The smoke out the exhaust is fuel smoke, it’s running rich as hell, it’s black smoke. Oil smoke is blue and stinks.

guess it wasn't just me that said not to grease the release bearing......two pet hates I have if someone drives my vehicles, sitting at a junction with the clutch pedal pressed down, as it means that the release bearing is spinning, it's only meant to be pressed to change gear, so will wear out if pressed for a long time, in fact get hot, second pet hate is people sitting without applying the hand brake, but applying foot brakes, on discs it will mean that most of the disc cools, but the bit with the pads applied will not and lead to warping in the long term, grumpy git that I am!!!!

That was fuel smoke coming out of the exhaust, just my opinion but I think you have a bit of bore wash going on there which has damaged the rings. Get to the bottom of the problem now otherwise a replacement engine will go the same way...

Hi mate , could you not go old school and take it to a garage and put emission tester on it and see how rich it’s running ? Maybe coolant sensor is at fault thus sending more fuel causing bore wash as others said need to find the problem now otherwise it’s going to happen with the replacement engine , hope you get to the bottom of the problem mate soon it won’t beat you just a bit of patience, keep up the great work on Heidi ❤

Thanks for the advice mate! 👍 I did have a problem before with the coolant sensor plug coming off the sensor. The readout seemed normal when I plugged the laptop in during this video) but who knows what it was doing when we did the smoke test launch. I can usually notice a serious dip in power when the coolant sensor problem occurs though. 🤔 Defo need to solve this issue before I change the lump.

Definitely overfuelling and bore wash, agree with the others saying this. Black smoke on acceleration a no no. Vvt or cam sensor unlikely to blame, probably the rolling road setup. New rings and hone may be ok, but bearings can also suffer as petrol gets in the oil. (I've a ST170 in an Elan)

The cam sensor m8 controls the timing of the spark via the cam lobe strobe A failing camshaft position sensor begins losing its ability to quickly transfer data. Mismatched fuel delivery and ignition timing, even if off by a few milliseconds, will cause your vehicle to sputter, accelerate poorly, lack power, stall or even shut off.
@marcushayesford
@marcushayesford 3 месяца назад
Thanks for the advice mate. 👍 Im pretty sure my setup uses the crank sensor to control the spark timing. There are 2 settings for the fuel delivery though (batch and sequential) Batch doesn't need a cam sensor but sequential does. So if the ECU is set to sequential (ill check next time I'm at the garage) then MAYBE the issue Iv been having (potentially) with the cam sensor could also be the cause of messing with the fuelling and causing bore wash etc???? Who knows if any of that os correct but its something to think about. Defo need to solve the issue to avoid ruining the next engine though. Maybe it would be safer to set it up with batch fuelling in future anyway???
@robrs210
@robrs210 3 месяца назад
Sorry but the cam position sensor doesn’t control and spark. It’s there to measure the cam angle for vct control. It will depend on the ecu type if it has closed loop control for the cam advance/retard. If you run closed loom the cam sensor is important. The st170 should run a closed loop vct due the type of control over the cam movement. It’s not the same as other vvt’s which are on/off. The st170 is variable and needs to be used like that to get the best power curve

The that made me most sceptical about greasing a clutch bearing is: The bearing spins, that grease is surely going to get flung around inside the bell-housing possibly contaminating the friction surfaces? I fear the same thing with melted copper grease around modern braking systems. I'm not using that stuff anymore, better off just keeping the moving parts clean of brake dust and grime, I reckon.

As you know the bearing is sealed for life with lubricant already inside and no additional grease is required. I do sparingly lube the splines and release arm pivot but that's usually it. O2 sensor etc. could be bore wash and now glazed walls rings which can be sorted with a hone and rings as long as the bores are still good. If he had adjusted the linkage or something similar for example and then it started running rough then you’d be onto something, but throttle bodies unlike carbs will usually hold “ tune” indefinitely until something is physically disturbed or something else in the fuel system fails or the stand alone ecu is touched/adjusted etc👍 I’m in no way saying you are defo wrong though as we dunno what may have been touched and when and it could even in an extreme and wild case be a contributing factor to differences between compression in cylinders 👍

@@marcushayesford the Ecu, is reading the signals from all the sensors, for instance the tps. Camshaft Crankshaft sensors, as well as measuring the air volume, fuel usage, and engine temp, each sensor has its own optimal range and if one is reading above its maximum permissible range but the rest are within spec the ecu will adjust to bring it in line but because the compression is low the ecu knows that there is something wrong so it adjusts, to compensate ie fuel consumption will increase, obviously it’s more complicated than that but basically the ecu knows that the engine is using more air, fuel, for what revolutions the engine is spinning at so it pumps more fuel in, hence the black smoke which is exasperating the bore wash, a simple rebore and oversized pistons and rings would do the job, or just a new bottom end

The thing is my setup is simpler than a lot of setups (I’m not fully utilising all the features of my ECU) I dont have a lambda sensor or anything like that so the fuelling isn’t self adjusting. I have experienced before that it will dump loads of extra fuel in when the coolant sensor is faulty BUT that was reading fine when I plugged it in during this video. There’s defo something going on with the ECU or the sensors, or the wiring. I’ve got a few things I need to systematically work through checking, and I’m planning to get Cat to come for a spin with me again and keep an eye on the laptop whilst I’m actually driving. 👍

@@marcushayesford I get that mate, because the engine is working harder the ecu will know at say 2000rpm the tps sensor should be, say at a quarter of its range, but because you’re having to put more throttle one because of the low compression the TPs is over its allowed range, compared to what the cam, and crankshaft sensors are reporting back to the ecu, the ecu can see that one (the TPs ) these three sensors are above The readings what it should be at, the ecu knows that there is an issue and will adjust to compensate obviously it doesn’t know that the compression is low it just knows that there is a problem and it uses the measurement it receives from the sensors and compares them to what they should be and compensates for the difference

Just an idea if you checked the valve clearance when it's hot then compression tester and it's hot

When I reset the valve clearances I checked it when the engine was hot. I also always do compression tests when the engine is hot. 👍

Try a comp test on maude mate to compare 👍 Also you could try a slightly more viscous oil that could help slightly . Also drain some oil out the catch can see if its thin or smells of fuel etc that would suggest borewash as others have mentioned. I used to get oil in my catch can sometimes but changed to a thicker oil now its fine .🫡
