Another excellent video! I learn so much watching your channel, Denise! Thank you for sharing all your tools and tips on how best to use them. Your introduction was great - so detailed in explaining about how we all wear our wigs differently (frequency, duration, environment, etc) and that it affects the longevity of the wigs. It’s really helpful to hear that explanation, especially to have that information at the start. I’ve been watching your videos about a year and just started wearing wigs last October. I would say about 90% of all my wigs are heat friendly (85% are Belle Tress, my favorite brand). I love them! I work remotely so I definitely don’t wear them as often as those who work onsite and I know that’s an advantage to them lasting longer. But I have found the extra maintenance is not that big of deal, especially since all my styles are shorter bobs. I only have a couple regular synthetic wigs and while I do like them, I much prefer heat friendly. So enjoying everything I learn in this journey! Thanks for all you do!

Thank you and I'm so THRILLED to hear you are doing well with wig wearing.... Belle Tress makes the cutest wigs and I LOVE their colors! I'm so glad I mostly got over my heat friendly fear and aversion (at least with straight styles), hugs!

I've tried this and it seems to work. To apply heat to the end of the waves of a heat friendly wig..., with the wig on a canvas head, I loosely gather the bottom of the waves and "enclose" the wig with the hair net that the wig came in. I then hit it with the steamer and then let them cool. I usually have to do it several times. The hair net alleviates the "gravity" problem for long wavy wigs and holds the waves. When I remove the net, the wave pattern is renewed and the heat that heat friendly fibers need every couple of wears has been applied and it looks great!!

When I was wearing wigs daily, the only ones I wore were Jacquelyn Smith for Paula Young and I typically got mine to last for 2 years. They are heat friendly. Let me be transparent in that I knew nothing about and it was a very difficult time for me and there was very little info available and no wig shops or professionals around to help me. I brushed them, cleaned them with sulfate free shampoo and conditioner and I would blow dry them on medium/cool about every three months. I told you, I knew nothing!!! As I look back at my wigs now, I can see that I should have probably changed them out more often, but they looked ok. I am blessed beyond words that after 13 years of wig wearing, my hair grew back, thinner, but I am able to go without wigs. I do wear a Remy Hair Sitting Pretty halo extension sometimes for a little fullness. Denise is doing such an amazing service to anyone on a wig journey. Denise you are a blessing. Even though I no longer wear wigs, I still enjoy your videos and I am learning a lot, which is helping me help a sweet friend that is on a wig journey. Peace and Joy... Diana

Great information. One suggestion I have is when positioning a curl or section i.e. away from your face, etc., after steaming, wait for the fibers to cool - that is what actually sets the form. And it takes longer to cool than you might think.

Oh my gosh real talk thank you. I have been so frustrated by all the wig girls showing hair after hair and not really telling us truths. I agree product is not helpful. I have been using plain cold water every night and let it dry. Seams to be working . I have done this for about 4 months and my heatfriendly longer wig has been happy. I do use heat but not every time. Also knowing a good vendor means everything to me. The one I was going she cuts tags immediately so you don’t have the info for later. No packaging so I can see care instructions. So mail order is for me but I cannot find somebody to order from that is transparent on order issues. I am so frustrated with that. I do want a human hai wig badly but if I cannot get synthetic easy why would I buy human at thousands of dollars from them. Holding a 600 purchase and not telling me it’s back order until I wait and wait and contact them then get oh your right it is back ordered. Hey I am not rich.

Great video! Making a heat friendly wig in a wavy pattern is an oxymoron, lol. The minute you steam or put heat on it it changes the fiber and does not necessarily help at all. If I may add... I have a heat-defiant wig which I was trying in vain to put some curl into to no avail. I finally saw a video which showed that for a curl /wave to stay it has to be held in place until it cools! The light bulb finally came on! Unlike human hair these are synthetic fibers (sort of plastic-ish) and won't keep the shape until cool! Silly me😁

Great information! I’m wearing a Raquel Welch HD topper every day for 9 months now. I was disappointed when it started to lose its newness after a few months. This video has really helped me to understand the normalcy of how the fibers age. Before this one, I wore regular synthetic toppers for about 5 yrs! They are pretty mtce free but they go flat and lose their body (volume). I like the HD fibers because they hold the body and look more natural. I will continue to buy the HD for that reason. Your video really helped me stay committed to HD. I guess it comes down to how much you want to work on them vs. easy care. I love working on hair (I was a hair extensionist for 10 yrs) so I’m in! I have all the tools you have, but I think I’ll invest in a freestanding wig stand. I currently use the kind that clamps onto a table. It keeps slipping off. Thx again Denise. This is a good video to save and refer back to!

I have an HD wig that I wore for 2 years, and if I wanted to rejuvenate it, I could still wear it! It’s all about maintaining it with heat regularly. Straight, minimally layered HD wigs are easier to maintain than curly, imho, as you only need to heat the ends. I do tend to wear the long HD wigs only in updos. I feel more in control of HD fibers because they can always be rejuvenated with heat! I understand that curly/ wavy HD wigs can be rejuvenated with steam, though I’ve never tried it.

