Heat Treating Montana Sapphires at Home?

A lot of Montana Sapphires are pale colors that don't fare well on the market. Thus, many are heat treated, meaning they are subjected to extremely high temperatures that serve to improve their clarity and color (depending on your definition of improve). I wanted to know if we could bake 'em hot enough at home to change them into more appealing colors.

Since making this video, I read about an interesting way to create a reducing environment on the cheap. Now I just need a hotter furnace to retry!

@@johnbecker2394 I don't remember where I read it, but it involves sealing the sapphires in a crucible with plain charcoal. The tricky part seems to be getting a tight seal that doesn't fail at high temperature.

@@DonohueLabs yeah, that also sounds like a good way to put enough pressure on your crucible to create a small bomb. I'll just let that one be. Lol

Just search Sri Lankan traditional methods, people are too concerned with numbers and technology when the answer is to look to how it was done without tech.

Curious to see a part 2 to this clip if you decide to re-heat to the same or higher temperature. It would be very impressive to see those lighter blue stones which turned yellow-ish either revert to blue or turn any other color, really. That would be like a magic act.

Thats awesome! I live in Montana. So we get to go to places that aren’t tourist areas. Better chances at bigger stones. Those guys filter bigger (money) stones from the gravel before tourists even get near it. Even “freshly” dug gravel has been sifted. It’s a drag when you’re making or trying to make decent jewelry. I usually heat treated mine by method of cast in place. Awesome video though. Thanks for sharing. 😎👍🏾✌🏾

Tip. When treating a sapphire. There is no guarantee the color will stay or change. Or even stay a whole single stone. A lot of them split or cleave. 😂 I’ve lost a few.

Are you willing to ship some of that unadulterated gravel to CA? When I used to work in Trapper creek the locals told me of some good spots but I never had a chance to pan anything. Looking for a birthstone for my daughter

In my experience, the rutile crystallization ( silky looking or milky looking or cloudy looking or sleepy looking effect ) can sometimes be seen to be reduced at temperatures as low as 1000 degrees.... If you are specifically testing the material to observe at what temperature can the Rutile **begin** to be reduced then a temperature as low as 1000 degrees Celsius can begin to reduce the rutile Crystallization in a small percent of the pieces and depending on which source the Corundum comes from. In theory the Rutile Crystallization starts to form at 1400 degrees Celsius and continues until around 1200 degrees Celsius by way of Titanium Di-Oxide being present in the make up of the Corundum...... Because the cooling down periods of the corundum crystals are measured in the tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands or millions of years of time while very slowly cooling down, the Titanium Di-Oxide that is present has time to Crystalize into microscopic or Nano sized rutile crystals within the Crystal lattice structure of the corundum. The rutile crystals are *elongated* crystals and when observed under the microscope the crystallization is seen in a range of sizes being short to long and fat to slim, in comparison. All the Rutile Crystallization that does occur and seen in various degrees and described causes a light scattering effect and makes any or each piece of corundum looking as described above or mixtures of the various looks that can be described. Generally, the rutile crystallization will not begin to dissolve until around 1150 degrees Celsius but in some sources a percent of the Corundum pieces will be seen as having the rutile crystallization reduced and even a very small percent looks like the rutile crystallization is eliminated at those lower temperatures. To ** completely** eliminate the Rutile Crystallization in every piece requires temperatures of up to 1800 degrees Celsius and even higher temperatures of up to 1900 degrees Celsius ...which is difficult to achieve and requires higher temperature heating technology that is expensive while there are other heat related factors that are encountered at those higher temperatures. Meantime, most of the Rutile Crystallization in most sources of Corundum can be removed with heating configurations ( furnaces ) that are limited to 1750 Celsius, ** actual stone temperature** while the furnace limitations are stated at 1800 degrees Celsius However, if and when a person does push the furnace configuration to 1800 degrees Celsius they will encounter heat related problems and heat related damage caused to the interior components of the furnace and the heating elements breaking or damaged. Even at 1750 degrees Celsius, actual stone temperature, a percent of the corundum remains with varying degrees of rutile crystallization observed. Cheers

Heat treatment conditions depend on which colour you want to develop and some qualities of the stone. With that, we can decide the treatment temperature and atmospheric condition of the treatment. BTW, usually you can't develop blue without reducing atmospheric condition. sapphire heat treatment is broader subject and it can't be explained in single 10 min video.

If sapphires get too hot will they melt or will the crystal structure break down? What would they become after melting?

Will it remove unnecessary inclusions? For example like Burmese Blue Sapphire has yellow line. Will it disappear or blended and causing bi-color?

I think some use a vacuum to purge atmosphere so they can better control the conditions and introduce a gas of choice.

Sir how much tempreture did you heated 1800 celcius temperature or 1800 ferinite temperature

Fahrenheit, and maybe not even to 1800 F, not hot enough for the proper color change technique.

@@sonuverma2796 Yes. I thought his furnace could do 1800 C but it was only 1800 F, which is why the color didn't really change much.
