So, I thought I had managed to race back to a station before the guard that had been sucked out into space was considered "harmed", but that's not actually true. In my panic, I paused for a moment after I had left the window, and it was *before* the guard did. I talked to esteemed Heat Sig daily player DurryQuill and discovered that once you're out of a ship, after 4 real time seconds, the game unloads it (with some exceptions). That time still passes while the game is paused! The two pauses that I did, with only a handful of frames between them, were *just* enough to unload the ship before the guard could be sucked out!

13:08 You paused while bash-dashing (extremely risky, you nearly bashed that guard), that's why you couldn't steal the key. This can be recognized by the only option being "Collision Sensor" under "Things you can do here" until the bash-dash is done.