You sure reduced my anxiety about treating my HF wigs. I’ve been avoiding wearing them often so I don’t wear them out. My favorite is human hair blend. I want to go longer, to the shoulder but I look weird to me in long hair until I could find something like color 38 in something other than pixies. I learn so much watching your videos. Show some examples with darker wigs and grays, not blondes. I would like to see How to Use Heat or products for maintenance or Re-styling Synthetic wigs. Can I heat the bake of a Synthetic wig similar to doing so to a heat friendly or blended?? I’ll check to see if maybe you’ve done i video on synthetic wig upkeep. I have 3 year old. synthetic wigs that look like ‘out of the box’ new condition. My rule has been not to do anything to modify the fibers. Wash, dry and spray a simple conditioner. Wait overnight before boxing it. What do you think 💭 about this idea? Thank you! You are an excellent teacher and video producer.

I cannot believe the level of care wigs require! And they're not even human hair! In many cases, the care required is more than one's natural hair. 😮 I just bought 3 expensive synthetic wigs and now I'm petrified that I made a bad decision to buy them. Didn't realize their life span was so short either, even with good care. Very disheartening. 😢

Unfortunately, that can happen with most wigs. I almost always have to use heat to get lift in the front of my wigs, especially straight bobs. They can sometimes train over time with wear as well. I NEVER do that for an initial wig review, but if you see me using a wig after the review it is possible I made it my own. If it is recent I will mention that so people aren't confused if they purchase, but when a wig is older like this one was, sometimes I can't remember what I did to it, lol.

Loved your video on heat friendly wigs. I have one and it needs some help. I will try what you have said. I do have a question on regular synthetic wigs. Will the sun do damage to your wig if you are outside in the sun for a long time? Thanks for all you do!
@heywigsister
@heywigsister 2 года назад
I've had a few people ask me that question recently. I honestly don't find that the sun damages synthetic wigs and I wear mine in the sun all the time. That's sad, and some Southern climates that's on can get pretty darn hot so if you're sitting in the sun for long periods of time with it really heating up those fibers I can't say that it won't potentially alter a curl pattern if it is a super curly wig. Things can get pretty hot if they are sitting in full beating sun in the summer. I haven't personally experienced this, but if it's that hot out I'm not likely sitting in the beating sun for any significant period of time anyway.

Hi, Linda! I would treat one of the blends just like you do a straight heat-friendly... while human hair can take higher heat, the heat friendly can typically only go up to 350 degrees so that is what I would limit the heat to. Something really cool about those blends is that they hold the style like a heat friendly synthetic does, but they don't show wear nearly as quickly. Hope that helps!

Denise I have two Ellen Wille Luna Hi Heat wigs They are fairly long and I fear the Hot Tools brush is too small. I have searched everywhere for a bigger barrelled brush without success and I didn’t want anything with bristles.I also don’t want to straighten my wigs.Could I use steam and Velcro rollers .What do you think?

Absolutely!! And you are right, it is IMPOSSIBLE to find a hot air brush that is large without those bristles.

How do you store a wig when you’re not wearing it? Do you put it on a wig head or what?

To try to put some volume/poof/lift/roundness at the top/crown of a wig (Belle Tress Morning Brew)(my first wig) that has no permatease, could that be steamed in, put in with heat from a heat styler? Or what would you recommend? And would it stay? Thx
@heywigsister
@heywigsister Год назад
It really depends on the wig... Belle Tress wigs are tricky because there just isn't anything to hold the volume. I have sucessfully gotten lift in the front with a hot comb or steam, but to get true volume is next to impossible, and even if you do it is hard to get it to hold without permatease.

@@heywigsister Well, thanks for that info. I'm afraid I misjudged in purchasing the Morning Brew style. The Belle Tress color blends solve the color question for me - but I need crown/top volume such as Noriko makes. Do you know of a good style that would combine both?

How do you feel about Jon Renau cleanser /conditioner/detangler? Is that going to gunk things up?
@heywigsister
@heywigsister Год назад
To be honest, I do not like them at all. I do think they gunk wigs up and I have heard the same from MANY wig sisters... that said, i do know some who like those products so there is a personal preference factor here. I will say... I can't count how many times someone has reached out to me complaining that they washed their wig and it feels terrible, and when I recommend trying a different product it ALWAYS makes a difference. Here is a video I made showing my favorite products: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nDzixbbOsPc.html

@@heywigsister Awesome, thank you I will check out that video. I had a feeling you would say that and also based on some comments I found at /r/wigs I cancelled my order on amazon. I saw comments that dish soap or dr bronners soap work well and hey i have those things! lol

What mannequin do you recommend? Are there different size heads?

Yes, you can get different size heads. Here is the one I have, and it is a 22".... I would get one that is similar to your head size. amzn.to/3RUbMKS

Wigs are very expensive, so if I have one I am wearing everyday, how long will it last?
@heywigsister

That is a great question.... and there are actually quite a few answers because it depends on so many things... I have a video coming out in the next week or so on this so stay tuned!

Denise, again thank you so much for helping me on this journey which has been expensive & difficult for me, but I can truly say, since I met you as my You Tube Wig Advisor, I have come a long, long way in understanding my wigs. I started losing my hair by the handfuls when my intestine burst open in 2020 and I was at death’s door with a body full sepsis. After 4 major surgeries, I am so thankful to be alive today. I have now lost lots & lots of hair and I am so thankful for wigs and you!! Just a quick question, did you say my Hot Tool dryer, which is just like yours, could be used on regular synthetic wigs that are not heat resistant??? 🫶
