I had the chance to see the first film in 4k in theatres and it was so clean, besides the obvious grain from the camera and the colors were spot on. One of the best movie going experiences
Its that grain that I like. It's s gritty movie and looks of its time. I still have the DVD set for that reason. The film's subject matter shouldn't be pristine. It should look dirty. I think Coda is a big improvement.
Yeah I’m depressed I’ll never get to see The Godfather in Dolby Cinema again. Was the definitive way to see that movie to me. Only quality that was better was wen it first released in ‘72
I’m so happy that The Godfather trilogy has finally gotten a 4K release. Now, if only There Will Be Blood and No Country For Old Men can get 4K releases. Fingers crossed. 🙌🔥🙌🔥🙌🔥
No Country For Old Men would look amazing in 4k blu ray disc. Plus a new Atmos mix would also sound amazing. There Will Be Blood would be awesome too in 4k blu ray. Talking of Daniel Day Lewis, Last Of The Mohicans also deserves a 4k blu ray release!
I agree! I just wanted to make that clear. Some people think 4K needs to equal perfection and they expect every movie to look like a store demo. This is a beautiful release, but it’s not a Best Buy store demo
Gemini Man is ONE OF THE WORST movies I've ever seen. Although, obviously it was made for teenage boys (which I did not know, when until I watched it). No amount of 4K picture and perfect sound could ever make me want to watch that trash. The Godfather, on the other hand, is one of the greatest film masterpieces of all time.
I LOVE watching older movies on 4K. Just got the Halloween 1-5 from SF. It's amazing. I'm expecting greatness from this but will be waiting since I have the blu-rays and I need to save since I just spent on the Halloweens lol.
It just straight up doesn’t. I’ve seen a lot of your comments and tend to agree that film can be superior to digital, but it is absolutely not the case here. The transfers are not sharp in nearly every scene and the digital noise is so bad you can see the pixelation with the naked eye.
I saw The Godfather in Dolby Cinema and for a movie that was released in 1972, it was an AMAZING restoration and experience. Well done to Francis Ford Coppola and the restoration team!
Great review! I was fortunate to have seen the first movie at the age of 13 in the theatres at the time of the original release. The film definitely had a very subdued color palette and I'm glad to hear that they kept this new transfer faithful. It was always a gritty looking picture. In those days, certain films were only playing in limited theatres and I recall that the theatre I had seen it in played the film for numerous weeks--at least 20!--maybe more ...everyone was talking about the film and loved the film and the only complaint you would hear at the time of release was that folks had a hard time understanding Brando's dialog.
I wish they'd charge a little more and give us stronger higher quality, maybe even glossed carboard, for the exterior box. This is the Godfather and certainly deserves high quality packaging.
@@chebrubin It's okay but I don't need something that big just because it contains a big photo book and big photos. Not a fan of the slide-in disc sleeve style as they only scratch the discs over time. I also would have much preferred something practically sized and durable like The Karate Kid Trilogy 4K set.
In fact, both the original theatrical cut from 1990 and the 1991 cut that we've had on home video for many years (via seamless branching). Funny that Coda is subtitled "The Death of Michael Corleone", yet one of the scenes cut was the one confirming his death (Coppola claims he only wanted to imply his death at the end); but at least we still have his version of "Han shot first". 😉
Yes, WTF kind of a nutcase won't allow the audience to buy a copy of the original Star Wars movie? He's got a grudge against his ex-wife who edited that thing to perfection. So we're only allowed to buy one that he ruined with his 'genius'.
@@hxhdfjifzirstc894 That's ok. The original theatrical cut is still available as a 4K fan restoration project. All three of the original films will be, actually. They're not professional-calibre restorations, and are still works in progress, but they're more than good enough for me. The first time I watched the original cut again I was so glad to finally be able to see that cut again. "Yes, that's how it is supposed to be!" hehe. Search for 4k77, 4k80, and 4k83 and you'll find them.
Theres one scene in part 3 that is NOT in CODA, which makes the original cut superior all by itself. After Michael has a stroke theres a scene where connie, vincent, and Neri are in the chapel discussing the hit on Zasa. And Connie gives the final, "Do it!"--that scene is so great and its cut from Coda? Why?
I agree it's a great scene. The only thing I can think of is that people that can't remember the original part 3 or haven't seen it won't see the hit coming?
These are not good transfers. Godfather I and II look almost exactly the same, not sure what he’s talking about. They both are really soft and you can easily see the digital noise with the naked eye. It’s pretty ugly.
Thanks for another great review Jeff. I had a gut feeling about this release even before I watched this review, so much so that I already have pre ordered the SE a couple of weeks ago. ‘I couldn’t resist, they made me an offer I couldn’t refuse’
I believe Zaavi is doing something alittle better on the box. But I’m really discouraged with these studios being so lazy and cheap on the boxes. It just makes them look bad. Many new box sets are coming with high quality cases. Especially steelbook boxes.
Frozen grain, heavy DNR, almost no new extras, terrible flimsy packaging, etc...The 2008 Blu Ray restoration, while not perfect is a better way of watching these films...NO way would Gordon Willis have signed off on this! Paramount strikes again...This is an appalingly bad release ALL around. Don't know how you could possibly recommend this.
