A comedy quickstep by the popular radio dance orchestra directed by Henry Hall starts our selection of six recordings from the Golden Age of British Dance Bands. This is a lively number with a very well arranged and executed vocal as well as some neat solo work. Henry was in his first year at the helm of the BBC Dance Orchestra, and already a big favourite with listeners. Next we have the opportunity of listening to one of the resident bands at London’s Savoy Hotel. Geraldo had built his fame with his Gaucho Tango Orchestra, but in 1934 decided to form a more mainstream dance band, but with the emphasis on sweet melody. It proved popular, although he still continued with his Gaucho Tango band which was so well established. Roy Fox’s superb band follows with a slow foxtrot which is a showcase for the voice of Denny Dennis. Roy had left the security of a London residency over a year earlier and was an established stage attraction, touring the variety theatres across the country. Another touring band was that of Mrs Jack Hylton, who had the backing of her famous husband’s organisation behind her. It was no wonder therefore that her band was very good, and had a recording contract for the budget Crown label, sold in Woolworths. Billy Bissett led a highly musical outfit at the May Fair Hotel in London which is reminiscent, in this arrangement, of some of the American sweet bands of the mid 1930s. Billy’s wife-to-be, Alice Mann, is heard here on her only solo vocal with Billy’s “British” band; the musicians, like its leader, were Canadians. The selection comes to a conclusion with the last recording Bram Martin’s Holborn Restaurant Dance Orchestra made, and their final record for Regal Zonophone. It is an excellent version of a popular tune of the time which was written for the Jessie Matthews film “Gangway”.
Recorded between 1933 and 1938 for the Columbia, Decca, Crown, HMV and Regal Zonophone labels, these recordings are long out-of-copyright. These sides have been remastered from original 78rpm discs by this user and are unique transfers. These cannot be copied or sold without the permission of Peter Wallace.

Listening to it for the fourth time, 'Lull' has such a wonderful melody. Before I go to bed again, a fifth or sixth time (at least) will be played. I've always loved the song, but this version is so beautiful. American recording companies around this time had a very brash and aggressive sound, while their British counterparts produced what 20 years later would be called HiFi. The detail is incredible and the recording balance is on par with, if not better than, most records made today. Fascinating!

Panachord Peter, is it somewhere on YT or Soundcloud? I love Carroll and have loads of his solos and Boyfriends records digitized on MiniDisc. I just have trouble getting a digital connection between my MD recorder and the optical (digital) input of my sound card, otherwise I would already have posted dozens and dozens of his sides. I had all my transfers from 78 to professional cassette tape (all played only once) and MD, when Windows decided to format both my internal and external (music archive) hard disk. 6 full weeks of hard work down the drain. I think I lost at least 300 hours of digitizing and around 1,000 hours of restoration work. I now only connect my external disk when I need it. There is about 5,000 hours of music on it.

A rather funny story about 'There's a lull in my life'. When Chris Ellis had a gig in Amsterdam in the 70s, one of the numbers he sang was that title. He and his fellow musicians didn't understand why the public was hilarious. Well. it was quite simple: in Dutch Lull means C*ck. Likewise Chris and his friends were hilarious when they saw billboards advertising 'Vocking Worst"... The latter is Holland's best sold brand of liver wurst. He told me this story himself when I drove him home after a day of delving through 20,000 or more 78s at a fair in Holland, and we passed by one of those billboards.

An apt title you chose for this set! My favorite has to be Fox's "Cotton."

Does anyone know if the magazine page shown at 7:08 is from the Radio Review the cover of which is shown at 9:12? Or where I might be able to find this magazine(s)- maybe in an archive somewhere?
