MLB Network debuts “Heart of a Hero,” a feature on Lou Gehrig’s iconic career and legacy. It is narrated by Nancy Frates, the mother of the late Pete Frates, a former captain of the Boston College baseball team, who passed away from ALS in 2019 at 34 years old.

I remember my grandfather told me stories about Lou Gehrig and the other great baseball players that he watched during those years. Thoughn he would teasingly call the baseball players of my generation "a bunch of stiffs," I think he was trying to make his point that the players of his generation played for the love of the game. I believe Lou Gehrig's story isn't limited to how impressive he was in baseball, but also how his appreciation for the simplicities in life inspired others--the latter definitely inspires me on my dark days. Rest in peace, Lou Gehrig; you are missed and fondly remembered.

My favorite sports Legend ever that I didnt witness play. He is some how underrated and if his career didn't sadly get cut short he would have had a very realistic shot at being the all time RBI and runs leader and 3,000 plus hits and defiantely the 500 home run club. For his whole career hit .336 with RISP, .317 with two outs and RISP and. 349 in late and close games and .361 in the WS. Rest in peace Lou Gehrig. I commented this on another video today but will paste it hear as well because more people need to realize the force this man was because most people know he is an all time great but don't really actually know how good Lou was.

I don't believe that Lou Gehrig was underrated. This might sound flippant but he wasn't called "The Iron Horse" for nothing. You provided his statistics that proves his abilities which are definitely impressive and not to be ignored. Also Lou's holding 2nd place in playing 2,130 consecutive days streak is nothing to sneeze at--he held first place for over 50 years until Carl Ripken Jr. passed it in 1995. Like I said, I don't believe that Lou was at all underrated. Anyone who does probably hasn't been educated about his legacy and his impact on others.

@@glamgal7106 He is underrated because in spite of his incredible numbers, he is rarely if ever mentioned with the other all time greats.

Why in the world did no one keep a recording of his speech? There were three different cameramen and at least two radio stations during the speech, and not one of them kept the entire speech for posterity. I texted this to Jonathon Eig when his book on Lou came out, and he had no answer for it, other than he hopes that someone in the crowd recorded it and kept it in a drawer or attic or somewhere, like the video of Babe Ruth's 1932 WS homer.

Lou Gehrig is my all time favorite baseball player even though he died many years before I was born. He was more than one of the greatest players in the history, he was also a loving son, husband, and a wonderful role model to so many kids AND when asked by a sports writer in the late 1930s lf blacks should be allowed to play in the major leagues answered "Yes of course, if they are good enough , then they should be allowed to play. Why not?" (Something a lot of people dont know about him) he was humble and grateful and moral person with one major vice, he smoked alot and I can tell you there is a strong correlation between ALS and smoking. One more big reason not to smoke,

Still the greatest first baseman ever. Just think how long his streak would have extended if he hadn't gotten the illness that later bore his name. Ripken would have been second. Amazing to contemplate.
