I decided to react to the english version of Idol from Yoasabi, after watching the first episode of Oshi no ko, now I'm regretting it 😭.
Didn't expect the best opening of the season to hit this hard, knowing everything while reading the lyrics, is definitely different.

The word "Maria" is correct for the Virgin Mary. In Japan, the Virgin Mary is commonly referred to as the Holy Mother Maria. I think it is due to the fact that it was Spanish and Portuguese missionaries belonging to the Jesuits who first introduced Christianity to Japan during the Age of Discovery. Perhaps it is a metaphor for virgin conception that the idol claims to be a virgin to her fans, even though she actually has a child.

It's also funny on how some parts of the faith refuse to say that Maria had more children later and claim that she remained Virgin her whole life, even seeing as it was very improbable.

There might be a double meaning to the name Maria. For example: Maria Goretti. She was a young saint at the age of 11 and was attacked by someone named Alessandro, who he begun to have an "impure liking" towards Maria. Few months in, there were some attempts at some.... very inappropriate acts, which lead to him stabbing Maria numerous times. Amidst these, slashes, she says “I forgive Alessandro Serenelli … and I want him with me in heaven forever.” as in, she forgives and still 'loves him' A man, who had an impure liking to someone, who later stabs her to death and despite this, she'd forgive and love him... Sound familiar?

I also like this approach, but it isn't necessarily all _that_ impressive. They're just translating everything either literally matching the meaning-even if it's sacrificing the rhymes, basic grammar and overall cohesion-or exactly matching the sounds. And the unique part is how it constantly switches between these two. It's pretty good, but I wouldn't say it's incredible

That bunny suit Ai wearing has another meaning. In Japanese,rabbit is read as"usa”,and lie is read as "uso". So wearing bunny suit on stage means wearing lie suit on stage. If you have noticed that Ai's marks on "B komachi" is a rabbit mark, that means lies. And Ai appeared on stage third times without bunny suit in vedio means she dont need wearing lie on stage. I'm Taiwanese, if the English expression is not good please forgive me. 🙏

Some things to think about: 1. Al's full name is Ai Hoshino. Her name can either be interpreted as a field of stars (including the stars in her eyes) (Ai = Eye, Hoshino = 星野 = Star field). It can also be interpreted as "desire for love" (Ai = 愛 = Love, Hoshino = Hoshiino = 欲しいの = want). The second one is very accurate to her character considering the fact that she's spent all her life wanting to love and wanting to be loved. 2. The rabbit costume represents lies. It's a mask for Ai to hide her true self, and it's also a play on words. Rabbits are called うさぎ (usagi) in Japanese. Lies are called 嘘 (Uso) and fraud is called 詐欺 (sagi). So, うさぎ = うそ + さぎ = 嘘 + 詐欺 = Lies and fraud. 3. When Ai calls herself as "Maria", she is referring to Virgin Mary. (In Japanese, Mary = マリア = Maria). She does this mainly because 1. Ruby thought she had a virgin birth (lol) 2. she's supposed to be a "pure and untainted" idol. 4. The edgy rant part is from the POV of another girl in B Komachi. The part (and whole song actually) is based off of a short novel the author wrote called "45510" which is in the POV of an anonymous member of the group. The novel talks much more than her jealously of Ai; it talks about how that other member was also a huge fan of Ai and had her own image of Ai she created in her head. She deletes both the video and blog that Ai made/wrote that showed her vulnerability because the Ai she knows is someone who is uninhibited, not dependent on anyone else, doesn't regret anything and is the strongest of all. That's why in the end of the edgy rant part, it says "完璧な君じゃ許さない / 誰より強い君以外は認めない" (I won't allow anything else but the perfect you / I won't acknowledge anyone other than the strongest you). This is her way of saying that Ai can only be the strongest Ai she knows of, which gives more depth to the other B Komachi characters, rather than having them just be shallow, jealous people.

The incredible aspect of this seemingly unnatural English translation is that it not only aligns with the sounds of the Japanese language but also with the meaning of the story. In most cases, it matches the sound of the end of the word. Furthermore, after listening to the Japanese version several times, when you listen to the English version, there are parts where it sounds like Japanese despite being in English. This part of the lyrics sounds Japanese for some reason. English「That emotion melts」→ Japan「daremoga mewo」, Eng「Completely deny」→JPN「kanpeki janai」 I also watched the music video after watching the first episode of the anime, and I was deeply moved. It's unfortunate that many people, without experiencing the original work or the anime, solely watch the music video based on its high view count, and as a result, they are unable to understand the content and miss out on the emotional impact, ending up with little to no reaction to the video. Please also inform those people that they are missing out on a wonderful experience of being deeply moved.

The second verse is basically ripped from the Oshi no Ko short story 45510. It’s from the perspective of one of the other members of B Komachi.

Thank you for the video, even though it's an English song, even a Japanese person like me can hear the same pronunciation as the Japanese lyrics. I think I chose a word that sounded similar to the original meaning. As an example, it is interesting that the important word "I love you" in Japanese is pronounced as "ai-shi-teru" in its original meaning. In this case, the English "i" refers to oneself, while the Japanese "ai" means "love."

There is a short story which was released with ep 1 along side with the Opening, it is only a couple of pages long, which you should give a read and maybe listen to the song once more which I know you will be listening to regardless but also go through the lyrics again as there are a lot of Easter eggs in that short story too and fleshes out Ai a bit more and gives her more depth and complexity. And yes at 15:41 the song refers to the virgin Mary, if you remember from the ep one when Ai listens in on ruby saying that there can not a father as most probably it was a virgin conception, the song is basically hinting at that. Another tit bit of information at the end Aqua and Ruby are looking at the screen and most probably hinting at again from the first episode at the end Ai had made a recording which she left for them to see, which they are at the end of the opening is what is assumed. Most of us would highly recommend you give it a read and would love to hear your thoughts on that too and maybe add it to your next ep reaction.

I believe the name was not changed also because japanese christian people say Maria, the name is not adaptad from it's origin, so, singing fron the pov of Ai she would have called herself Maria not Mary :)

Also here's a fact about Ai. You can know if ai is lying, when her pupils grow wider or they shine more, and when she's telling the truth. Her pupils sometimes disappears or darkens. Since in the first episode where ai said her last words where she said i love you to ruby and aqua and that she's relieved that it wasn't a lie. Her pupils disappears. (Idk if its true or not. It's just my theory :3)

Semi-sad fact: Ai Hoshino's stabbing and death is actually based on a real stabbing of an idol, it's a semi-sad fact because where Ai Hoshino died in the anime, the idol in real life at least survived, but is understandably permanently scarred both physically and mentally from this. It happened back in 2016, apparently.

ture, that part is from the short noval "45510" which wrote by aka akasaka. spoilers alert: . . . 45510 is talking about a post members of B-komachi find out the old blog maintain by the members where the idols group just form. there is an draft post worte by Ai talking about her mental weakness. which the members working with Ai those years dont think Ai will show weakness to anybody. that is not the most ultimate idol who beat them all will do. so, she decided to deleted the blog to hide the truth.

Maria is a symbol of purity, so pure God let her have his Son. So Ai being an Idol is trying to give this image of purity too, Idols aren't allowed to have partners, relationships or anything, they are sold as pure virgins to their fans.

You forgot ONE more point of view Mr Jhulian R....that of the darkest sound, the darkest of dark in that anime/song - the stalker....those were his words/thoughts about Ai. In the same sense the music sound darker and dangerous. Different from the b-komachi band mates view, which only was jelously sounding T_T
