A poncho (our PSS) can be used for much more than rain protection. It also keeps out the wind and as you will see in this video a small heat source can easily warm you. This is a great emergency set up to have. LINKS BELOW

Great video. I've seen this trick used a bit up in the Tetons since I was a kid. Nice on an archery hunt. I use my wool Spartacus Poncho under my rain poncho, and turn the wool poncho at a right angle, so the lengths are lateral instead of in front and in back, which keeps theheat from escaping as easily. - add a little candle and it gets ya warm right quick that way. - Mike

I am glad I saw this 🤠 a tomato paste tin fits the candles well. I made a lantern that warmed me.

+William Maurer Thank you. I camp pretty much every week all year round which helps, there is nothing like experience to teach a person. I'm always experimenting with something, which I find enjoyable.

Cutting bottom and top from been can, would serve a well as heater, it's high enough not cause burning, and you can easily press it flat, and maybe some small air flow holes is needed bottom, and you can easily boil cup of coffee with same setup, just metal mug top/in beer can cylinder and candle below

I always carry tea lights, dig a small hole for them, a full size UCO lantern will keep you warm enough in a car in 40 degree weather, the tealight lantern will keep frost off of a tent or dew and that s you. helps keep you warm

They are very handy for a little heat, not so much for lighting. Good comment

Heated pebbles from a fire would do the same thing. A small amount of heat, even a canteen of hot water would warm a small space for a time. Open flame is not needed. Confinement of heat is needed.

Proper layered clothing and fire are your best shelter. Clear plastic sheeting is far more useful as a carry in than any other. Clear plastic can be shaded from the sun, make a super shelter, protect from rain and snow and wind. It can be used to collect water from the ground, any green plant, the rain and even the morning dew.

!8th century used wool and a small fire. Would dig a small hole verses split wood. Good vid. Tea lite candles melt, which can spill. Bees wax seems to be the ticket thanks.

A Zippo hand warmer or two would work.

You're near two close trees. if it were me, I'd run a guy line between them ,and would make a lean-to, then build a small fire in front of it for warmth, etc. Short story, my son and I were deer hunting one year, and the call was for rain, so I brought a couple of ponchos for each of us. The original plan was to wear them if it rained, however since they were camo, we opted to make a lean to, just to sit under while we hunted if it rained. And it rained most of the day. We stayed dry and comfortable. Much more so than had we worn them.
@wildernessinnovation
@wildernessinnovation 8 лет назад
+Nickathome Smith Yup that is another option, and our ponchos have 12 tie out tabs on them so they can easily be set up as a tarp in a lean to configuration. I just like doing different things sometimes, some wind up being stupid and others kinda cool. Thanks man.

+Nickathome Smith You should always have more than one option, and options can be dictated by circumstance. In your case I doubt you and your son had the candle lantern, but, I have certainly been in situations myself where I have just had to stop due to lack of light, exhaustion etc and it would not be feasible (or even possible) to make any conventional type of shelter. This trick would have done me great service on a few occasions, for sure, I've had times when all I could do was sit there in a poncho, rest up, until my mind was clear enough, and my body rested enough to continue safely, chomping down calories, till I could move at first light. Not a great nights rest, and too darn cold! I always carry a tea-light candle or two for emergencies, in a sheltered place you can get a hot cup of water with one, and it had occurred to me to use a candle under the poncho, but, thought better of it because a) I was also under it, and b) I had the fear of it catching light to something. I agree, always try to make the best shelter you can, most times, but, I think this trick, especially if you only need a few more hours to get to a place-of-comfort, is yet another tool in the arsenal...and this whole area is about learning from others. I think a good survivalist/outdoorsman, should be like a sponge, listening and watching others experience, you never ever know when a chance conversation or observation comes in useful in the future.

+Wilderness Innovation I think we should all be experimenting, and striving to learn -I think to just stick to what you know, and never experiment, is lazy, and is not how the whole process came about. The majority of us are using skills other learned from experience, trial and error. If no one ever experimented, probably mankind would never have left Africa and survived!! I always think it is best to learn for ourselves, for sure listen to others, but we shouldn't be blindly following what they do, time moves on, and I think once we learn something ourselves, we have the 'first principles' of survival, applying knowledge and creativity to what could be a life or death situation. It's similar to what is wrong with most Western education systems now, they are coached how to pass exams, seldom needing to learn for themselves. Some of the intelligentsia I have come across are the dimmest bulbs in the box, they have little common sense, and no practical skills and knowledge to bring to the party...and, sadly, because they 'know everything' they can't be taught lol

+Ethical Warrior In the northern part of the USA we have no old growth forrest, trees are clear cut, and replanted creating animal habitats and food supply. the game are managed to keep the population matching the available food, selling hunting fees pays the bill for all the management of natural resources. Overpopulation of deer just causes death by starvation. In St Paul,MN there are flocks of wild turkeys, deer roam and feed in larger yards I have hawks nesting, owls nesting. deer, turkeys, rabbits and squirrels. Animals are doing quite well living in urban America.

Some people use a warmer fueled with lighter fluid. I originally got the idea from some military guys who used candles, just bare candles, not in a lantern !! Spooky...I like these candles because we make them out of beeswax which has a pleasant smell...Thanks for the comment

You can use what you want, the idea is to use a lantern for the candle so the flame is contained. I like beeswax candles because they smell better than paraffin type candles. Thanks for asking.,

we used to have charcol rod pocket warmers when walking as a kid, not to sure of the output of heat compared to the candle but the only time i have melted wax by my balls is when i'm going for hair removal ^^

Would it work ,with a lantern made out of a tin can ?
@grayghost1031
@grayghost1031 10 лет назад
Ken, I'm wondering if you could dig a swallow hole in the ground under you and put the light inside the hole. You then could lay on the hole but I would still be afraid of the plastic melting if it touched the candle.
@TianaMaher
@TianaMaher 10 лет назад
***** Thank you. In juniour forest wardens, we learned to make candle lanterns ,out of tin cans, that were safe to warm up our tents at night. That was what I ment. But it would be so nice to have one of the lanterns you are talking about. They sound pretty nifty.
@erinowl4407
@erinowl4407 9 лет назад
to Kenneth Kramm - I'm sure you've read some of the replies about digging a small indentation, Iwhich could be "covered" with a rock for safety) but also, you can hang this lantern overhead - in a tarp, hammock, tent situation and also, wax is "non-flammable" - so when it spills, it doesn't catch fire. Candles vs lantern fuel or alcohol, do not "catch fire" if spilled. Wool adds fireproof to the equation if that is your set up. A tiny bit of instant heat like this can save your life if you can find a way to make it work in your set up. Hope this comment was useful to you.

KennethKramm No way should you sleep with lit candle in poncho. That uco candle holder gets hot as hell after burning awhile. Soldiers used sterno cans with poncho in foxholes many years ago.

it would feel safer if this was inside a non-flammable cover. like a wool blanket.

I was thinking what if you built a small tripod and hung the lantern from it between your legs that would protect you from accidentally bumping it and it might also help protect your poncho from touching it And help hold your poncho up around it in case you fall asleep that way you don’t have to worry about melting your poncho

Is there any concern with beeswax candle attracting bears?
@tomhickman1006

Most bears hibernate in full winter, if you encounter one in winter something is very wrong with that bear. Consider the bear very dangerous, snd very hungry..
