It's why this song kills me every time I hear it now. "I'm a searchlight soul, they say -- but I can't see it in the night. I'm only faking when I get it right." Man was lifting people up with his music, but in too much pain from depression to see how he reached others.

A flame is the perfect metaphor. It's unprotected and exposed. I always felt like Chris was singing the truth, whether it was cynical, sweet, or self-destructive. I'm not sure that's even possible to sell on the radio these days, let alone in the industry as a whole. It was a unique time where the world was balanced on a fulcrum between reason and madness. In another world, a world where us Gen-Xers took control and put down the fear based regressive culture of the Boomers, maybe a guy like Chris could have survived, thrived even.

If I remember my high school years correctly, I recall an interview Chris Cornell did where he described training his voice into those higher (rock) registers by singing AC/DC covers. The fact that he could scream his way into that higher voice and still have such smoothness in the lower registers, that he could scream absolute monsters of heavy rock jams and also melt his way through the quietest acoustic ballad, has always amazed me. Truly one of the greatest voices in rock and roll. What a gift he had, and what a loss we all feel.

This is actually live, it was filmed and recorded in a studio for the single release, which is why it sounds so good! Those single shots of Chris singing to the camera or from below were done later I'm guessing, so they're not from the actual recorded performance (there's no mic in a lot of them) but who knows, being in that environment maybe helped him get in the zone, or maybe they actually did perform a take while those shots were being done! It's nice when people who know about this stuff get to have a good look at the technique that's going on

Yeah it's a different performance - the guitars aren't as distorted (and like the guy above says, not given the usual multitrack and overdub treatment) but that suits what Chris is doing, which is going between very subdued and very intense, way more than on the album take. That last "cuz I fell on" sounds mumbled and almost apologetic after the screaming that came before it - so having the guitars be a little more laid back helps with that. Also lets the drums be powerful as hell! Them hi-hats are ~crisp~

Great reaction! You will not be disappointed with Temple of the Dog! From the first notes of "Hunger Strike", I was hooked. Then, the vocals came in, and the astonishment came. Tears welledup many times throughout the song. The personal connection of the vocalists, and musicians, to the song come through so amazingly, but painfully. It's an experience you don't want to pass up, but I know that I need to be prepared for, now. As a singer, the vocal dynamics are what keep me coming back to Temple of the Dog. I was extremely fortunate to have a friend that received solo Chris Cornell tickets as a gift three times. Two were his bare bones shows, where it was just him and a type of portable phonograph that our music teachers used in the 70s. It was spellbinding! We got to hear personal interactions he had, and he showed that while he loved singing and playing guitar, he was uncomfortable with the reactions to his vocal abilities. He was just a regular guy who was capable of vocal gymnastics that thrilled, and awed the world. He is greatly missed. 💔🤘

Chris Cornell had so much soul. Unbelievably talented vocalist. Also, I know you prefer live performances, but I’d like to suggest reacting to Type O Negative - Love You To Death, the official music video. Peter Steele’s voice was absolutely captivating and highly underrated in my opinion.

You mentioned Chris Cornell with Eddie Vedder, but there are a number of live shows with Chris and Chester Bennington (Linkin Park) that are worth a look too (within this genre)

Chris is in the top 3 best rock singers of all time imo. In no order, you've got Chris Cornell, Freddie Mercury, Robert Plant. Just untouchable.

Chris' vocals are (were) so incredibly good. Every song that I have ever heard him sing draws you in with his utopian voice and you simply can't get enough. His voice is truly hypnotizing and all of his songs are incredible, but oh so short. His style is so wonderful and so unique. It is hard to recommend one song, but I love Chris while he was in Audioslave and really enjoy "Like A Stone". I think you would enjoy it also. Thank you Bethany for this analysis. I still wish I knew why his voice stirs me so, so much!

My guess is "people" recommended you first try Hunger Strike (the "duet"). My favorite Temple of the Dog song is; Say Hello 2 Heaven. It's a tribute to his friend and singer of Mother Love Bone; Andy Wood.

New sub here. Chris Cornell was one of the greatest singers ever, alongside Freddie Mercury and Ronnie James Dio, in my opinion, of course. His work with Soundgarden, Audioslave, and his solo work are all terrific. I recommend Seasons and his version of Billie Jean.

I am just so honored to be able to live with the music that has been given to us since the 60's. So many amazing artists that are still with us and that have come and gone. I truly am blessed and cannot express my gratitude and thankfulness to all of them enough. I was born in 1965 and cut my teeth on Black Sabbath when I was like 7 yrs old. My uncle Joe(RIP) had Master of Reality & I asked him to play it again and again. I've been hooked on rock and metal ever since. Everyday I miss Chris, Layne, & Scott. There tunes will be with us forever "until the end of time" & beyond. 🤘💀🤘

In 1994, during the Superunknown tour, Chris Cornell injured his voice and Soundgarden had to cancel their tour for the first time. I believe this was recorded in 1995 after he came back from his vocal injury. The cause was massive over-singing from a long worldwide tour. It changed the quality in his voice a bit. There are pro shots of Soundgarden during the 1994 tour. Chris was in a league of his own, but despite near perfect technique, singing like this too much will hurt you over time no matter what if you don't give yourself enough rest.

If you liked Chris' singing, I can't recommend his solo album Euphoria Morning enough. Completely different from the grunge/hard rock style of Soundgarden. The entire album is outstanding, but When I'm Down and Disappearing One off of that album are absolute stunners that I'd love to see you react to.

Chris and Eddie might have similar lower register voices but Chris blows Vedder away, as he does most other singers, with his lyric screaming.

Chris is the lead singer for Audioslave and Temple of the dog also along with his many solo projects. You should listen to When I'm Down and his cover of Nothing Compares 2U. He had a 4 octave range and in my opinion there was no one better. He was one of the big 4 along with Layne Staley, Kurt Cobain and Eddie Vedder from Seattle. He is very missed.

If you want a true example of Chris's talent, you MUST hear "Say Hello To Heaven" by Temple of the Dog. It's the same album as "Hunger Strike" and showcases Chris's range. In my opinion, it's his best vocal performance.

RIP Sinead O'Connor Prince wrote Nothing Compares To You. Sinead had a hit with it. Chris Cornell covered it with just strings and turned in the most amazing emotional vocal performances ever. My wife says it's one of the saddest songs she's ever heard . 🔥🔥🔥
