The creator decided to make Sam deaf, because he wanted to put the same distance between Sam and Henry, that Ellie and Joel had with their communication skills. They thought "silence" would have created a sort of distance, that would have made the atmosphere between the two characters much more intimate (them caring about each other and breaking the language barrier with the sign language). The child actor who plays Sam is really deaf, just to specify. Sam being younger than his game self, is because they wanted to make Ellie feel the responsibility of taking care of someone (the way Joel is doing with her) and for Sam to kind of have a "parental figure" outside of his brother. He helped Ellie grow and understand that she really wants to save people, because she doesn't want anyone to go through what Sam went through. In her mind she failed him (both with her blood and with her falling asleep).
Yeah, Joel said to Henry earlier that it's probably easier for kids the next day because they don't have anyone relying on them. But then when Sam revealed to Ellie that he was bitten, that now placed her in a position of someone relying on her...And it's why after failing to keep her promise and failing to cure Sam with her blood, she now feels that heavy burden and responsibility. It hardened her and a bit of her innocence was lost 🥺
@@lalalalisa41 Right I feel like that would break everyone a little. Especially since Sam was such a good and innocent kid. Seeing kids suffering hits extremely hard.
They thought she was a good leader, but she really wasn't. Was driven on emotions rather than logic. Good leaders make peace when needed to for the sake of mankind. Bad leaders are set to destroy the whole world cause it was always about themselves than their people.
Loved your reaction. I cried so hard at this episode and episode 3. Apparently, it's just like the games, except Sam being deaf. As a disabled and hard-of-hearing person, I really appreciated the representation. It was ironic that Kathleen was killed by that child clicker after she talked about kids dying all the time so heartlessly.
@Boombre What? I almost never cry (even at real life stuff that definitely should make me cry), and episode 3 destroyed me. I don't know a single queer person (except you, apparently) who wasn't incredibly moved by it. I have a degenerative neuromuscular disease like Frank does, so that probably contributed to my heartbreak. Plus, Sam and Henry's story in this is so tragic. I am a disabled person who is also hard-of-hearing, so I appreciated the representation in this episode too.

I don’t know why but I started watching reaction videos for this show specifically and I now have short list of my favorites. You two have one of my most favorite channels, and on this episode it was a lot of fun to get your take on Kathleen. You might be the only ones to have had so much positive things to say about her (even while recognizing her black heart), and it was so refreshing. Thank you ladies :)
lol I was surprised. Kathleen was the biggest of all villains. It was her rage and ego and irresponsibility that led to not just her own death, but the death of her own people, and her own city. They overtook Fedra just to become them, and now they're all doom and will soon be wipeout by infected cause this psycho Karen went full Karen on everyone.
she is very human and not romanticized as a villan, although she did get a poetic ending with the child clicker. it's interesting how they showed how tunnel visioned she was until the end, even w the clickers all around her, she only cared about getting revenge. she didn't care about the clickers underground, she made terrible decisions throughout, she is erratic etc. bc she was never supposed to be a leader, but having people follow her was essential to avenge her brother. i hated her but i like the show's take on her character.
30:41 You are right. In the game it takes a long time to kill. It is basically a boss monster. And yes, being constantly on the move hitting it with heavy hitting missile weapons is the way to take it out.
This episode, like several others, makes me cry again even during reactions. Great reaction, even rewatching it I never noticed how maturely Ellie dealt with it cause I was just a mess emotionally 😂 It even seems like she has more distance in her eyes when she looks at Joel cause this has just hardened her even more. So much trauma 😢