My wife has been dying to watch these, they're some of her favorites. I've never seen them and I told her I refused to watch them until the 4Ks came out, so I ordered the Special Collector's Edition 4K. Super stoked to get to finally experience these.
Thanks. Must-buy for me. & will bring me closer to replacing every one of my Blu-Ray box sets in 4K. BTW, your shelves in the background don't have enough black cases - they should be 4K discs!
He didn’t watch them , go to a channel called In search of Physical media He is honest and takes effort and time. He shows a comparison side by side with.the blu ray. U won’t get that here
For me it was actually the other way around: they kept the softness of the original films, but the HDR is such a massive and very noticeable improvement that you are finding new colors in every scene that were not there before.
I saw Part III in the theaters as a 16 year old, without ever having seen the first two films, and I was totally lost. I've only had the films on DVD, and I'm thinking of picking up the 2K Blu-ray set.
@@WrestlinGifs I saw what it looks like. I think people have issue with how the Discs are held more than anything. Additionally, the version seen in reviews is not the American version of the edition.
Seeing the first Godfather in Dolby Cinema was a fantastic movie going experience which I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity to witness in this generation when re-releases are a rarity these days unless it’s fathom events!
Can't wait to watch the films in 4k. Seems like companies are really dropping the ball on quality packaging. The deluxe version doesn't look movie shelf friendly and the standard packaging looks super cheap.
Honestly, I couldn't care less about special packaging. Just give me a regular blue case with the best picture and sound possible. And don't release 17 versions so I have to research for months on which one to buy. JFC
@@hxhdfjifzirstc894 I can definitely get behind you on the 17 different versions thing. As a collector, the packaging & artwork is as important as the film itself. These are things we display on our shelves. Its what draws our eyes to the shelf. Reminds me of when I was a kid at the video store.
I had the collectors edition pre ordered. But after I saw an Unboxing I canceled it. The book is not worth the extra price and the disc are placed in the book, without a proper disc tray, which sucks. In Europe the normal edition is one big Digipack, which I think is a nice packaging for a collection like this. And we also get every film on Bluray.
Thanks for the heads up. I’ll keep my Blu-ray collection. Not upgrading. Enjoy clean, or grain so fine I can’t see it. 4K to me, is to be very strong with HDR and DV. Atmos is always a plus.
Great review. Godfather is the definition of true classic. It’s a shame they didn’t bundle the blu rays considering the price. The collectors edition does but looks like they’re cardboard slide in style rather than click in. Look forward to your next vid!
I disagree. The intention was good, the effort in the works was hard, but the result is in general a worse experience compared to the standard Blu-ray. DNR, darker, notably less contrast, less shadow details and even complete color changes that destroys the original intention and the atmosphere of the film. Sure some scenes in the first movie look much better now, but those times where it doesn't, are enough to say no to this 4K release. And the two sequels are a big NO, no improvement, everything is just worse than the standard Blu-ray.
Yes! That was a common theme with early Blu-rays, they all tended to push 16x9 and didn’t keep the original aspect ratios. Other movies like Willy Wonka have also been fixed on 4K.
@@LennyNero2019 I’m aware but it’s still a once you notice it it becomes a noticeable difference thing. I can see the small black bars on my TV when I watch 1.85:1 movies
Thanks for the review and information. I only had it on dvd so looking forward to the 4K, have it preordered. Never seen the Coda version of part 3 so interested to see what he did with that (I think 3 is better than most give it credit for, but obviously not as great as one and two).
Great review Jeff! I was waiting for fhis one. It's wonderful that this project was not rushed like some other releases and that Paramount put in the attention and resources that this great historical movie trilogy deserves.
Great review, would like to ask, what about the chronological version, parts 1 and 2 re edited being restored?. on other sites a lot of people are interested in this, somehow I don't think it will happen
I'm just here in 2022 waiting for a home release of The Godfather Epic, the chronological reedit of part 1 and part 2 with over an hour of cut footage replaced. Pair it with Coda and get the ultimate versions of the whole story.
Just watched Godfather 1, I think it was gorgeous on 4K. HDR was on point. It was by far the best the movie has ever looked to me (I was not around when it actually played in the theatres). A must have I have been waiting for, didn't buy the dvd's. Godfather 2 is next up!
I was hoping to get a review of this collection before buying. I have grown to trust your reviews of movies and I will be picking this up on release day. The only thing I am bummed out about is that they are not including Blu-ray discs. I'll just keep my Blu-ray box set and pick up the 4K addition. I hope this does not become a trend with studios releasing a 4K set and not including Blu-rays.
