Oh look, lazy, LAZY Disney restoration release!!!! Again, did anyone not learn from Pirates of the caribbean Failure of a restoration!!!! I'm not buying or wasting my time with this 4k Release and feeding a studio (Disney) that Doesn't care about the fans or respecting films in the restoration process. I'll stick with the blue ray💯💯 and a side note.. the reason why there is hate for this restoration... it's just another prime example of the love and respect this film has from so many people over the years. We the fans want it to be treated with all that in return cause the film deserves it💯💯 but Disney doesn't care... and they just darken it... here ya go, print us more money as they laugh their way to the bank and saying to themselves... boy!! We suckered them good again just like we did with pirates of the caribbean 4k 🤣🤣🙄🙄😡😡🤬 never again for me until Disney proves themselves with respecting restoration of our film History... which I know will never happen.. truly sad 😢😔💯
The transfer was terrible. Way to dark. Artificially dark in day time scenes. Its like they didn’t even watch the 4K. Who would watch that and say this was a good idea let’s put it into production. Instead of getting lost in the movie I spent to much time saying it’s to dark. Details and colors seemed fine but it was the brightness. It was like watching it with sunglasses on. Dark scenes were good. The end looked good in the hotel and in the airport. Weird inconsistency
For most movies, I think 4K is a fabulous format. However, you really have to have the right equipment to really get the upgrade of it. I have the previous HEAT 2 disc Blu-ray set and it is fantastic, in my opinion. That set is really cheap priced as well, about 6.99 at Best Buy.
That's what I did, the blu ray looks super fine, get it now at Amazon for 5.99, the disc is hot and sells out fast, so you may have to wait a few weeks for Amazon to restock. Make sure you get the improved one from 2017 by 20th C. Fox; earlier blu-rays were sub-par to this latest Fox blu-ray.
You get the definitive version included. Not sure if that's a lot of a difference in the US but it was only a 13 dollar difference here in Canada. Worth getting both versions. I stay away from the 2009 version as it's probably the worst of the 3.
If you stick with picture modes and presets that don't alter (much) the original regrading done in 2017 this movie, will be less saturated, too blue and too dark. Although with higher dynamic range in some milliseconds it's a softer less contrastier version than the other pre 2017 versions. There's basically two ways you can enjoy this movie if you use "filmmaker style pic presets". View it in a very dark environment making sure that player and TV are properly set in their HDR modes (check hdmi preset for instance) Or Use player or TV HDR optimiser if they have it (another name for tone mapping). This will only work for HDR or HLG content, not necessarily HDR+ or Dolby Vision. And it will basically adapt the movies color and brightness information to the TV's hardware capabilities. As a fan of the movie I've purchased the 4k, but when I'll watch the movie again I'll just use the Blu ray. I just don't like the new color grading.
I like the transfer and think it’s fine. As for the sound mix I just engaged the DTS Neural X on my receiver and it greatly enhanced things especially during the airport sequence when there were definitely overhead effects. I’m kind of glad they didn’t do an Atmos remix because there will always be naysayers and those that will pitch a fit screaming “no original this or that no sale”. Some people will never be satisfied!
I think the 4K version of Heat is absolute trash. I understand why fans of this film are angry. Here's the crucial point: It's not just that certain scenes are selectively darker. It would have made sense if Mann had decided to darkened certain elements in specific scenes. The problem is that the entire film has been uniformly darkened with the exact same gray-blue hue. What's so memorable about the look of Heat is how vivid the colors are, especially scenes at night when the LA skyline lights up the night sky. Those scenes are DEAD in the 4K. I have a very difficult time believing that Michael Mann oversaw or approved this 4K transfer because it's so artless, as though some intern just slapped a gray filter on the film and called it a day. Stick with the blu ray.
