For Shark Week, we combined lasers and sharks to demonstrate the difference between a heat mark and a laser engraving!
A heat mark is a thermochemical reaction that creates an oxide layer on the surface of a part, producing a permanent mark. Engraving occurs when a laser displaces material in a part. This also creates a permanent mark - the difference is that the latter creates depth and a mark you can feel, which is not the case with a heat mark.

Generally when annealing, we start with Power at 20 watts, Frequency at 20kHz, and Speed at 75mm/s, with the laser slightly out of focus by about 4mm. But that's just a starting point - we make adjustments as needed. We have a short video on annealing which you can see in the link below. However, because lasers and applications vary, settings that work for us may not work for you.
