Heat Signature dev log: the first builds of a stealth game in space

Here's the first video of Heat Signature, a temperature-based space stealth game I've been making the last two days. It's about sneaking up on ships while keeping cool enough to fool their sensors. So you can jet around an infinite galaxy super fast, but your thrusters generate heat, and enemies can detect that from far away. The closer you want to get to them, the cooler you have to stay, and the more precise you have to be with your thrusters. And to take them out, you have to physically clamp onto their hull and shut down their systems.
GHGC is still my main project, I'm just taking a break from the brutal process of learning Unity to make something quick in Game Maker, where I already speak the language. How far I take this depends on how the next few features work out.
GHGC, the grappling-hook stealth game I'm also working on: • The Grappling Hook Gam...

my goodness, this game has come a long way.

The sound that it makes when the ship turns off sounds really satisfying, it'd be cool to see some really nice visual and sound design and I'd be sold on a space stealth game, especially if it was rogue-like haha.

I had this exact feedback. "I dunno what I'm doing yet but that freakin' metal cooling noise is ace."

"In a fairly short space of time." I had a bit of a laughing fit, there, two years later.

Eeeyup. 4 years, and a few months. I got a good chuckle from that as well.

Ideas: You could make some giant ships you could fly into. Like shops and missions, to buy fuel or upgrade. Carry dead enemy ships to the big ships ( or somewhere else) to melt it and get parts/money. Bounty's you get a mission to kill someone, maybe you get a radar to track em down. Escort missions ø, this game could be all from stealth to shooter to stragedy. I Hope you can use the ideas.

This looks awesome. I'm picturing this as a stealthy spy game. Like, have important ships you need to get to and hack without being detected and such. Maybe overload an enemy ship, so that other ships go over to investigate, so you can distract them, as Adam mentioned.

This looks really good so far, and could go many ways, but in my opinion a puzzle format would amazing, with diffarent levels and a story line and objectives etc. Nice work

This looks great so far and it could go anywhere. I would personally like to see it go down more of an upgrade-based route.

It's interesting seeing all of the mechanics and designs which were eventually scrapped. This game has come a loooong way, and I'm so glad it is now finished. Can't wait for the next one!

Already impressed. Love the idea of using dead ships as camouflages.

Love things like this, not only does the game sound super exciting, but your commentary greatly interesting. I gave up on software design, but I feel like that's just because I didn't have any cool ideas like you seem to have in abundance.

I think you should place the game in the asteroid belt, lots of rocks hitting each other and places to hide behind or in. Every other region of the solar system (let alone the galaxy) is, well, empty. It has a few objects of over 400km diameter, plenty of room for exotic colonies and they even some gravity.

so this ship works the same as the one from futurama, it moves the universe around it

hah, so the game moves the universe around you? it's the planet express ship!

Ever read Cook's Passage at Arms, Tom? I always wanted something very nearly a Silent Hunter type thing, but in space. Nice job adapting the concept of invisibility (submergence) through heat!

Idea that might be dumb: attaching to enemy increases mass>spreads heat>heat up more slowly, but can build up more heat that has to dissipate making it a trade-off between fast changes and large amounts of thrust.

Can you put coordinates so that a player can return to a place that he once visited?

Just a thought; adding planets could serve as a reason not to jet around at mad speeds as the player could smash into a big planet at any moment. That being said, that could also be really annoying. Asteroid fields could also do a similar thing, perhaps a small build-up of debris before a lot of big rocks could help solve with the suddenness of the problem.

There could be some kind of alert HUD at the edges of the screen that point towards huge stuff coming towards you that are out of the your field of view, that would solve that problem.

That looks cool. I like the relativistic treatment of motion. Any plans to add relative velocity time dilation?

That's quite philosophical, actually. You don't move, the world moves around you. It could be a comment on... narcissism or something.

You might want to consider dynamically changing the radius of the detection circle according to the player's heat. As it is, they don't seem to mean much unless you know the underlying system. However, with several ships on the screen this might get really distracting, and the player could eventually learn how to work with the circles as they are right now.

Also, my idea wouldn't work if you were to implement decoys (as per Adam Preece's suggestion).
@Pentadact
@Pentadact 10 лет назад
You can't see it very well because of video compression, but there's a line that extends from the enemy ship to the player, showing how close to detection you are. The hotter you are the closer it comes to touching you, particularly as you get closer. I'm gonna make it clearer, possibly like a searchlight cone reaching out to you.

hey, how are you ? can you please please tell me how you did the zooming and parallax background for heat signature ? I tried parallax moving surfaces or just one surface but updating the position of the stars each step or even using colored vertices but the fps just always drop to much. Do you save every star position into an array ? And the bigger the view gets by zooming out the bigger the problem becomes. I'm at my wits' end. It seems like that was pretty easy for you but I'm already working on it for weeks. I'd be so thankful for your help. And you would be the most awesome person ever : ) thank you very much

Have you considered using this as a mini-game inside a larger game? Initially just to transport a character between worlds but later have them pilot-stealth into areas and/or engage patrols of enemies?
@Kerpunk12
@Kerpunk12 10 лет назад
Are you going to add some sort of gravity to the game, so you have to fling around planets and such? Was it in the latest podcast you were speaking about something like that? Either way that would be pretty cool :p
@nuazak
@nuazak 10 лет назад
it'd be a cool way to change course without having to accelerate and thus heat up your engine
@Soulsphere001
@Soulsphere001 8 лет назад
So I'm guessing the star positions are all randomized. Do you keep track of the star positions when they're created or are they always just recreated when they appear on the screen? ... Or are you using predetermined background images?

This reminds me of a game on the Amiga. Cannae remember the name... But, it had a ship called the 'Earthling' and many many other types of shits that you battled vs comp and other players. Anyone know what Im referring too?

Could you explain how you managed to get the background object to tile horizontally/vertically? I'v been trying to do the same thing and I'm having difficultly getting it to work. Thanks

why moving the universe around you ? couldn't you just as well move the view manually ? inprecision with floating numbers starts at something like a 15 digit number... is that too small or is there any other reason to use this approach ?

I don't understand game maker. In a "proper" language, an infinite world is easier, well, at least as infinite as your data types. May i make a suggestion? The player should move, only the camera should stay still. This allows camera effects like camera lag, and also stuff like the ship being able to have a non-infinite mass for collision detection.
