all Italian.
@@RossM3838 You didn't understand what I wrote. I'm not talking about the composer's nationality. I'm talking about the fact that classical music, operas, arias... since 1500 are mostly in Italian, The musical score is written with tempos in Italian "fast" "lento" "andante" "pianissimo", The notes music are in Italian.
This is part of a Three Tenors concert with Zubin Mehta conducting. This particular clip was from the 1998 concert - I think I recall correctly. Previous concerts were conducted by Zubin and John Levine. The other tenors taking part were Placido Domingo and José Carreras. Their medleys are certainly worth a watch as they enter into some friendly challenging matches, almost looking as if they are making up the order in which they sing as they go along. Great fun.
Do me a favor.. Listen to this Aria everyday for the rest of your life.... You will never tire of it , and it will grow and grow on you and become part of your soul...xxx
No sleep! No sleep! You too, oh Princess In your cold room You look at the stars that tremble with love And of hope But my mystery is closed in me My name no one will know No, no, on your lips I will say it When the light will shine And my kiss will dissolve the silence That makes you mine Go away, oh night Go down, stars Go down, stars I'll win at dawn I will win I will win
That's what's up that's why us Italians are known for our passion and romance there's a lot of power behind those words Opera is a everyday thing in Italian familia
Here it is in English No sleep! Nessun dorma! No sleep! Nessun dorma! You too, oh Princess Tu pure, oh Principessa In your cold room Nella tua fredda stanza You look at the stars that tremble with love Guardi le stelle che tremano d'amore And of hope E di speranza But my mystery is closed in me Ma il mio mistero è chiuso in me My name no one will know Il nome mio nessun saprà No, no, on your lips I will say it No, no, sulla tua bocca lo dirò When the light will shine Quando la luce splenderà And my kiss will dissolve the silence Ed il mio bacio scioglierà il silenzio That makes you mine Che ti fa mia Go away, oh night Dilegua, oh notte Go down, stars Tramontate, stelle Go down, stars Tramontate, stelle I'll win at dawn All'alba vincerò I will win Vincerò I will win Vincerò
essun Dorma is sung in triumph, with Luciano knowing that he has guessed the princesses riddle. Some 24 princes had tried before to win the princess, only to fail. The penalty for failure is death. Luciano comes, figures out the riddle, and this is the night before he is going to present the correct answer, and thus wins the hand of the beautiful princess. Incredible power and elation,
Small correction:He had already answered her riddles correctly. She appeals to her father once more to put off the marriage...and in return, SHE must answer Callaf's, which is to find out his real name. She has basically 24 hours...and that is why just before the break of dawn, he sings of winning when the stars fade, and dawn breaks.

My dear, I realize you are new to opera and you have just listened to possibly the greatest operatic tenor who ever lived, but I want to recommend very highly that you listen to another version of this piece--and it does have English subtitles! This is Nessun Dorma sung by a young Brazilian Heavy Metal singer. I would love to know what you think. ❤️ ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8ZkFeS9milM.html
Elizabeth Curran. Although your comment was not addressed to me, I followed your recommendation. BRILLIANT! I liked it more than Pavarotti. The final vinceros were the most impressive I've heard (with perhaps the performance of Bocelli at the UEFA Euro 2020). Would respectfully suggest you play what I feel is the best female rendition (by a young girl), Amira Willighagen, a Dutch 13-year-old now living in South Africa (CIG 2017). Best wishes, JOE.
@@joepollard9476 Just listened to Amira’s Holland’s Got Talent performance-what an amazingly talented little girl! I think it was just my ear, but was she singing in the Italian? She may have substituted a couple of vowels in there but that would certainly straighten out with time. I’ll look for something more recent…👍
@@auntiethetical . Yes, O Mio Babbino was in Italian. The imperfections you mentioned were soon sorted out. Watch her singing with Andre Rieu a few months later after he gave her a master class. Her second HGT offering, I believe, was in Latin. and the final (Nessun Dorma) in Italian. This, too, improved greatly when she sung it about three years later in South Africa (CIG 2017). At 12 she sang O Sole Mio with Patrizio Buanne. She is now 19. Very recently she sang an Italian hymn, Gesu Bambino, in an empty church in the Netherlands, with her father on the organ. There is much more.
Nobody shall sleep!... Nobody shall sleep! Even you, oh Princess, in your cold room, watch the stars, that tremble with love and with hope. But my secret is hidden within me, my name no one shall know... No!...No!... On your mouth, I will tell it when the light shines. And my kiss will dissolve the silence that makes you mine!... (No one will know his name and we must, alas, die.) Vanish, o night! Set, stars! Set, stars! At dawn, I will win! I will win! I will win!

yes its part of an opera which means a story in music , its called an aria in a opera. their not songs but an aria with a story line in singing. im a classical rock fan of pink floyd, procol harem, the moody blues, the who, the animals etc and love classical music with my favourite composers like PUCCINI, VERDI, PIETRO MASCAGNI . most opera was invented by italian composers hundreds of years ago. the most beautiful music was composed by these artists. modern music now is done by the likes of MORRICONE, HORNER, WILLIAMS etc.
Welcome to the world of Opera. Pavarotti is singing in Italian. My two other singers I would put on Pavarotti's tier: Diana Damrau, Queen of the Night (aria). Jussi Bjorling (my fave song is O Helga Natt (Swedish O Holy Night). Lyrics in English are: None shall sleep, None shall sleep! Even you, oh Princess, In your cold room, Watch the stars, That tremble with love And with hope. But my secret is hidden within me, My name no one shall know, No... no... On your mouth, I will tell it, When the light shines. And my kiss will dissolve the silence that makes you mine! (No one will know his name and we must, alas, die.) Vanish, o night! Set, stars! Set, stars! At dawn, I will win! I will win! I will win!
This is not a reaction to opera. This is like reacting to pop song by listening the first 10 seconds. A tiny part taken out of context. He sings he will be challenged tomorrow and will win but you've got no idea what's that all about.
