I absolutely love listening to HCR. I've just finished her 9 part series on Reconstruction and beyond. Her weekly addresses and letters are truly informative. I appreciate all her hard work. Thank you so much, you've been a beacon in these dark times.

If only history would have been taught in this way when I was going to school. You two are delightful thanks for making the dusty past come to life so we can see how it is being repeated today. As a Canadian I must admit that my knowledge of Canadian history could be better. It always seemed like one l-ong task of memorization with the pertinent points decided by the instructor and the closer one was to his/her teachings the better the mark. I've amazed myself at how I am gobbling up these videos and FB writings ever since finding Heather. Your passion, and ability to make the subject come alive is addictive. Thanks for your contribution to waking people up during these dangerous times.

I feel so fortunate to have been made aware of HCR

Language is everything - that’s why social justice campaigns - civil rights movements -are literacy movements. As a person drawn to radical feminism because of its accountability - its critical thinking - I always daydream about engaging with a brilliant critical mind about gender ideology. someone who will *listen and understand* as an observer of what informs me and how I interpret it and then test and challenge along its strengths and fault lines. I don’t want to convince, I want to refine my observations.... because I am deeply and profoundly in love with understanding the female condition and its reflection of the evolution of our species.

I have one nagging question about US history: Was the revolution against Britain really mostly for the wealthy? I have entertained the idea that King George could have ended the rebellion by simply making the wealthiest colonists lords, then inviting them to come to London and join The House of Lord's, or send a proxy to sit there in their place. Could this have worked? I get this notion from having read through the The Federalist Papers and having read The US Constitution. The US Constitution seems to be structured in such a way as tho make it very difficult for one "faction" to hog all the governing power. That, I see as its genious. But it seems to me that its primary intent was to keep one group of elites from overlording another. Seems that these gentlemen didn't trust each other much.

I’m anxious to read Field of Blood. When I was in 7th grade I was givemn John F Kennedy’s book, Profiles in Courage and I was quite taken by the profile of Thomas Hart Benton. I remember the political cartoon and him proclaiming, “Stand out of the way and let the assassin fire! I have no weapon...”Even as a kid, I recognized the power of his words and the power of the words of Sam Houston when on the campaign trail he would rip off his shirt and bellow about shedding his blood to get TX into the union. Yeh, this is a great discussion you’re having and I can relate. Thank you!

Love both these scholars, though as long as the USA continues to insist corporations are people and money is speech, I fear we will continue to 'enjoy' the 'best government money can buy.'

Words are powerful but their power comes from the desire of the listener.

The playwright Pinter's plays portray how dominance and authority establish themselves via spoken language but also demeanor, carriage, physiognomy and so forth. My father was a bully, it was psychological and he could work it in many situations, but at home corporal punishment was used. I got it with the razor strap before my little brother and so he heard the strap which made an awful sound, together with our father's wrathful voice. When it was his turn he had the dry heaves, scared out of his wits.

we all need to be students of propaganda, what it is and how it works. the shaping of public opinion is old as time. the creel commission, edward bernays, walter lippmann and ayn rand did their job well.

I honestly think that Shelby foot said it best something like 25 years ago. That any understanding of the American character in the 21st century has to have a deep understanding Of the American Civil War. And just like Heather just said. " We are still having this conversation today " And its because it was left unresolved. I think if Lincoln had survived our country would been in a much better place. Because president Lincoln didn't want any trials and penalties and punishments he wanted to unify all his people. And I believe he would have done it. But when Lincoln died it radicalized the Republican party and the teaching the confederates a lesson and made reconstruction another war of attrition. And it would be the Freed people who paid the price for the war and failure if reconstruction. And I truly believe it failed because Lincoln was not there to lead the country through it.
