Heather Cox Richardson explores how the economic and political crises of the 1850s, 1890s, and 1920s each created a backlash that inspired Americans to reclaim government of the people, by the people, and for the people.
Recorded at the Vermont Humanities Council's Fall Conference 2018, "The Ebb and Flow of Optimism through American History."

Nice info, ...one typo, James Buchanan was not president in 1861, he won in 1856.

Very enjoyable and insightful. Honestly took me two hours of listening, writing, thinking, researching additional facts (dates), and understanding to get through the first 6:00. And while I agree with your premise that Equality of Opportunity (from the Declaration of Independence) and Protection of Property (from the US Constitution) CAN be contradictory, I would propose that they CAN be mutually inclusive of each other. Basically that Protection of Property doesn't prevent Equality of Outcome, but instead can be most beneficial when supporting each other. I would also argue that "forced" Equality of Outcome not only removes Protection of Property, but also ultimately fails to yield Equality of Outcome. Thanks again. Looking forward to learning more.

So at 17:00 in the video, Preston Brooks (Southern Pro-Slavery Democrat Representative) walks up while Senate is in session? or sneaks up after session? depending on which version you believe, and beats with a cane Senator Charles Sumner (Northern Anti-slavery Republican Senator) because his opinion is unpopular. Whose behavior is worse here?

We can agree: Socialism without capitalism is communism, and capitalism without socialism is fascism. From the inherent tensions between the Delcaration of Independence and the Constitution to the perpetual swing of the pendulum, I can't help but wonder: How do we get out of this endless loop?

@Jeremiah Boyd what she said makes a lot of sense. I wouldn’t argue the fine points of each system- socialism, communism, capitalism, fascism. It is doubtful we will ever realize any of these economic/social formats in their purist form because people have a say in their own governance and the strong divided points of view causes things to swing from one side to the other. Right now capitalism has a much stronger say. And we’re seeing the immediate results of what happens when there are no social safety nets during this pandemic. I think FDR and Wilson had a good mix of maintaining healthy competition, equal opportunity and programs to boost the less fortunate. They hit the sweet spot.

I agree strongly with your basic premise. Just quibble with you on the meaning of the term socialism. Socialism means government ownership of the means to production. A better term maybe to use in this context would be redistribution. Plug that term into the second half of your formulation above instead of term socialism. But again I agree with you 100% in your overall understanding.

Imho, I believe if we simply honored and respected Separation of Church and State, most everything could fall into place. If we respected that we each have equal freedom; that where my neighbor's freedom ends, mine starts...where mine ends, yours starts, and so on...things could fall into place. If everyone understood that our rights are not free, that they come with our personal responsibility, things could fall into place. Most people are kind and good. It's those few that choose to actively work against 'live and let live' and won't mind their own business that are the wrenches that prevent the gears of community and society from turning smoothly.

I didn't see one single shred of evidence where a homosexual person had their constitutional rights taken away from them. Life, Liberty and the pursuit of happiness is all you get.

Abe Lincoln was our very first Republican president in 1860. Then Democratic party split over the slavery issue. After, there were Northern Dems, and the Southern Dems became Dixiecrats.
