The Lost Reels are a reprise for Echoes of the Eye. When I wrote Outer Wilds - Reprise, I wanted to share my memories of the game as a drifting emotion - a fainting thought that could have been lost in a signal further than ever in the distance
When I finished writing the music for Echoes, these characters felt like friends that I’d never see again. It has been a wonderful experience to enter their world again and revisit them. Lost Reels jumps head-first into the Outer Wilds idea of an existential awakening, as well as the alternative Echoes of the Eye touches on - a descent into madness.
The most exciting thing for me to think about was, “What if the Outer Wilds universe was real and we heard an alien Voyager sending out their own Golden Record message as signals found deep in space? How would we translate them and how could we connect with their melodies as a reflection on our own lives if we are already living them? The new compositions are a reminiscence of everything that Outer Wilds and the community has meant to me.

While I hear this I visualize a camera showing the village in Timber Hearth, occasionally glitching out, and that after a while zooms out from the planet and reveals we've been looking at that giant screen on the inside of the Stranger, showing the outside world to its dead inhabitants. It's an uncomfortable transition between the carefree nature of the Hearthians and the tragedy of the Stranger's inhabitants.

Ooooh, and as the camera moves far enough for a second you can see the rgb matrix to mark the transition. I hope someone will make an animatic of of that

I had a similar feeling but I interpreted it as more of a horrific retelling of the Hearthians. Their wooden technology isn't much different from the wooden ship that the Strangers sport. If they'd been left to their own devices, would they have eventually torn their world apart to build a ship capable of interstellar travel in the same way? The music definitely intends to draw the parallel between the Hearthians and Strangers, and how they really aren't too different from one another.

To me this sounds like a musical representation of an alternate timeline where the Hatchling cant accept the destruction of their world, falls victim to the same form of denial and escapism as the Owlelks and so takes all the Hearthians onto The Stranger and creates a new simulation of Timber Hearth which has since been consumed by the supernova, 0:18 - 2:08 being "Elegy for Timber Hearth"

Hatchling going back to Hal with growing piles of notes for years' worth of loops until they're literate in Owlk; getting increasingly demanding to Gabbro, forcing them to come and help.

One of the others endings you can get where You take out the warp core, and die while going into the simulation is an ending where this music can work. Because the Hatchling goes through the exact same things that the Owlks go through.

*From a journal found inside the sealed vault...* I've always wondered about the worlds that exist beyond our solar system and the other species that could be out there. If we weren't so afraid of change and discovery, I think we could've made contact with some. Instead of spending the end of our days in terror and desperation, we'd be fully engrossed by the knowledge of another culture, exchanging ideas and technology. We'd experience new terrain and explore new planetary bodies, potentially learning of new phenomenon. We may even learn more about whatever this thing is that calls to us. After turning off the signal blocker, I saw fury in the eyes of people I wasn't expecting. I was restrained by people I considered friends, and some spat in my face. I was hauled away by men I respected. I saw my family as I was hauled into this tomb. I saw the fear in their faces. Looking back, I wasn't too sure if they were scared of me or of the people I had left them with. Everything in here is dark. The little hope I have... It's starting to fade away. It's dying, like a star going supernova.

@@MrAstroGuy I'm pretty sure it isn't as to the fact we can't translate the text of the owlk (and in pretty sure the only thing in the vault is the corpse of the prisoner). Still a very neat comment none the less.

I love that, for a song about the (planet of the) Hearthians and their geological naming scheme, the randomly-generated URL starts with 'ROCdk', which is very nearly the word 'rock'. Also appropriate because this rocks!

All the music in this playlist is great. But for some reason listening to this music makes me feel like I should have never been here, as though I somehow Fell down a hidden unintended path by the algorithm to make it here. I Guess That's Why They Call It "The Lost Reels".

AHhhhhhhhh!!!! This is so good. To me, it represents the story of someone who was just a hatchling leaving their home and thinking that they were going to be the next space explorer for future generations to admire like they admired everyone else before them. How they discovered something terrible that they couldn't escape. Something that allowed them to discover darker and darker stories of the past. TLDR The Timber Hearth theme and improv being flipped on its head and turned into Into Shadow was a wonderful thing and made me very emotional and cry 😭😭😭

If you've not already gotten it then this is what I was able to work out from the solo guitar stuff in the first minute and a half or so. Note it's in drop D tuning; not sure what Andrew Prahlow used, but you need a low D in there somewhere at least and the other stuff all seemed to make enough sense in that one. @@skua675 You’re awesome man! I remembered this comment and I came back to see if he learned it. I’ve taken to getting most of it by ear but the purposeful detuning along with his subtle yet vital-to-the-sound changes between sliding and hammering on of notes makes things really tricky to get right. Anyway, wonderful effort with that tab! I hope it helps a lot of people who want to learn this amazing riff. If I ever feel comfortable with my rendition here I’ll post it and see how it compares.

Reading these comments, I see people conjure vivid stories of the hearthians and the inhabitants. How they all put a part of themselves into their expression Me, I feel nothing. It creates no images in my mind I just feel an emptiness, as if I had memories of an emotion I had listening to it in the past but I can never recall Maybe that's because I have depression.
