Lets have a look at the Bison 12 1/2" heavy duty "big hole" 3 jaw chuck on this 1941vintage Axelson metal lathe and loading a few pieces into it after the in place jaw grinding.
After using this industrial machine tool grade chuck I rate it as a great buy on the used market saving $3000 if you can grind the jaws. I will point out the first set up I had seen used on a job was in a sawmill. The grinder was simply constructed using a motor, steel plate and pillow block bearings for the basics of the grinder and the 4 ring fixture was just pipe, and it worked!
The grinding fixture for jaw loading was briefly shown on a WW2 America goes to war news reel over 80yrs ago!
