The last of five behind-the-scenes reports about Heartbeat, shown on ITV's This Morning on Friday 11/09/1998. Claudia Winkleman considers the shocking crime figures in the fictional village of Aidensfield, everything from muggings and bank robberies to alien abductions. She's also keen to get a walk-on role in a 1960s party scene and takes acting tips from stars Jason Durr, Philip Franks and Tricia Penrose.

Shame they never repeat any of the earlier Greengrass and Nick Berry series, can't bare the later series with Bernie, Vernon and David, they went overboard with the comedy and silliness. Wasn't just those 3 characters (plus that awful Peggy) that ruined it for me, Mike Bradley was a decent character but after he left none of rhe constables that came after were remotely memorable. They probably only show those later series on ITV3 because it's a freeview channel and just give us the rubbish episodes lol. I believe they did show the earlier series on ITV Encore (no idea if it's still going, probably noone subscribed to it) a few years ago, but as far as terrestrial UK freeview goes they've never shown them. UKGold once showed the earlier series but this was in the late 90s/early 2000s. I have some UKGold recordings of the first and second series but they have cuts in them.

@@Colsoloact-po9wv Also, I wish there was more home video recordings of the filming of the episodes from the earlier series as I love that kind of stuff. I've only come across two from the Nick Rowan series, one from the filming of the episode from series 5 where Kate dies filmed at the village shops showing Greengrass. The other video shows Nick, Jo and Maggie Bolton outside the church, and some evening filming outside the Aidensfield Arms filmed in August 1997 which was for the Christmas 1997 special. There must've been alot more recorded from peoples camcorders, just a pity the owner of the videos never upload them. I will have to try and upload the home video recording I have where they were filming at the police house in Askwith nr Otley in June 1996. The only time we ever manage to get to see filming of the earlier series.

Hhmm, I don't remember this, though I have a feeling I do recall seeing something like it on a daytime TV programme. Strange thing is that I havnt got it on tape which is odd because I recorded quite a few Heartbeat related stuff and interviews with various cast members around the late 90s, including Bill Maynard, Nick Berry, Mark Jordan, Derek Fowlds, etc, but this wasn't one of them. I have interviews with Maynard and Berry on GMTV, and Nick Berry live at the police house in 1996 with Juliette Gruber (Jo Weston), and one of Bill Maynard talking on the Paul Ross Show. At first I thought this was from a DVD extra; looks rather too good to be from a VHS recording off TV. Wish they would put these rare behind the scenes stuff on the DVDs.

Hello - and thanks for your interest. It isn't from a VHS off-air recording. It's from a Betamax SP dub of the programme insert roll that I made at the time of cutting this VT. So it's in TX quality, albeit in SD.

Great show but it wasn't always great IMO as it had its ups and down's. Hard to say which series of Heartbeat was the best, but I do think the show started to go downhill somewhat after Nick left, and even when Greengrass was still in it it felt more of a part drama part comedy show with more and more silliness, cliched 1960s themes and fashions and characters being added to the storylines. It's ashame so many fans seem to love the later series from series 10 onwards as I thought they were awful and not a patch on what HB was originally, which was a police/doctor medical drama set in a North Yorkshire village that had some quite dark ad gritty storylines but some humour that wasn't OTT. Some of the earlier characters from the Nick Berry years seem to get forgotten about, like George Ward Gina's uncle, and the man who originally ran and owned the petrol station/garage Mostyn which later became Scripps. Mention the name Mostyn having owned the garage and most people wouldn't know what you are talking about. Never liked Craddock has he just felt like a comedy character even when he was acting serious, whereas Blaketon had that mean and serious look but at other times his wit and humour (particularly with Greengrass and Ventress) was hilarious and had me in stiches many times. And I can't remember the sgts that came after Craddock as I felt they were boring and forgettable. PC Crane had the boyish good looks but he was dull and had no real charisma, whereas Bradley did because he was good with the women. The rest of the constables who replaced Crane looked like they didn't want to be there.

You have a point i already had the feeling when Kate Rowan left and not long after that nick left and blaketon became a bartender it wasnt quite the same but greengrass would probably have stayed if he hadnt had a third stroke in real life but after he left i think they were trying to modernise it even if it was set in the 60s (even though i have nothing against him) i think by bringing in onslow was a mistake i felt they took him in because he was the most famous and funny from his time in "keeping up appearances" but no one could replace greengrass the cosyness of the village and the characters were gone in the early episodes you felt very close to the characters but more and more actors came and went too fast so you didnt feel that close to the people anymore i stayed on after series 10 but that was more because of Gina, bellami, ventress, blaketon who stayed until the last episode but also cause they were there from the start almost

@@martinkristensen8398 Yeah I agree, Geoffrey Hughes who played Vernon was a mistake, too much of a comedy character that you couldn't take seriously, and using David has his dogs body and turning him into a laughing stock made it worse; the storylines around those two where just cringy. It's strange that Vernon and Bernie disappeared towards the end of series 17 before the show finished for good. I'm surprised Tricia Penrose stayed in it right until the end, gotta to be the money and nothing else unless she really loved playing the part. Mark Jordon didn't leave of his own accord but was written out apparently. Yeah the earlier series did feel like more of community where you knew everyone and cared for them. I think making too many episodes per series is a bad thing. It's strange that from about series 8 they went from 24 episodes then by series 13 they made 25. Why make just one extra episode is abit weird to me.

@@Embracing01 yeah there was another thing people forgot in the early episodes blaketon had a son and was divorced but they never followed up on that story which i find strange but i think there was another thing too i think. early on it was very successful in Britain and made by Britain . because of the popularity it went global and thats where things changed