I don’t understand why they bother to transfer some movies to 4K just a cash grab and this movie, I would’ve like to see an upgrade on the audio because on the Blu-ray sometimes you can’t hear the dialogue on blu-ray without having your TV quite loud
Thanks for the review. The 4k Image quality is top notch on heat 4k. It’s a little dimmer than blu-ray which didn’t bother me. I should add though that the Panasonic’s HDR optimiser made the film look much much better compared to when the function is off
I think that if the transfer is really great that there shouldn't be any discussion about it. Ever heard anyone say Jaws or 2001 have crappy tranfers? Nope 🙂 If there is a big discussion and disagreement, that means that something is wrong with the transfer. Period! So you can state for a fact that this isn't a great transfer because of all the discussion. A great transfer doesn't need a 4000 dollar set up to look great. The equipment shouldn't make the transfer great, the transfer itself should make the transfer great (but you have to own the minimum requirements to play the movie of course) . I don't understand why people can't understand that. And it's Disney, so a lazy 5.1 mix from the existing blu-ray Fox already did in 2017 is a absolute disgrace. Like you said, this would be the perfect Dolby Atmos movie. Heat is by first known for the perfect audio. Such a missed opportunity this release. But that's Disney.
Heat is probably my favourite movie of all time. What I notice is that everyone focuses on the two leads, rightly so, but every one else delivers career best performances. Val Kilmer is leagues above anything he has ever done. I adore this film. As for the transfer, the Blu ray is perfect enough for me, yet to take the 4k plunge.
De Niro and Pacino are great actors for what they do and the characters they choose but my god...Daniel Day Lewis is leagues ahead of both of these guys.
I picked up the Director Definitive Edition on regular BluRay for $5 and it looks great. Comes from same scan as this 4K and downsampled. I see no need to upgrade based on the disappointing reviews.
My favourite Hollywood film of the last three decades, watched this on all formats from LD (I had it on VHS) all the way to the 2017 Blu Ray. And honestly I had to stop watching half way. For the first time ever I adjusted the brightness thanks to the HDR Optimiser, and even though it helps, I still feel that the dark setting suffers (especially during the beautiful blueish night scenes)
Your viewpoint of some dark scenes are interesting when you bring up that the director intended it that way but the studio chose release the DVD and BR differently in which the public was conditioned by the studio to prefer it their way.
It’s not a Michael Bay film it’s a Michael Mann film I liked it it felt right with the different colour grade. I’m glad he revisited it, it’s a brilliant film certainly my favourite Mann film. I was honestly expecting it to be horrific like Good Felllas or T-2. I was more than satisfied.
@@midlevelmedia no Ken the point I'm making is that Bays films are always bright and colourful and Manns are not they are usually darker. It's nothing you said. HDR doesn't equate to brighter it's about the overall colour gamut and tone
So I just came across HDTVTest’s video “warning this sneaky setting…” where he talks about an “eco” setting that is on by default on most TVs that darkens the picture. And I’m wondering if this is what is causing most people’s “too dark” experience. I don’t have heat on 4K but was wondering if anyone that does can check if that setting being turned off makes the difference. It’s eco setting on some TVs, energy saver, ambient light or something like that on others.
I saw Tarantino’s personal 35mm print of HEAT at his cinema The New Beverly circa 2010. I remember it looking desaturated and dark, just like this 4K transfer. I’ll have to take out the Blu-ray and compare it to this 4K transfer, just to see. I like the 4K transfer, as it’s what Mann intended, and it’s different to how I’ve viewed it on DVD/Blu over the years. I like a bit of warmth and saturation myself, but this is what the director wants.
Great movie, just watched collateral the other night with Tom cruise and Jamie fox another great Mann film The rewatchables podcast reviews this movie every couple years with all there catagorys worth a listen for us film nuts
Looks good on an ISF calibrated OLED and projector. It is slightly subdued, but is a characteristic of the film. Needs to be watched in darkness. I think this disc is great as detail and fine grain is present. Would be even better if Disney use BD-100s, but that’s another story. Previous transfers have had hotter contrast. (LD/DVD)
What blu ray release do you have? 20th Century Fox picked up the rights and released an improved blu ray in 2017 from a 4k scan overseen by the director, and it got rave reviews for improvement over earlier releases.
