Lance makes an apology sound like an insult. I don't know how anyone criticising the interviewer would have handled the interview differently. I want to see Kimmage and Walsh interview Lance. If I was a journalist, I would find it hard to be nice to Lance Armstrong.
Indeed. Asteriskstrong thinks that saying you're sorry makes up for millions of dollars of financial damage and years of harassment and ostracism. Repentance involves atonement, and he hasn't done it.
This was the type of interview Mr. Armstrong needs to continue to have. Too many interviewers lob him softballs and let him BS his way through. The Oprah Winfrey interview was a start……but this is an example of what cheaters need to face.
LOL all these comments criticizing the interviewer.......poor little Lance, just horrible that he is being treated in a rude manner......it's not like he ever was disrespectful to anyone, and certainly didn't bully people and act like a complete jerk.
Ger is the worst interviewer in Ireland. He doesnt even ask questions. Long winded statements of his opinion with no question. To also interview the most hated man in sport and come across unlikeable is quite a feat in its professional ineptitude.
Finally an interviewer asking the hard questions. Answers I got where what I expected. Never offered any financial relief to the lives he destroyed. He basically said I'm sorry and see ya later.
@@michaelnotary5205 that's racing? He destroyed a massage therapist's life, a retired racer's multi-million dollar business, a cyclist's wife's life, and countless reporters' careers. Not okay man. You cannot compartmentalize this so easily.
This guy did a good interview with Tyler Hamilton. This interview isn’t good. His hurt feelings and bitterness toward Lance comes through clearly here and it makes him sound pretty childish. Lance did horrible things. That being said, this interviewer just comes across as sour grapes. I also kept waiting for it to get “heated”, but I guess my definition of heated is different. This wasn’t heated at all.
Completely agree with you! The interviewer did a terrible job here and immediately drew a line in the sand between himself and Lance from the start. Not a smart way to do an interview. After that you aren’t going to get any good answers. Terrible job done here
I thought finally there was a reporter holding his feet to the flames, it's about time. The shocking truth that is unbelievable to me is that he needed a LAWYER in the room when he did his apology to Greg Lamond and apparently so did the Lamonds, which them having a lawyer would kind of make sense when you see what he did to Gregs money earning potential, but what did Lance need a lawyer? So horribly obvious, its all business and manipulation so he has the dialogue going forward about apologizing to everyone.
I don't understand the criticism of the interviewer. Of course the focus of the interview is going to be about doping and how disrespectfully Lance treated people. Lance was a master doper and cheater who treated people with disrespect and contempt and was able to avoid getting caught for quite some time. Suppose you were interviewing a bank robber who robbed 100 banks and didn't get caught. Wouldn't you be curious how the bank robber was able to successfully rob 100 banks and not get caught? I would just for the sake of curiosity.
Armstrong has more of a right to avoid being insulted if he hadnt insulted other people so unfairly in the past. In the end i feel it was a calculated interview on armstrongs side. i dont think he was directly insulted. It was more like a police/courtroom style interview where the emphasis was on armstrong to prove he isnt guilty of anything. If he doesnt care or comes up short then it tells its own story. The only criticism i would have is that the thankyou the interviewer gave at the end sounded disingenuous. Armstrong at least turned up and gave his time and that should have been respected. Also in other videos this interviewer has a habit of putting the spotlight on a single rider. The drug problem was systemic and changes have to happen at the top.
Lance deserves to eat as many slices of humble pie as reporters can give him. Hes lucky to still have all the money he has, and the sheep that still listen and watch his podcast.
Asteriskstrong: I told Betsy Andreu I was sorry, what more does she want? Yes, because saying he is sorry makes up for years and years of hostility and defaming their character.
I honestly think he’s simple. Just doesn’t listen to Armstrong who tells him time and time again he is bound by confidentiality and it is not up to him to change cycling for the better because he is persona non grata.
It's very fitting that the Irish have been in the vanguard of bringing him to the light. You sin, you repent (sincerely), and you're absolved. Lance is sorry he got caught. It's obvious, he exudes it. That's why the public hasn't embraced his redemption story, there's no recognition that he did anything wrong in the first place. You can tell by the way he talks: He apologized, if they won't accept his apology, there's noting he can do, he's the victim once again. It's a pretty good litmus test for sociopathy if you empathize with this guy. 'Everyone was doing it!' What kindergartner hasn't had that excuse rejected: 'Everyone was stealing, everyone was cheating, everyone was picking on the weak kid.' It's a scary commentary on our society that as many people seem to empathize with this unlikable character as do. He's a Greek tragedy, and in a Greek tragedy the hero fails to recognize his flaws, or only partially sees them when it's way too late.
