In this video we cover how the TXV bypasses in the heat pump cycle.
We cover internal and external check valves plus the bi-flow Txv that meters in either direction.
Special thanks to JD Kelly @ Student_of_HVAC for these graphics!
We do not cover how the normal operation of the TXV as that has been discussed previously here:

Heat pumps typically have 2 metering devices but only 1 is used at a time.
in this video we discuss how TXV bypass when not in use. we also discuss how a single TXV can be used to meter in either direction.
Thermostatic Expansion Valve tires to control Superheat and work very well in Heat Pump operation for air conditioning or heating.

Yes on package hps generally it will only be liquid passing through the drier in cooling mode. In heating mode it will be a sat/ flash gas passing through. Always noticed that but never thought too much into it. It's really the only way unless they installed one on each side of the metering device

I heard a lot if the inexpensive mini-split units also use a single metering device in the outdoor unit and lack a liquid line filter drier? That plus R410a's oil situation doesn't bode well for longevity it feels.

How does this apply to NATE Questions. From the condenser to the liquid line, there should be a liquid seal. To prevent flash gas and have a proper subcooling at the liquid line.

How would you know whether or not a particular TXV has an internal bypass?

How about the package heat pumps with only one TXV? Can anyone guide me on how to troubleshoot them?

I have a unit that trips high pressure in heat pump mode like 650 psi but runs perfect in cool mode, could this be the bypass not working on the condenser side, also suction line is 180 degrees so it seems like reversing valve is working

100% absolutely not the reversing valve! The one of the most misdiagnosed comments. I have gone to countless call where the previous company or tech said it was a bad valve and it was not. I have replaced very few valves over the years. #1 you have an airflow problem. The indoor needs more airflow in heating mode than AC mode. Few people know how to actually check airflow. #2 overcharged. An overcharged system will work in AC but will be a problem in heating. There are some other other things to look for but those are the main 2