Random but can you tell me why Universal Blu Rays don't resume play after you stop them? I didn't have 3 hours straight to watch Casino and it starts from the beginning. So scouting. Thanks
Been there on some blu rays and it's a real pain. At first I though it was a player problem, but you're right, as it's the encoding on the disc, usually from earlier blu-rays. If Casino you have is a later disc, hd or uhd, and has the missing "resume play" option, then Universal needs to fix that issue going forward if not already.
Great review Ken. Heat is in my top two movies. I was disappointed by the reviews I read, R.E black levels and no audio upgrade and did consider skipping this as I have the blu ray but, hey, its in my top two so I buckled and bought it. I, did draw the line at the steelbook though (partly cos its sold out everywhere here in the UK anyway). Can't wait to see it again and gonna take my son along for the ride as it'll be his first viewing. Think ill just stare at him through the street shootout scene 😁
I bought the blu-ray for 5.99 (2017 20th century fox release which is improved on earlier blu ray releases, this Fox blu-ray release used a 4k scan overseen by director Michael Mann vs earlier releases which were 2k scans) a few weeks ago on Amazon after films at home channel sorta panned the this 4k release, among other reviewers. Th blu-ray is highly rated with some reviewers saying that while the 4k improves in just an area or two, it's offset by the blu-ray being better in other areas, i.e. overall brighter, etc. After the early reviews of the 4k, the blu ray on Amazon quickly sold out...I just checked and it's back for same 5.99 but with notice that it will take about one or two months before shipment...I assume as restocked discs at the warehouse gradually builds back up. And I agree that this movie is FANTASTIC!
The big shoot out later in the film,I was scared for the by standers. I’ve got the directors definitive edition on blu ray, which I bought on release of this 4K.
I pre-ordered the steelbook of this Fantastic movie after watching "Physical Media Report". Never seen the movie before and it's definitely in my Top 10!! My only criticism is I wish the Bass during the shoot outs or any gun scene would have been More Chest Pounding like those in John Wick. I have 4 SVS Subs that my lovely neighbors enjoy each time I turn up during movies and eventhough each shot in HEAT sounds Amazing, just give it more punch to make my smile bigger! Great Review Ken, thank you for all the work you put into each video, your professionalism and content is Awesome!
I watched it last night and thought it looked Great. Never noticed it being to dark at all. Never had a problem seeing anything at all, if anything I think it is one of the best looking 4k's that i've seen and what a great movie it is. Thx for sharing your thoughts Ken
Great review! I own the Blu ray and love it. I almost skipped this 4k when I started reading the reviews. But I pulled the trigger and bought the beautiful Best Buy Steelbook. One of my favorite movies. The ambiance, the feel of the movie is incredible. I haven’t watched it on 4k but will be doing it soon. Great channel, Ken! Thanks for all your hard work!
Yes, you have to adjust your TV a little to get an actually good picture quality. I find it hilarious that this is reason enough for some people to trash this 4K or return it. I mean, how often will anybody watch this movie at max? Once a year? Twice? Is it so bad to make a little adjustment twice a year for the perfect picture quality? Isn't it the case that most TVs have presets that can be used for this purpose? People are funny sometimes! :D
I honestly Watched it for the first time on my OLED LG C1 and i thought it would be too dark. I was surprisingly mistaken. The movie was not too dark I didnt even have to close the shades to my living room. Even the Scene of Rober De Niro talking to his GF with the Dark LA Background wasn't completely lost in detail. The samples people show on youtube of having an instegram like filter image was something that I did not experience of my time watching the movie. I never once had to lose focus on the movie because of it being to dark or the image tint making it look poorly edited. I am completly happy with the purchase and disagree with the people that say the transfer is too dark. Maybe if you watch it on a projector but with my OLED experience it was a great watch.
I will keep my Blu-ray until the 4K is $10 or less. Only then will I give it a chance and judge for myself. To much disagreement to spend the money now.