The "motor" line of questioning was utterly obnoxious. He asked Tyler Hamilton that same question too: "What's the difference between epo and a motor?" WTF?? I mean doping sucks and unfairly advantages peeps and all that, but they're like not even in the the same ballpark. Am I wrong? It's like taking adderall for an exam versus just paying someone else take it for you. Wow.
Lance already had an advantage and proved it with 7 TdF wins. He didn't need further advantage by having a motor. It was already obvious enough that something was amiss. I was hoping Lance would have gone down that road with his response.
Its not really about what kind of cheating method in the end. Armstrong has the choice to fully come clean, look like the good/honest guy. Or he can look bitter and hesitant and come across like hes hiding something...which will prevent him ever being seen as the good guy. I think his biggest weakness is an apparent pride he has in the complexity of the doping system and his achievements while on it. Of course the majority of cyclists were doping but i think other cyclists do a better job in being grounded and realistic about it. Personally i think swallowing a pill or injecting yourself with something requires no talent or skill, just money perhaps.
Asteriskstrong asks how he can have anything to do to improve the sport and deal with anti-doping because he has a lifetime ban. Even Ben Johnson took a turn for an anti-doping campaign that actually had some good platforms including out of competition testing, a test once someone gets into the system so that any changes are obvious, and a truth and reconciliation process for sports like cycling that are completely are nearly completely tainted. If you are doing less than Ben Johnson, you aren't interested in cleaning up the sport.
I would love to know the exact program he used. Timing of the drugs, how often, dosages etc. I find this stuff incredibly interesting. It’s a shame he never disclosed anything super specific about the drugs
He has talked about that in other interviews. EPO, drug of choice. He said it has a half life of four hours and it could easily be scheduled into his racing regiment.
Did he ever apologize to David Walsh? I think he mocked him a while ago I wondered if he apologised to David Walsh. Tough interview probably deserves it most interviews I see with him are half therapy sessions softball interviews, he didnt come across great. The ending was disrespectful and doesn't seem to be really sorry still thinks he is a champ.
Asteriskstrong posed for a picture underneath seven yellow jerseys that are not rightfully his. A few months after his lifetime ban, he tried to enter a swim meet. It's obvious that to the extent that psychopath feels sorry, it is for being caught.
He's like that annoying ex girl/boyfriend that pretends to want to have a conversation but rather takes every chance to take subtle and not so subtle blows that are not constructive, shuts down an interviewee from disclosing or discussing anything. Did he really care what answers Lance gave or just wanted to "get him" with his comments. I can't believe Lance didn't hang up, what a waste of time.
I wish Lance would just say 'Athletes dope and the only way to stop it would be to watch them 24 hours a day so, if you want to compete, you have to do it'.
Exactly. Why apologize? Lance didn't create the culture of doping in cycling. It was there long before he arrived, and it is still there now. The blame for all of this should either be on cycling's governing bodies, who turned a blind eye to what was going on, or the fans themselves, for deluding themselves into thinking that their favorite rider was clean, or that banning drugs creates a level playing field. It doesn't. There will always be someone who tries to gain an edge by taking an illegal substance. But by banning drugs, you actually hurt the honest riders. There's simply no viable solution to the problem.
Not sure Ger does any research before his interviews. His recent interview of Tyler Hamilton is clumsy and awkward, he’s being given unbelievable content to work with and yet still manages to make a hash of it time in and time out
Very wrong. The guy is a very experienced and very highly regarded sports show presenter and sports analyst. He quietly poked and provoked Armstrong into showing his true colours and personality in this interview rather than the holier-than-thou redeemed figure he wants to portray since being caught. Ger is a clever interviewer.
A lot of people used to bash 60 Minutes reporter Mike Wallace back in the day, because he would always ask tough questions and give tough interviews. I admired him, because EVERY other interviewer just lobbed the softballs, and had no guts to put feet to the fire. This man didnt either, and I admire him as well.
@@XX-is7ps What i didn't like about it was you could hear the opinion of the interviewer through the whole interview, instead of just asking critical questions with an open mind. Also sometimes he didn't even take no for an answer. That made it painfull to listen to for me. Like the part where it was Lance's word against his (or his source) about whether or not his apologies were accepted by Greg Lemond and his wife. As if he wanted to have the last word and just repeated what he thought or was told. My suggestion would be to not give the impression you're biased, ask more open questions or be prepared for an answer that is opposed to what you think or heard.
