HEAVY COAL TRAINS, on Tennessee Pass, with mid, and rear helpers

We start out at Minturn Colorado were a loaded coal train pulls into the yard. They make short work of cutting the train and adding mid-train helpers. We leave before they added rear helpers to find a place for photos. We watch several other coal trains fight the steep grades up to the top of the mountain, which is in the Tennessee Pass tunnel. There is only one more year left, and the line was shut down. It is still intact, but has been out of service many years now.
Be sure to check out my other videos going way back to the 1970's. There is plenty there that everyone can enjoy.

16:12 the DPU was manned? Wow. Also, quite interesting that nearly all the mid/read DPU's were GE's when the EMD's were leading.

Just heard about trains possibly returning over Tennessee pass, Hallelujah! Now, If only they could bring back Raton pass for frieght
@davidwhiting1761

Where'd you ever hear that from? UP hasn't sold off the line or ripped up the tracks, but given that there's been rock slides and the track in general is overgrown and needs rehabilitation I highly doubt they'd revive it. There's not much point in it, either. No local traffic and freight isn't flowing down that direction. With as much trouble and extra money as it would take to get loaded trains over the 3% ruling grade they could easily forward it through the Moffat Tunnel into Denver then send it South to Pueblo - if cross country traffic even needed to go that way. Raton's the same story - no local business on the line and it wouldn't be worth rerouting existing traffic over the pass. It's only open because Amtrak uses the line. I'd be skeptical of anyone saying trains would return to these particular mountain passes. If Tennessee Pass did reopen it'd likely only be Northbound coal empties to take advantage of the easier 1.4% grade heading North. No loaded Southbound trains would likely travel on it, and you'd likely not see manifest, autos, or intermodal travel over the pass.

@@davidwhiting1761 man, this was 3 years ago, so I don’t exactly remember where I heard it. I think there was rumblings about some short line who wanted to buy it. Either way it should definitely happen on both routes just because I said so and because it would be cool.

Tennessee Pass There is HOPE!!! Nov. 2019; Colorado Pacific Railroad is offering Union Pacific $10 million for 170 miles of its Tennessee Pass Line, running from Parkdale near the Royal Gorge through the lower Vail Valley to Dotsero. As of Dec 2019 the only west side recent Tennessee Pass rail line traffic is a train that runs to the American Gypsum wallboard manufacturing plant in Gypsum. The east side track above Parkdale over the pass to Dotsero is still owned by the UP. The track operated by Rock and Rail between Parkdale and Cañon City is still owned by the UP, while the track between Pueblo and Cañon City was purchased from the UP. The tourist line Cañon City and Royal Gorge Railroad operates on Rock and Rail (RRRR) short line section between Parkdale and Cañon City the RRRR's track is a subsidiary of Martin Marietta Materials.

Great stuff as usual, just a question, once the Mid train helpers are attached to the front of the rear half do they move forward onto the rear of the front half?
@1jackdk
@1jackdk 5 лет назад
Once the mid-trains units are coupled to the rear half, they pull up to the first section, couple up, and then the train pulls east. Then they stop, and the rear helper units come out of the yard and couple up to the rear. They do their air test, and off they go. On the other side the Tennessee Pass tunnel, at Malta, they stop in the small yard that has a crossover half way through the yard. They uncouple the mid-train units from the front and rear sections. Then the rear end helper pulls the rear half of the train back, the Mid-units run through the crossover to the other track. The rear helpers shove the train back together, and then drops off. The train does its air test, and heads east. The four midtrains run to the west end of the yard, couple to the two rear units, and they all head back down the mount grade to the yard at Minturn. Hope I explained that well. Thanks for watching...
