Heated Driveway Melting Snow Time Lapse During a Buffalo NY Lake Effect Snow Storm on [1-6-2022]

This is the system startup and time lapse footage of my 1,600 sq ft heated driveway during a Buffalo, NY Lake Effect Snow Storm with heavy bands of lake effect snow in January of 2022.
Chapters:
00:00 - Intro (Dark)
02:39 - System Startup
05:52 - Time Lapse (No Snow)
07:05 - Time Lapse (Snow Begins)
11:24 - Outro & Statistics
In anticipation of the storm beginning at 8:45 PM on January 5th, I turned the driveway on at 7:30 PM to pre-heat it. It turned out the meteorologists were completely inaccurate, and the storm didn't actually begin until approx. 6 AM on January 6th (10.5 Hours Later). While pre-heating the slab before a storm does help performance, in cases like this it can waste a lot of resources and money when running for no reason.
When it did start snowing, the system performed as expected. Although it was temporarily overwhelmed during the heaviest snow bands, it caught up quickly once things lightened up, and I easily cleaned up the little bits remaining while I was out shoveling the sidewalk and apron.

If you’re new to my channel and want to start at the beginning, I recommend you visit my Heated Driveway / Snowmelt playlist which can be found here: • Heated Driveway / Snow...
The playlist will have all of my videos in the correct order form start to present, regardless of the date I uploaded them. It starts with how I designed the PEX and Snowmelt Loop Layout, shows the process of installing the actual heated concrete slab, demonstrates how I did the math to calculate the boiler and pump sizes, installation of all of the components, and ends with lots of time-lapse of the system melting snow. It also includes snowmelt system startup and shutdown videos, as well as walkthroughs of the mechanical room, continuous circulation design and electrical system.
I will be uploading more videos of the system in action each winter, as well as several videos of the installation process, including soldering, filling with glycol, venting, etc. If there is something in particular you would like to see, please ask, and I will make a video of it.

You know a snowblower was invented a pretty long time ago, why shovel? Honestly I bought my house in 2009 at the age of 26. Unfortunately we finally got a real winter here in MN that first and second winter, where I couldn't keep up to the snow on my large driveway, to the point where I gave up on the 3rd stall. I finally bought some old used blower for $150 cash from a guy. Reworked it myself for $100-150 more dollars and been using ever since really starting from winter 2011/2. So over 10 years of use. I will say there have been a few winters in there that it didn't get much use and if it was 3" or less I just shoveled, until the later years now where even 2" I will run it. Best $300 I've ever spent.

This system provides all of my domestic hot water, the primary radiant heat for my garage and basement, and supplemental floor warming heat for my master bedroom & bathroom, kitchen, entryway, etc. If this was just for the driveway, it would be probably be much simpler 😉. Years ago I worked at a shop that was fully heated by heated floors. It also had a heated apron to stop ice buildup by the vehicle and easement doors. When it would get below 0f running the heated apron would drop the water temp substantially so we would go from 60-65f inside down to around 45 to 55 max and the boiler/ heater would never shut off. But shutting the outside flow off it would go back to cycling and warm up inside. The wind and cold will just zap the heat from the heated areas outside.
@DeckerChristopherJ
@DeckerChristopherJ Год назад
I believe that, Rusty! Luckily it doesn't usually snow a lot at temperatures that cold, but 0ºF and a breeze will suck the heat off a slab FAST. I'm not sure if you've watched any of my other videos, but I explained in my Mechanical room videos how I was at the upper limit with 1 200,000 BTU Heat Source. I'm so glad I went with 2. If you want to see how they were installed, check out this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-lMb4JjBGurA.html I think it's kind of neat to watch the video of the tubing installed and then seeing exactly where those lines are when it melts 😊. Maybe that would make for a good video, fading the install footage over / into a video of it melting. 🤔 Thank for watching and taking the time to comment!

my neighbor in my parents house had a heated driveway, it worked great. this was nearly 40yrs ago, so im sure they have changed a lot, but his was great. it mustve been around '95 or so when i still lived in my parents place, and i came back from FL during Christmas time & new england was getting hit with el nino. The blizzard of '95 was around then too, which is why i recall it so well.

I once lived in Greece, NY for like 6 months and that Lake Effort Snow is no joke and the funeral home that I worked for had once heated driveway systems towards the front entrance. But it wasn’t as sophisticated as this one. I would not mind having one of these systems in my driveway, if the price is right.

I actually skipped to the snow falling because I have no idea or interest in learning how it works or it’s put together; I just wanted to see how it melts the snow. I've been thinking about heated driveways for a few years now. I always thought it would be nice to keep snow and ice from accumulating, after shoveling and after the snow stopped falling. Keeping a single snowflake from accumulating doesn't seem particularly practical to me but it's good to see what the system is capable of.
@ph11p3540

I live in an Edmonton high rise condo where the parkade has a heat traced concrete entry ramp. It turns on at 0 to -15C degrees during a snow storm. If there is a deep freeze predicted during the snow storm, the heating element is never to be turned on. The reasoning is, the heat tracing system will never be able to keep up in a deep freeze and end up turning the first layer of snow into hard to remove ice. It's cheaper and easier to shovel snow off of really cold pavement then it is on slightly warm pavement because the snow hasn't really turned to ice yet. For this reason, the building caretaker is the one who makes the judgment call on when to turn on the heat tracing system and when not to. It can get super cold in Alberta and snow acts funny on warmer surfaces. The rule of running the heat tracing element is, if the snow falls in big fluffy flakes turn it on. If it's cold and the snowflakes are really tiny, with plunging temperatures going below -15 C leave it off.

Pretty cool. I'm originally from Lockport now living in South Eastern Virginia where it's usually a little bit warmer. I remember some of those snow storms and they can be brutal. As a child I loved the snow but when I started working it dampened my enthusiasm mainly because of shoveling the drive way. How much snow accumulation did you actually get? At $26 to me that's a bargain to not have that burden, because you don't just shovel once, it's every few hours when it's coming down and repeat once you get up. It's funny here when we get a threat of snow the schools and businesses close, a couple of inches and people are in the ditches. Take care, wishing you well from Virginia.

Thanks Smolex! It’s is definitely a luxury. I didn’t do my sidewalks and apron because that is technically not my property (owned by the town), but I probably could have without issues. My main concern was the area between the houses where I have no place to put the snow. If all I need to shovel now is the sidewalk and apron, and the remainder of my 1600 sq ft driveway is melted, I’m happy 😀. If you do decide to install this, check out my playlist.