So glad to hear it has film grain , i would not have purchased it if it was a clean transfer . I was waiting for a review to confirm what i wanted and hoped to hear . "As if you were in the theatres in 1972" sold , haven't seen this since the dvd releases , since i heard negative reviews on the picture quality of the blu rays . Thank you for you early review
Really did u even watch the first Godfather. On you tube go to in search of Physical media , he has a complete different opinion , watch him u mite learn something, That channel puts effort into his opinion. He watches the movies u don’t
I saw Godfather 1 and 2 in a theater in the 1990s before the digital era, and I remember that it looked reeeally dark. The picture had to be brightened up for DVDs and regular Blu-rays because otherwise black detail would be lost. This is exactly why we need HDR, so that more shades of a color (in this case, black) can be shown in a digital representation. Note that HDR pertains only to digital content. Before the digital era, theaters that projected physical prints ALREADY showed movies in HDR. That's because celluloid captures the real thing, with all shades of colors. Moviegoers from 1900s to 1970s already saw HDR in theaters, so WE are the backward ones, not they. We need HDR in our digital video just to make our imperfect digital transfer look closer to the real thing. That's because digital content is not the real thing unlike celluloid; it is only an **approximation** of the real thing. If you magnify a digital video or photo 100 times, you only see a grid of solid color blocks; whereas a blow-up of a celluloid still shows smooth beautiful film grain. Now we realize the SDR colors of RGB=256/256/256 that we have been using can't approximate close enough to the colors of the real thing captured on film negatives. That's why we need HDR, which has RGB=1024/1024/1024 colors, allowing greater range of colors to be shown. So I look forward to seeing this UHD Blu-ray, hoping the deep, subtle black levels will be better represented, bringing us closer to Gordon "Prince of Darkness" Willis' groundbreaking vision. Some viewers won't be pleased, of course. They think HDR = brightness like you said. That's not exactly true. HDR is all about better colors.
Thanks for the review, Jeff. I was NOT aware there was a completely new 4K scan done on the films, so I'm really looking forward to that. I'm eagerly awaiting the arrival of my collector's edition next week or so, but I saw someone else do an unboxing of the CE and was REALLY disappointed in the packaging, with the films arriving in cardboard slips within the CE book, much like the Star Wars films or the Hitchcock collection. That's a terrible way to package these films and make them extremely hard to get out. Grrrr!
The 1991 cut of Part III isn't even avaliable on digital anymore even if you wanted to buy it separately, he's damn near pulling a Lucas but at least he's smart enough to know some people like the alternate cuts and they're all here, even the actual theatrical cut.
So for the first time I much prefer the mono track for sound... I usually stick to the firm rule that music gets 2 channels (sometimes plus subs LOL) and movies get as many as are available (I run 9.2.6). The True HD track on these movies really sounds "artificial"... Like they had a hard time deconstructing the sound track and re-mixing it multi-channel (or they just didn't put much effort in) Just thought I would pipe in with an observation since it is the first time I ever preferred mono.
At least here in Germany, the pricing is shameless. On 4k, the movies are nearly three times as much as the trilogy on blu ray -- and let's be clear, I don't mean the previously released trilogy: I mean that the 4k discs are nearly three times the price of the newly-released 4k-mastered blu ray discs. Would love to have this on 4k, but will content myself with the blu rays.
Thanks for the review "Films"! appreciate it. Just out of curiosity: Did you watch all 3+ films in their entirety in one day? That seems like a massive undertaking!
Totally off topic.... Are you going to review the movie "Shooter"? I have seen other reviews but I value your insight more. May 100k happen real soon!!!
Just got my set tonight. I must say in the special edition set it may be worth buying a seperate disk case, as the disc's were sliding when I opened the book. Not very secure in the cardboard place holder.
I've only seen the first and part of the second and that was years ago so I couldn't tell you what happens so when I get this in 4k it'll be like watching for the first time. Super excited.
I did watch this the night before my physics exam instead of revising, the only A I ever got from an exam, then education wise things went downhill in a major key.
So happy to watch this great review. I think I will get the other edition, even if I have to wait for a sale. I like the art, but those flimsy cases drive me nuts with their spines that have literal gaps. The type of box cover with the karate kid set would have been great.
I fucking knew it! £75 is a lot of money and they give us this cheap shabby single thin packaging. Why couldn't they have a thick digipak. Am going to put the 4k disc into my Blu-ray Omerta Edition.
I just wish that Coppla would release the Godfather Epic version. It was on HBO not that long ago. It had Godfather 1 and to in chronologic order plus it had so much extra footage. It was originally on TV but cut. Then they released it on VHS as an epic with the uncut version with the restored scenes. You had to watch it in a couple of viewings but it was Fantastic. Like watching a new movie. I would like to have the 4k version of that film.
False information. The people that count had no say on this. Coppola and Gordon Willis. This new release is an insult. Nothing authentic far from it. Typical RU-vidr trying to sell the affiliate Links. Dont buy this people get the 2008 bluray. Another botched release like LOTR
I recently purchased the Godfather Part 2 on 4K Blu-ray (steel book edition). I'm very frustrated by the subtitles. It seems that I only have two options: 1. subtitles turned on for ALL DIALOG, including the scenes in English 2. the subtitles turned off, which means no subtitles for the scenes in Italian. In past releases of this movie, the subtitles have always appeared for the Italian language scenes only. Am I missing something? Is there any way to show subtitles for the Italian language scenes but not the English language scenes?
