Glad you're here, great comment... And he's gosh darn silly at times. Example : the bubble wrap dance... Gotta be one of the silliest things ever. And the drifter, and Sven, and the hippy Scotsman..and Cleatus... . But with real edutainment, that's the golden ticket.

Nearly all my axe knowledge has came from Buckin' and Steven from skillcult, theres other great axemen channels out there too, but those two i've been following the longest and gained the most information from over the years.

When my mom went to her eternal reward when she died one of the first things i did was cancel the cable TV. She loved watching the old movies and many joyous times together watching and talking old movie stars. She grew up in Germany and learned how to speak partial English from old movies that she was able to see as a child. That cable TV is for the birds but of course some great shows like Axemen/ Forged in Fire, American Pickers... Don't miss them since i found Buckin Billy. And of course i am more busy than ever at 66. Gotta tune up my axe and practice with a broken finger.

Mr. Buckin' , I meant to mention this back the last time I left a comment & we were discussing convex & polished edges & there superiority to other edge profiles / geometries that can be utilized in different cutting situations , axe & other wise !!! Ok , here it is !!! the removal of a so called speed bump & other unwanted blade thicknesses is referred to as blade thinning & the need to do a blade thinning procedure is usually the result of prolonged use of a old timey sharpening stone & the lazy sharpener begins to stand the blade edge up to hurry the process of re keening the edge to get back into the work !!! when this lazy procedure is done over & over again the creation of a speed bump aka to thick a blade near the cutting edge is inevitable !!! Thus the need to remove the unwanted meat , thereby elongating a smother run up to the cutting edge & the blades side walls !!!
@jirusjirus9322

Ah, Buckin' thanks for taking the laughs for us, we appreciate it! But you do know that laughter is fuel for the soul, right?! Think of the hard times in life, and the laughter you did have that helped you through it. Imagine the poor sods that have little or no laughter and how sad their lives are. LAUGHTER... I'd surely be dead without it. Literally. Been fighting cancer for 15 years, next month. Never would have made it without God and laughter. Laugh with me. Laugh for me. Shoot - laugh AT me - just laugh, my friend! And giggles don't count - they're just baby laughs that haven't grown up yet! Gotcha brother!!!

BBR, here's an idea. Pry on a stuck axe and break the handle on purpose to show knuckleheads how to not pry on an axe handle. Also, I was always taught to not swing while someone was standing forward of your swing. Accidents happen, axe heads fly off of handles. Also, spread your legs while splitting
@jirusjirus9322
@jirusjirus9322 2 года назад
Also inexperienced weak hands can let the whole axe handle and all go flying. Safety precautions cannot be too detailed. Accidents happen in the most peculiar way.

Yep, thats exactly it... once youve experienced the joys and pleasure of a thin handle you'll never go back to swinging the club like handles found at most box stores these days... a little effort and know-how with a spoke shave can solve the issues of a overly thick club handle, but anytime you can purchase a handle that needs less fine tuning work its a huge bonus. For the Canadian folks out there looking to source high quality handles locally, Home hardware is carrying some incredible handles in-store/online these days, that I highly recommend folks check out! They're unvarnished, they're perfectly thinned, top notch grain orientation, and even the curved handles are vary straight with a perfect balance between a curved and straight handle in my opinion, rather then being overly curvy like so many box store handles these days.

I have always used a tapered kerf bc that's what my great gramps showed me when I was young. Man I wish I would of cared more and asked more questions bc I can't any longer. But I would love to here from your experience. Tapered kerf is working well for me.

Stringy wood. I'm in NZ and mainly cut bluegum (eucalyptus nitens) for firewood. I've been on my property almost 20 years and still have 6 bluegum that were 15 years old when I bought the place. I've had trees that were easy to split a week after felling and also super stringy ones. I've left trees on the ground for 2 years and they pretty much still have the same characteristics, although just a bit lighter. After pondering why some are and some aren't stringy I've come to the conclusion that I've got a theory. If I cut one down before the sap starts rising in mid spring it is not stringy and is also easy to split 2 years down the track. If I'm late one particular year and don't drop them until mid summer they're stringy. Green or cured, left as logs or ringed earlier, they're stringy. Your thoughts?
