What should you look out for when choosing a Heart Rate Monitor to use with your rowing machine? In this video, I cover just that.
From chest straps to sports watches, what to look out for, how to best use them and how to connect them to your Concept 2, Skillrow, Rp3 or Water Rower. (Most detail is about Concept2)
An update since making this video - if you want to use your Apple Watch, you can connect to a bit of kit from npe-inc.com/he... which will then output the info via ANT+ to your monitor.

“[if the strap is] too loose, it’ll fall down to your stomach mid row.” Not for me! Finally, I’ve found an advantage to being out of shape, lol. But seriously, thanks, John, for all the great advice - hopefully in the near future, I _will_ face this problem!

Haha. What'll (hopefully) be weird is over time, if you do get trimmer, needing to tighten it up every few rows. No need for scales when you've got a cinch around your chest!

You're right, I need to update this video. My current recommendations are: 1) Budget - Coospo (A great HR monitor if you don't need the data saved to the strap) 2) Premium POLAR H9 - you don't get anything more from it that the Coospo however 3) Super premium - MyZone Switch, which has the added avantage of saving the data to the sensor, so you don't need to take your phone with you. The Polar H10 also does this, but I like the Switch for its options to attach to wrist, chest or upper arm. 4) Watches - This is still "Your mileage will vary". The Apple Watch was rock solid for me. My Garmin Epix Pro is a little weird when I start a row, but then settles down. And as long as your watch/strap has bluetooth communication (check if you're using the Apple Watch) then they'll work with the C2 and should work with the peloton.

I'm running Polar OH1 with my Concept2 works very well for me.

Yeah, like I said - they're a valid option. Some people have issues with them - but most of the time, with the OH1 - it's down to it moving around too much.

Very well done. I agree with your observation between chest or wrist sensor. I’ve used a monitor from the beginning. PM2 with the attached sensor. Had an interesting experience once when I had gotten a new Polar with a watch for gym use. That strap and the C2 sensor were not compatible, it gave a much higher reading. Had to only use the original strap. Upgrading to the PM5 has been an amazing improvement. I was expecting a hash tag at the end.

Glad it was helpful! And that’s very kind to use the link. HR training is interesting. Best to pick how you use it and stick to it. I use it more as a recovery marker than an exertion control. But it can work great for that purpose too.

Not a video to Rowalong to. :) More great information. Thank you John. I personally have found that my Polar OH1 is very reliable when compared to my Polar Heartrate chest strap. I have tested it comparing the chest strap to OH 1 worn on forearm/bicep and I have even tucked the sensor under my head band at my temple ( it is designed to be used there in a special holder for swimming. The differences are so minor that I prefer to wear it compared to my chest strap since I have in the past had to occasionally adjust the chest strap and never notice the OH1. I now wear only the OH1 under my headbands and love it. I forget its there and it hasn’t yet let me down. I will say the chest strap is slightly more accurate and faster (by maybe a second) to pick up but not enough to effect performance as I measure it. I saw a comment about moving the chest strap sensor because they hit it with the rowing handle. Yes I would agree moving a bit to the left where the pick up is right over the left side of the heart (the left ventricle makes up most of the mass of the heart and the sensor will get great pick up there). I suspect moving to the right side would be ok but anatomy tells me maybe less reliable as you move further from the mass of the heart (try to place the sensor between your ribs wherever you place it). On your back on the left side will probably work but as well I would suggest staying off the shoulder blade go just below it. (ECG leads are placed there for some views of the heart voltage output). I got some great info on integrating with various devices. Thanx

And thanks for the added info. Like I said, it’s definitely a good alternative - just some folks still reporting issues with it. But then like lots of things, you often only hear from the people who don’t like things!

Ive found that wrist HRM go goofy while rowing. I got a larger strap and wear it above my bicep-works great. Also i wear a sweat band over my garmin watch.

My Garmin is a little twitchy with rowing, as is the Myzone. Ironically, my Apple Watch was always spot on. And I got rid of it! Doh…

Thanks for the info John. I use the Polar chest heart rate monitor. No issues with it. Lately I have used it to practice some biofeedback during your 30 min rate 20 steady state rows. As my heart rate starts to climb, I really try to concentrate on relaxation and efficient breathing techniques. By doing this I find I can lower my heart rate a point or two. At least for a while. Just another use of monitoring heart rate to improve performance and efficiency.