Okay I know there's a lot of hate about this new 4k transfer of Heat....so here's my opinion.....I love this new 4k transfer of Heat. Yes the movie is a little darker I realize that but that don't bother me whatsoever, U still see the film and there's some HDR scenes in this but what I really love about this new 4k transfer is the out of this world sound. The sound on this 4k is more enhanced than the Blu-ray and it just blows me away and I can't get enough of this Spectacular sound and my floor speakers 🔊🔊 sounds off the hook. I'm gonna watch it again tonight, to me this new 4k transfer is the best way to watch this iconic Masterpiece in Filmmaking achievement 👍📽📽📽
The main complaint I heard about the 4K, other than being dark, is it's not much of an improvement over the Blu. Also, make sure to check out the commentary by Michael Mann.
You can dislike a creative choice just fine, but if it’s what that person wants it to be like, that’s what they want it to be like and it needs to be respected, the creator is the end all be all for their creation
Not to dark to watch but still dark. The diner should not be lit like a night club at closing time. The steelbook is a must own for a fan of this film.
Honestly, I agree to an extent but I think they do make movies like this still, the problem is no one goes to see them in the theater so they don’t make money, which causes studios to not invest unfortunately
Awesome review. Totally agree. This is a solid transfer even if it is a bit dim. My Sony X900 handled it well, if you have the 2009 Blu ray get it because you get the definitive Blu ray from 2016 as well which is way better than the 2009 version
Never saw the movie, but do like the cover. Anyway, can I just watch the Dark Knight 4k instead? One of my favorites. I do have Casino in 4k, which I like as well.
One thing I love about your channel is you’re not trying to be somebody you’re not. You continue to stress that you’re just a midlevel “critic” with not the best equipment, etc. I respect that about you and your channel. Keep it up Ken. As for the transfer, it’s definitely darker but not the end of the world. It’s a decent upgrade.
I appreciate you saying that. I will upgrade stuff eventually, but I'm fine with what I have right now. And from my perspective, this 4K was a nice upgrade.
I was 5 when this came and my parents made me watch it. I began to love this film when I was probably 10 or so. Fantastic film. Have to add Daniel Day, Nicholson, and Brando.
The people who complain about Disney are made up of mostly prequel apologists. They will spend their entire lives online championing Jar Jar and flippy light sabre fights.
I thought the 4K was much improved over my 2009 Blu-Ray. I only paid $12 for it from DMC and I’m glad I did. The movie looked great and wasn’t dark or dim at all on my setup. It is in my top 5 for sure.
I'm sure the 4k looks great, but it's worth mentioning that the later Fox blu-ray hd release from 2017 used a 4k scan overseen by director Mann and result was significant improvement.
I've never seen Heat but decided I have to. I'm gonna buy it on blu-ray based on the 4K reviews. This one looks like a movie I'll like. I don't have good luck with highly recommended movies in general. I'm 3/4 of the way thru Goodfellas for the first time. I don't get why that's on everyone's recommended list. It's no Godfather, & Joe Pesci plays such a bastard that I gasped & then cheered when he got killed. 😎 I think Heat will be more like Godfather with the character development & likable people. Though they DO make movies like Heat today. They don't have to be 3 hours to do that. It's a rare movie that can hold my attention for 3 hours, so we'll see.
Great movie. To many superhero movies. I miss these type of movies. Been watching a lot of older movies, basically pre- 2015 or before superhero craziness. Movies were different. Heat along with True Romance are amazing.
People are never satisfied. I think the movie looks fantastic in 4K. Then again I thought Terminator 2 looked great too! I don't get it? Find something to complain about...
@@PesterFester1966 For the right movies, 4k is definitely NOT overrated. Go look at Stanley Kubric's 2001 A Space Odessy on 4k: The movie looks like it came out yesterday when it was released in 1968. The regular blu rays are utter trash compared to the 4k version.
@@PesterFester1966 Also you need a top of the line 4k TV/audio and top of the line 4k player to get the most out of the format where most people just buy cheap walmart TVs hence why they stick to their DVD's and blu rays.