It feels like people complaining about the interviewer have difficulty reading between the lines and seeing what the interviewer is actually doing. I see him playing lance at his own game and doing well
@@Kevin-iv7rh Zero spent for cancer research. It was all for "awareness," as though people aren't aware of cancer. His "charity" was high-dollar fundraisers with A-list celebrities and 90% overhead and huge swag bags for high-dollar fundraisers. Livestrong is a character laundering organization, not a charity. If you want a real hero for cancer research, look at Terry Fox.
Fantastic interview Ger...Jesus you had your backround research done before you took that interview on...I'd say he didn't fancy that Dublin event too much after talking to you😅
an excellent interview. Lance Armstrong could be the perfect ambassador for anti-doping if he apologised and tried to fight against it and telling the whole truth. t would be his perfect redemption. Once you got caught, why not going all out? It'd be totally beneficial for him. Either it's his fault or he has bad counsellors.
This was the most hard hitting, no nonsense interview that Armstrong had to answer questions on… But he often chose not to ,or chose to redirect or reflect away from answering! It was almost as if he was navigating his strategy when riding through the peloton at the Tour…. those Irish are a bunch of persistent interviewers.,eh? lol
Ger Gilroy loves the sound of his own voice which makes for awkward cringe interviews. This interview is a classic example of why you shouldn't let someone who cares more about his own ramblings than that of the person he is interviewing present these kind of things...
Let's face the facts... 1. Doping continues to be rampant in cycling because (as it's been said many times), you can't finish the tour (much less win) without something! (Without drugs... first week flying, second week dying, third week fu@ked!). Also, the average speed of the tour continues to climb, providing solid evidence that widespread doping continues to this day. 2. Lance was one of the many doping (just read Tyler Hamilton's book) at that particular time. 3. Armstrong's mistake was that he was SO nasty to those around him. Read Hamilton's and others accounts of "walking on eggshells" around Armstrong because of his single-minded narcissistic approach to winning and doping. 3. I think people don't dislike him so much for doping (because he was a champion amongst fellow dopers) but because of the dreadful way he treated his teammates and staff in defending his line of BS regarding the actual doping. Further, his books misled many (me included) to believe Armstrong was clean. Nevertheless, Ger's approach was unprofessional and biased in the interview. His loathing for Armstrong was palpable. I definitely would not defend Armstrong in any way, but that doesn't justify poor journalism and barely concealed hatred for Armstrong. I've heard quite a few of Ger's interviews with other riders regarding this issue and they are usually underpinned by bias and a hatred for Armstrong which just comes across as totally unprofessional.
Not sure I have ever heard a more biased interviewer. He was never once interested in Lance's answers, only trying to find another avenue to peg him. Ger is a hack at best.
You made a good point. I think its a trend with british/irish commentators to have a bias compared to North american ones. They will put the spotlight on just one team, athlete. Sometimes they completely ignore the other team/other side of the picture.
He will never tell the whole truth . Too many powerful people are more guilty than he is . They’d have put him in jail if he told the whole truth. . Watch icarus and realize sport will never be clean .
I would tend to agree. But the lying and the bullying, the harassment, the defamation (see Greg Lemond)... shows LA for who he is. He's been a bully. Don't care what kind of person he has now become.
I'm amazed Lance was able to remain calm and cool during this insulting interview. Geez. Labeling ths as a "heated" intervew is very misleading and blatant click bait.
surprised you made it that far into the interview. It's one thing to "dig" and ask followups, it's altogether another allowing your "agenda" to reveal your personal bias. I enjoyed the anticipation of LA's response to some of your intentional clumsily worded questions. I believe you could have achieved a better outcome through a more accomplished skillset as an interviewer. Your tried at times, though. Sláinte.
Lance is a master of spin and he is very good a batting away interviewers who are not prepared, this was the opposite and the real Lance was bubbling up, Lance is not sorry for what he did he’s sorry the life he had while cheating is gone, he’s not sorry he cheated
Not bullying at all. Look up the definition of bullying. He’s a reporter and a disingenuous one at that. Lance was polite and receptive in the beginning, but he doesn’t have to put up with it more than anyone else.
The guy pointed the present about mini motors in a bike. Lance tried to point out it was over 20 years ago. Don’t like Lance and what he did to so many people. Worse, people deserve financial restitution not delved in adequately here. Poor job by the reporter.
@@IronHorsey3 2 years ago😄I hope the reporter and Lance have moved on and are living a peaceful and productive life andI hope you are aswel Roman have a wonderful day my man👍🏻👍🏻
Give it time. It's the next big scandal in cycling. The fact that Armstrong cut the interview there and then is extremely telling. It clearly touched a nerve.
