Heathkit SB 300 and SB 400 operation

This is a video for those who have never seen how to tune and use a typical older tube type amateur (ham) radio. Hopefully this will make one of these old rigs a bit easier to understand, and encourage you to find one at a hamfest and give it a good home. The Heathkit in this video is vintage of the early 1960's. This design is a Heathkit version of the popular Collins design. They are also called the twins. WB3BKN

Thank you for this video. I discovered amateur radio via an old BC-348 radio my late great-uncle gave me, back in the 1970s. Fell in love with the Heathkit gear, and the old Robot SSTV monitor/camera. Fast-forward to today. Received my General ticket about three years ago, and collected almost the entire Heathkit SB series. Only thing missing is the SB-220 linear, which I'll get in time. I'm currently finishing up the restoration of my SB-303 receiver, after which I'll restore the SB-401 transmitter. I also have the monitor scopes for both the receiver and transmitter, along with the station monitor. I can't wait to get on the air with them! I agree with you that the old vintage gear is in a unique class by itself, and there's just something to having to "dip the plate and peak the grid" that just brings these old radios alive. Nothing else like it, and while I don't having anything against the latest transistorized gear, my heart is rests with Heathkit!

I made my HW-100 abt 1970 and that was a good transceiver even if the price was low. Now I have Heath SB-104A trcv and Drake Line. I like workiing vintage station and CW. 73 de OH2BIO since 1967.

I have a SB 300/SB401 pair Such a beautiful set. For me, it's the experience. No filtering, el-natural and all tubes is the icing on the cake. Being tubes there is a level of idiot mistakes absorbed on the TX side so long as one is observant.

Started with an SB200 for my Icom now I started to get the whole SB line. Love it! At this moment in the shack : SB313, SB400, SB 620, SB 200, SB 220. Looking for the SB 630 and SB650.. very nice machines to work on. But you have to know something about electronics!

Terry, Thanks for the video, quite informative. I'm going for my Technician and General tests on Sept 6, 2018 (yes - on the same day). I was looking at SB-401's on ebay today. Looks like they would be allot of fun. Don

Thanks Don. My best to you on the test. I did this video for an Elmer class that I do for our club. I plan to do another video for a Kenwood Ts 830s after I get the shack looking better since the addition caused a bit of congestion on the shelves.

@@dri50 excellent. It is a good idea to go for the extra while you are in the mind frame to do it. I allowed a busy life get in the way. I finally did it one day and wondered why I waited.

Why isn't the S meter operational?

The S meter works, but is not as accurate as today's are. Those days signal reports were not reliant on S meter readings, but more by sound and experience. The S meter in mine is not calibrated to today's standards.
