We finally get started on a project we've been planning since the winter months, a seed growing room! No more starting plants in the house this spring if we can get this complete before the snow flies. We prep the area for the new heated foundation and once the concrete is poured we enjoy a tasty dinner with the baby ginger we harvested.
We appreciate you tagging along for our Alaskan adventure 😀
Thank you for watching and supporting our channel! 💙

I have watched a number of channels of off-grid homesteaders, but holy cow, the scale of projects you two tackle is just a world apart! So much fun to watch things evolve! I love the cooking parts, always neat to see how you use the food you've harvested in delicious looking dishes.

I love that every time you build something, you celebrate by having your dinner right there at the building site. It's such a sweet thing. And I bet the seed room is going to be fantastic! Given the size of your planned greenhouse, I can't imagine you would be able to fit all the seedlings in your cabin anyway. Poor Eric would have been forced to sleep with the chickens otherwise!

As I watch you doing the myriad of things necessary to homestead in Alaska, I'm reminded of my Dad. He was a child of the Depression, raised in a red dirt farm in Georgia and grew up learning how to do everything. There was nothing he couldn't do with his hands and I see that in you two. He's been on to Glory for almost 40 years but he would have loved your channel. He was a bit disappointed in me that I chose a different life, but was a terrific father. God bless both of you
@jbuehler00

My dad was similar, but in Iowa. And even when he had his own family and a successful small business owning his private dental practice, he lived frugally and had a HUGE garden and had a canning kitchen in the basement and a cellar, but unfortunately my mom was not good about using the foods, so there were still items from the 90s in the 2000's. As an adult who enjoys gardening now, I wish I did that activity with my dad more often (aside from the required bean and raspberry harvesting we sometimes did as children).
@jbuehler00
@jbuehler00 12 дней назад
His parents grew everything by hand, too, and lived so frugally. My grandma (his mom) had never been to a restaurant until she was in her 80s after getting remarried to a gentleman who was more metropolitan and knew the finer things in life; I'm so glad she was able to experience a more luxurious and carefree life before she passed suddenly. She was always scary growing up and she lightened up so much during her last years of life.

The trowel you used on the edge that has a curved side, you are to push it down on the side a slide it back and forth to create a smooth curved edge. When you put a chalk line down on concrete you spray it with clear enamel paint so it don’t wash off.

It’s a lot of work for two people to pour a slab that size, but if you tap the forms with a hammer before the concrete cures you can avoid the “honeycomb” on the outside edges. You can seal it with mortar if are worried. Ice can get in and crack the edge 😬 I always enjoy your videos 👍👍👍

Hello Arielle & Eric. Regarding your ginger. Well done. Here in Queensland Aust. I grow ginger. I get so much that I have worked out a way to preserve it. Scrub and scape off any brown skin, slice up with a mandolin into thin slabs, place in a sterilised glass jar and cover with a heavy pickling brine ( salt only - no spices) I keep it in the fridge. Every time you need ginger, take a pieces out and process as desired for cooking. Lasts for ever. We love your videos and look forward to every progress.

When I was building Habitat houses the foundation slab was just like yours, except I used foam boards around the edge. This separates the ground temperature from the slab temperature. You can still put foam around the slab edge when the forms are removed.

You need to look out for the slab cracking at the pin locations in the future since you pinned the slab to the foundation. Unless you have permafrost up to the surface, once the winter comes and the ground freezes, you seed room slab is going to heave and lift while your foundation will not and your slab will crack. You may want to consider using your big rigid chop saw with a diamond blade to cut the pins through the concrete. As a rule of thumb, you should only attach foundations when they are the same depth so they shift together. If they are different depths, it's best to let them shift separately.
@brucea550
@brucea550 10 дней назад
They may be okay because both slabs are heated but yeah, I’d have made that a seismic joint with no pins. I’m also curious why he ran the insulation upside down. I’ve never even seen r-tech used under a slab so maybe he knows something else?

I have 20x16 shed on an 1808 built home that is needs of replacing, we are hoping g to have this project also ground work ,wire wrap the floor facing ground with wire mesh to keep rodent and squirrel out! This will allow for 2nd deep freezer, a smaller restaurant display cooler, to use for fridge, and with area with 60 x60 x2 bay windows with lower sliders for air flow, that area will be for seed start or pla to to keep warm thro winter, the roof will be a frame with one side a foot or so lower, don't recall the name.of style, to put windows up there with sliders also for extra air flow, and much like sky lite, patio doors at ends with cobula porch cover, other end but to the house. Barn sliding doors to roll across when we go away, extra protection. Window shutters, maybe. . . Anyways very eager to have a place to plant other in the house also!! I did concrete work in my younger years and on the final finish we used hand trowels while being on the concrete with knee boards. That was the only step you didn't do at the end. Later on concrete guys in this area started final finishing the concrete with hand mags on outdoor slabs. That way you don't have the broom lines. Another poster was right about tapping the forms when the concrete is wet to help stop the brittle edges. Also you need to push down on the edger harder and go longer lengths.

You both continue to amaze us with what you are able to do. The research, time, and effort you put into all the projects shows in the successful outcomes. With you in spirit since you traveled to Alaska and look forward to each week.

A trick to using the chalk line is after you make your lines spray them with a can of clear spray paint. The water won’t wash away when you cut or it rains. This also works on wood if you are doing a layout and don’t want your lines to go away on your subfloor when you sweep and clean up at the end of the day

Very nifty. While not everyone could live off the grid like you two, you do set an excellent example of what great work ethics can accomplish.

Work shops and garages only come in one size, too small. Heating the slab is the way to go. Ive been heating my garage with a hot air furnace. Its cool on that floor. Great job as usual. Mike from Maine