He's still a bully, as proved with his 'ok Superman' response. Still can't fully accept the damage he has done to the sport and the countless people/reputations he destroyed. He is only sorry he got caught, plain and simple.
Lance didn't destroy reputations, those people did it to themselves by either cheating themselves, snitching unnecessarily, or trying to bring Lance down just because he beat them at their own game. The people who ratted on Lance weren't Mother Teresa. They all took part in the system of cheating in one way or another and all happily accepted the money and fame from it.
Do you really believe he was the only one in the team endorsing cheating? Doping takes a whole program on the athletic to get the best results, these had been established on previous athletes. The whole team knew, obtained it, distributed it and prescribed it. I bet even the sponsors new. You know why, every one wanted results. Many people were guilty, only Lance, was the fall guy.
@@wvu05 Sure, why not? Lance beat all the other psychopaths at their own game. If you can worship psychopaths for telling the truth, then I can admire Lance for turning their fraudulent system against them.
I’m a big fan of ‘the move’ lance’s podcast with JB and Big George. Where is the respect for Lance. The same people who built him up and hyped him up, turn away from him as a human when he came clean. Lance was made into a scapegoat for this period in cycling. Lance wasn’t the only rider doping, or his team, the only one to do it. The sport was fuelled by EPO, and a fool like this interviewer, should climb down from his moral high-horse. It’s the British position always isn’t! “You’re a doper” I found this offensive to watch his guy disgrace himself in front of the legend cyclist Lance Armstrong. Can’t wait to watch The Move again. Love you Lance!!!!
No 1. Ger Gilroy is Irish, not British and works for Newstalk in Dublin, did you not hear that? No 2, He doesn't have to apologise for asking him difficult questions, in fact Lance remembers this interview to this day as one of his toughest. No 3, you have to earn respect, Gilroy doesn't need to fall at his feet like you, it's called journalism, you wouldn't know anything about it so.. No4, Lance has not attoned for his sins, he escaped paying out millions, he's only sorry he got caught...he's shown no contrition ..people like that are what we call sociopathic. 5. How can you watch this, it was a radio podcast you dummy!
This was not going to end pretty. Armstrong has difficulty with the idea of regret and apologising. He said he isnt the type to lay down or give up. So he views apologising as a defeat. He's also trying very hard to not give up names of anyone else who doped. It would be an easy way out for him to point the finger at all the other riders but he refrains from doing that. OTB are a little inconsistent in that Tyler Hamilton doped but they invited him onto their channel warmly... 2 people armstrong treated very badly are David Walsh and Emma O'Reilly who are both Irish. So the irish probably are going to have the worst opinion about him. They are assuming Armstrong went into cycling dirty and a cheater. The truth is, like many, Armstrong entered cycling clean and only changed when he was being beaten by dopers. They should also acknowledge the authorities were corrupt and that enabled all this to happen. But the way Armstrong would threaten people to the extreme and used corrupt ties with officials for gains was completely unacceptable.
So this was a bad interview. He kept haranguing Lance about not saying enough and that he should answer questions about this or that, but he has Lance ask him the questions you think he needs to answer. He does when its specific about Lamont or the Andrieus, if he lies he lies. But if you feel he needs to answer a question... ask him the question.
I am french and totally fascinated by all the noise arround this small story compared to the Real History of our Tour de France, you guys have the greatest rider with Lemond, stop speaking about Lance WHO???, Never exist in our hsitory
Should’ve done the interview using Skype, wanted to see his facial expressions when answering. Btw, He even conned the two presidents, appeared on stage with President Clinton and Bush Snr !
Dougie doug , motors in bikes in 1990’s, that’s what stupid. Every one was doping , 2nd 3rd 4th 5th place, so he beat a bunch of cheaters on the same playing field, he made mistakes, he’s human and if you had millions to protect, I’m pretty sure you, you’ll do what ever it takes to protect it, it’s crazy how people are so high morals and judgmental, yet I don’t see them helping anyone but themselves
I fell in love with cycling because of “the Pope”. I was 10 on a hot summer day when my parents couldn’t take me or my siblings to the beach. I was sooo bored and trying to find something to do and spend my energy. I then picked up the remote, zapped a bit and fell on this bike race - mountain stage - and saw the magic of chess on a bike. It started with me but soon enough my 7 member family of 5 siblings were siding with either Schleck or contador in 2011. But it all started with the pope all those years back. Thank you for your service Lance. You did what you had to do.
The funny thing about this whole Lance Armstrong “cheating issue” is that every cyclist I know considers him the greatest cyclist of all time. Only non cyclist people despise him.
