Her point was that he requested he go first and be dismissed early the day before, when the hearings had been scheduled for some time already. The other people in the committee were forced to wait through his turn, and he should have to do the same. His scheduling and wanting to orchestrate the entire chamber to his will is why she was upset. He was trying to flex his new power and she shot him down. That's all.
This is parliamentary procedure 101. For him leave without repercussion she MUST use the proper wording. Her refusal to specifically use the word "dismissed" was intentional and calculated. Everyone there knew it. She was playing to the cameras and her potential audience of citizens who do not have this knowledge of proper protocol.
She was trying to in trap him into walking out of the meeting. They had already been there 3.5 hrs. She wanted a walk out instead her as the leader of the committee dismissing the meeting. That way she would of been able to hold him in contempt and gone as far as to have him arrested. Really is the way the Democrats have been acting ever sense they have gotten control of the house.
Everyone: Maxine knew exactly what she was doing when she said “if you wish to leave you may leave”. Meaning if he walked out of a congressional hearing without being dismissed by the chair he would face legal ramifications. If you noticed, Steve didn’t move an inch and tried to get clarification on whether or not “he was dismissed” lol. Towards the end he was trying to get her to bang the gavel and dismiss him, which is why she made the remark that she did. And for those who didn’t watch the full hearing, he absolutely stayed the additional 15 minutes and answered the questions of a few other members of Congress. Auntie Maxine infamously again, “reclaimed her time”! I love it when DEMS are in power, we can hold people accountable and have some sort of oversight!

He can’t leave because he wasn’t properly ‘dismissed’ by the secretary. If he left, it would be considered informal/bad. The chairwoman said something like this: if he wished to leave, he may. What this doesn’t directly show is that he will get some sort of bad rep for leaving a live meeting he is expected to be in. For this guy to properly leave, the chairwoman has to dismiss him and do the thing with the gabble. He wasn’t formally dismissed(he later asked to be formally dismissed but the chairwoman told him not to instruct her to do her job) and couldn’t leave (even though he may, if he wished to do so.)or else it’d hurt the relationship between the two ppl.

My great-grandfather fought in WW1, and then both my grandfathers fought in WW2, and my grandmother was a WAVE in the NAVY at the same time.