Interesting you mention that. I was thinking about this after recording the lastest video (4 x 10mins) which will be online soon. I wonder how much my heart rate increases just because I'm more focussed on talking to 'you' in the videos, and not concentrating on relaxing. I guess the only way to check this is to do the session again, and just do it for me instead of a RowAlong. But that feels like I'm cheating on you!

I've been using a Garmin HRM1G chest strap on a Concept 2 PM5 for about a year and it's been great. About £25 or so but not sure how available they are now. Ebay may be a good option.

John, I have a question about the chest straps. Do you have a favorite Iphone App that pairs with the chest strap for when you're not rowing? I try to rotate exercises, and while it's nice to have the HR up on the C2 monitor, when I'm using the eliptical (many at the gym have broken HR monitors) I can't check while I'm exercising. I have heard about the watches being finicky, so I would prefer to have the phone on the machine with a constant HR. TIA!

NK chest strap can be used with the PM5 too. Some issues in the connection though!

Thanks Erich - to be honest, if I were to list every available strap that would connect, I would have spent a LONG time just listing products - hence the "Pretty much anything that broadcasts Bluetooth will work" line - a cop-out catch all. That said, I'll check outthe NK - just to see what it's like - and maybe add it to the list in the description.

Thanks for sharing 👍 I first tried the Garmin dual Hrm. But the hook closure on the garmin strap sits right on the lats where there's a lot of movement when rowing -so it gives me a skin rash when i row for more than 30 minutes. I'm now trying out the Waoo TickrX where the closure is at the front -so no plastic closure placed on the lats, and therefore no skin rash -but the measurements are quite inconsistent and inacurate compared to the Garmin strap. How is your experience with the polar straps -do the closure irritate the skin?

Hi John thanks for this video. I bought a Polar HRM around 25 yrs. ago, it was basic and cost well over £300. I bought a smart watch almost the same price as my original Polar; I soon went back to Polar. I was pleased that your advice matched my thoughts on the subject. I do have a couple of questions. I am 72 yrs. old and for many years I trained at a set HR average for zones and intervals. But even the C2 PM’s only gave the last recorded HR for each interval and not the average, what’s more the final workout average only uses the last intervals HR recorded for its ‘average’. So I used a watch which shows a continuous Average HR. It seems they are hard to find now. Do you know of a HR watch which, shows a continuous HR average?
@rowalong
@rowalong 2 года назад
There are a few out there - I know the Athlytic Athlete app for Apple Watch gives you an average HR at the end. And Polar Beat does too. Both iPhone apps. Athlytic needs and Apple Watch - Polar needs something like an H7 / H10 etc and a phone. I hope this helps?

Great video John ; thanks ! Quick question : since you 're like me and hit the chest strap sensor when rowing, have you tried to just put it on the side a bit (heart side obviously...) and row ? Wonder if it has the same accuracy a bit sideways...
@rowalong
@rowalong 3 года назад
Ah! Balls!!! That's a tip I should have added in there!! Yes, I'd swing the sensor over a bit to the side for this very reason. I have also tried wearing it on my back instead - but I don't find that it picks up the signal well enough back there. A few inches to the left though - and it works perfectly, without danger of being bashed to death!!
@marcmartineau7858
@marcmartineau7858 3 года назад
@@rowalong Thanks John ! I'll give it a sot. I recently bought the Polar OH1 for that specific reason and find that the HR is a bit lower than it should be compare to the Wahoo TICKR. I wear it on the biceps at the junction of the bi-tri where there's less tissue to go through, but still. I'll try both at the same time to compare, and the TICKR sideways ! 😉
@rowalong
@rowalong 3 года назад
@@marcmartineau7858 - yeah, that's one of the things I hear about the OH1 - is that unlike my WHOOP which reads to high, if you get the OH1 in the wrong place, it'll read too low. It'll be interesting to compare the Tickr with the OH1 though.
@marcmartineau7858
@marcmartineau7858 3 года назад
Exactly. I found that the best place for the OH1 is the upper arm, not the forearm while rowing and skierging. I just got the BikeErg yesterday and did my first workout on it. I compared the OH1 with the manual HR reading and it was spot on all the time. I did at least 10 measurements and I was surprised on how accurate it is, compare to the wrist manual reading. But, as I said, it has to be well placed on the upper arm between the tri and bi, and not to tight ! Also, the latest firmware helped for the measurement consistency and the Bluetooth connection.
@rowalong

@@marcmartineau7858 - I'll take that advice for the WHOOP when I get the bicep strap then. Thanks!