@Jyn x Ryl, 2:41 do you remember that smoldering pile of bodies last week that Joel and Ellie past by while entering the city? Well, that was these folks. Yikes! 23:18 The big infected is called a Bloater. IMO, they were scarier in the game since they throw spores at you and spores can make you infected. They got rid of spores in the live-action version of the story as an airborne infection would have killed off humanity long before this story started. I still think they did the Bloater justice in this adaptation, just that projectile attacks are something this version doesn't have, so you can put distance between yourself and it. 24:04 This version of this story is so much worse than the game--Sam kept his bite to himself in the game. Ellie knew! And she didn't tell anyone!!! We know the full Cordyceps infection timetable thanks to the poster in the hospital in the Boston QZ: -bites to the neck, head and face: 5 to 15 minutes -bites to the torso, shoulder, arm and hand 2 to 8 hours -bites to the leg and foot: 12 to 24 hours The poster next to that one told us the symptoms to look out for too: -coughing -slurred speech -muscle spasms -mood change Sam couldn't speak, but his conduct with Ellie showed known of these signs and aside from his concern, he looked very much in control of his body at this point. We saw at least three amputees in the first episode in the Boston QZ, so we know amputation works!! Sam might have still died, given the fact that they are a 20-year-old, dirty hotel room and lack the proper tools and medicine for amputation, but considering the circumstances, he still had a shot of not turning had they amputated his leg. At the very least, Henry could have had more time with Sam and he likely wouldn't have felt like a failure and that might have made the difference, the thing to prevent him from taking his own life ='( Be it the game or live-action, this part of the story, hurts just as much as losing Sarah did ='(
Just to be come the Isis of Kansas City, now the whole city is gonna be wiped out because of her rage. I didn't get her cast in the 4th episode, but now the show did it on purpose to portray her like how everyone reacted to her after episode 5. She was soft spoken, but unhinged which can be even more dangerous. She set out to seek and destroy not just Henry and Sam, but her own people and her own city. If the infected were not going to wipe out Kansas City, she would probably seek to destroy the rest of America and burn everything else down around her.
1st of all her men and brother that attacked Joel and Ellie, so what did she expect? Kill or be killed, us or them, the rules always been the same, ain't no other way
Her brother was killed before they ran into Joel, but yeah, kinda weird to me someone would have sympathy for this psycho Karen. She killed her men and the whole city after taking down Fedra. She's like worse than Hitler. She'd burn children alive if given the chance. Her men were probably worse than Fedra. They seem like the Isis of Kansas City.

Actually the big one guy is kinda possible considering the whole thing about cordyceps infection. That thing happens in insects and other animals in nature when the infection take you for a long time. The thing is that when it happens most of the case the host is already dead, and in the last of us the Bloater is the actual fungus in control of the human body And the clicker who killed Kathleen was an actual kid. So ironic!
Kathleen, I stopped seeing a woman hurting almost as I started to watch the episode, I saw a woman who wanted revenge for her. Yeah yeah in her mind and others like Perry the excuse to do evil was her brother. Kathleen is like Henry? Do you really think Kathleen is that good of a person to would kill herself after killing Henry and the other two children?, a person with a dark heart doesn't do that. She was looking for an excuse for her and to inspire pitty "my brother was so beautiful...", and yet loved him so much, that she didn't respect his last wish, he probably knew too what Henry was about to do. Henry instead was "I am a bad person because I did a bad person thing" With pain, she could've just killed Henry, i could've understood that, but no, she had to make that cruel speech "Kids die all the time... that happens when you f.. with faith, etc" You don't have to say something, just because is logic or true. And also sounds like her brother told her, she knew that the boy had leukemia. And that other poor little girl clicker killed her, oops! Her bother knew the danger that like or not, Fedra was controlling. He was coping with them somehow. Despite what they say, I don't know how bad FEDRA really was, in comparison to others, because their celebration of "freedom" was terrible and it lasted what? 12-13 days? I know what Henry said, but Henry is the type of person to create some sort of an excuse for them What I see, is that with a problem like this (apocalypse) is very easy to confuse people obligated to do bad things with really bad people. Henry couldn't even kill a fly, she killed the doctor and all those other people that she knew circumstances obligated them (most at least) to become collaborators, so easily.
